Amazing Byzantine-style Mosiacs

Wonderful religious mosaics, reminiscent of Costantinople. Well worth the 5 Euro price of admission.

I visited solely to see the mosaic of the Last Judgment and i did not go up the Tower. The mosaic is well worth the time to see it and if you are lucky enough to do so alone without a crowd (or herd) of other tourists you will be most fortunate indeed. Spend just 10 or 15 mins sitting... More

This was our reason to head to Torcello. One of the oldest churches consecrated in 1008. Beautiful mosaic work of the Last Judgment and much more. It's worth the trip across the lagoon and gives you a nice break from Venice.

I've been here a lot of times and each time I think I see more. Look carefully at the mosaic at the west end as well as the one that everyone knows at the east. If you're fit enough, climb the campanile for the fantastic view (no lift, so it's a long way up ...)

They have done a great deal of work in recent years to restore this beautiful, modest and impressive cathedral. Its intricate cobbled and tiled floors and its superb mosaics are tranquil and ancient - the golden mosaics probably pre-date the arrival of William the Conqueror in Britain. It is not always easy to get to but you will leave with... More

Fully recommend to go there! You should have time enough to explore not only this extraordinary place with memorable mosaics, but also neighbouring museum and chapel.

I guess I was lucky. It was off season, and the ferry was right there, about to leave to Torcello, which is just at the other side of the waterway, within sight. So close. In no time at all, we were there at the dock, and I was making my way on the long, paved path to Piazza Torcello. Once... More

If you only do one thing in Venice, go to Torcello and spend an hour gazing at the magnificent moasiac of the Last Judgement on the west wall of the basilica di Santa Maria Assunta. There are two other marvellous mosaics as well. he main picture shows the adjoining church of Santa Fosca, which is worth a visit, but only... More

Last leg of an island tour, but splendid in its own way. Very quiet and calm away from the busy streets of Venice.

These were worth the trip to the island of Torcello - thoroughly explained by the audio guide which was provided with our ticket , the mosaics were a close second to the ones in St Marks and quieter! We had ample time to explore the church at leisure - if there is time to spare to visit a third island... More
