Don't miss this beautifully maintained and restored Mayan pyramid complex. Set in beautiful countryside, the pyramid rises up and up, through several chambers, royal living quarters and holy places. Views in all directions, wonderful pre-Columbian carvings. A breathtaking site.

while the tour bus had a bit of trouble getting to our destination, this journey usually takes about 2.5 hours to get to from san cristobal, which seemed better than the longer trip to palenque. the ruins are smaller in scale, and are actually only partially excavated, but our excellent tour guide, Diego, was informed and funny. we did not... We enjoyed it very much as part of a trip with other places on the way to palenque, almost no people on the site which makes it real special climbing to the top!

Tonina is not of the scale of many more famous sites but allows visitors to enter the "underworld" of a tomb, climb high on a set of steep steps and get some excellent views.

At first I didn't know this site is Mayan. The place where it is located is so different from the jungles of Palenque or mediterranian vegetation of the sites in Yucatan. This site is surrounded by beautiful hills, like from a fairy tale - literally! The site itself is like a huge giant pyramid composed of many temples, palace, and various... More

I've been in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas before but I've never heard about Toniná archaeological site, luckly last time I went to Chiapas one taxi driver told me about this great archaeological site so I asked about it in the hotel. Almost nobody offers you this tour but you have to ask about it, have you seen Machu... More

We were trying to figure out if we could possibly do a day trip to Palenque from San Cristóbal De Las Casas when two separate people suggested Tonina would be a better option. Not one of the four of us had ever heard of it but put our trust in those who recommended it. We used a tour group from... More

We stopped in Ocosingo on our way to Palenque. We were driving with two young kids so Ocosingo was a great middle point to stop at. The drive to Palenque is very long from the Tuxtla airport, although it is a relatively short distance. After seeing Palenque, I've visit to Tonina was very relaxed and just as impressive.

Easily the best ruins I have been to......! You get the whole place to yourself with no guards which gives this place a real sense of adventure, something that was missing with all the rest of the famous Mayan ruins, the fact that people miss this place is a conundrum, I want you to go, but I also don't! I... More
