A lovely castle ruin on the Solent. This is run by the English heritage, the grounds are free and well used by families. There are 2 car parks close by, but it's a very popular place so the car parks are very busy. The path inside the castle are okay for wheelchairs/pushchairs but the walk around the outside can be... Nice castle in very scenic location, good to explore. Not too big but worth a visit. Big grounds so take a football, frisbee, picnic etc.

Had a great afternoon here with 2 teenagers: historical interest, fun to climb the keep spiral stairs, and great view from the roof. You really need a guide to learn about the history (the audio guide was ok but the 'characters' were a bit annoying). Interesting exhibition in the keep. Only had time for the castle itself so will have... More

This is probably one of the best preserved Roam forts of the country. It is free to wonder around the castle grounds within the walls but if you wish to go into the keep and the rest of the ruins payment is required as it is run by English Heritage. However it is well worth a visit and the view... More

This is an old castle dating back to roman times, there are several interesting exhibits and an on-going renovation. The castle grounds are free to enter and the enclosed walls with only a couple of entrances make this a safe place to let young children happily run around. When we were there in April on a warm day, many visitors... More

An historic castle in its own grounds which is maintained in very good condition. A full and detailed history is available inside the castle and this takes some considerable time to read and digest but is well worth the effort. The grounds and walls are well worth exploring as is the surrounding land and waters. A very worthwhile visit.

Disappointed to arrive at the castle Wednesday at 1 pm to find it closed. All the signs saying it's opening time. The castle looked awesome from the outside. Simple communication could have explained why it wasn't open or simply said closed due to unforeseen circumstances.

You can see most of the castle as a non paying visitor and enter the church in the castle grounds, without paying to enter the keep and other English heritage controlled areas. If you enter the keep do go to the top for the best views, but do find the easy access stairs to avoid the winding stone spiral staircase... More
