A true gem of a museum!
My son and I visited the Centre on a dull day. Our visit was far from that!! What a wonderful small museum celebrating local fishing heritage. The films, exhibits and boats are all so interesting. Harry showed us round (even a private visit to the Rocket House). He was keen to share his knowledge and love of the collection. He is a true asset to the Museum. Had a coffee in the cafe which was bustling. Free parking too. A lovely way to spend a rainy morning and it would probably be even better on a sunny day as it’s right on the bay……

A lovely small museum and cafe
This is a very small a museum and the entrance price of £2.50 for a adult dictates this. For such a small museum there is alot of information about the RNLI and the people of the town which is interesting, what we liked were the black and white photos and films. A must if your in the area. I also highly recommend the adjoining cafe, the prices are very reasonable and quality really good. We recommend the raspberry ripple cake.

    No dog friendly
Love the maritime centre but sadly they don't allow dogs. They say they used to in the small area as you enter. There is a huge area at the end of the centre that could be used if canopy was put there as when it is raining people are excluded with dogs. They could maybe charge an entrance fee for dogs to encourage well behaved owners/dogs They just don't seem interested at all 😔

Visited Maritime Centre for coffee today. Been a couple of times recently and all has been well. Today, however, people from outside coming in to use toilets and this was allowed despite the sign saying “no public toilets”. Makes a nonsense of the track and trace scheme as everyone in the cafe was asked to give details of who they were and mobile numbers etc., but these people were not asked. The man on Reception said they could not ask for these details. If you are worried about COVID stay away, they are not sticking to the rules. We will not be going back.

Thank you proseccofriends for this review. You have ably pointed out the huge difficulties our volunteers have faced over the ever-changing Government Covid19 Guidance. At the time of your visit our volunteer was acting correctly. Sadly we have tried our best to prevent non-customers coming off the beach to use our toilets and in the process, the volunteers have been subjected to verbal abuse many times, on a daily basis. Covid has certainly brought us many challenges but we have always adhered to the Government Guidelines to be a Covid Safe venue.

Called at the Maritime centre to have lunch with the intention of looking around the centre once we had eaten. We were showed to our table by a pleasant lady given a menu and told someone would come to take our order soon. Sadly this did not happen. We sat for about fifteen minutes admiring the view but being ignored by the waitress. Eventually another family arrived and were seated on the table next to us. The family only waited about a minute before a cafe worker came over to serve them. Feeling rather humiliated we decided to leave and walked on the beach instead.

Popped in for coffee and scones ahead of a coastal walk along the prom. Both the cheese scone and fruit scone were fresh and light really delicious. There was a musical trio playing and singing which created a really nice ambience on a Saturday morning.

Ordered coffee and sandwiches. Got the coffee almost straight away, but waited over 20 minutes for the food, by which time we had drunk the coffee. Did advise the staff, who did apologise, but still charged for another 2x coffees.
Not offered choice of bread for the sandwiches, they came in white bread that was a bit dry. The coffee could do with being hotter.

We sat outside in the sunshine in November and had a panini which was very good and the prices reasonable. It is a busy cafe which is always good. Whew didn't go into the museum as we had our dog with us and it was such a lovely day we wanted to stay outside. Newbiggin promenade is also lovely and worth a walk along the coast.

Went here for a rainy day activity. - The centre has three rooms full of local history. Great films, activities for the kids and a bargain price to get in.
There is also a great cafe which overlooks by the sea the the famous couple looking out at sea. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
