Pidhirtsi castle it’s a stunning palace in a beautiful environment (And don’t forget the domed church, stunningly decorated with lovely frescoes and tromp-d’oeil inside). Unfortunately inside there is nothing left of its grandeur, although seems that restoration is taking place slowly. A place to see if you are nearby.

The castle of Pidhirtsi is one of the most beautiful castles of Ukraine - it has been even used in soviet version of D'Artagnan and the three musketeers’ movie as a decoration, showing Versailles.
Though the renovation is needed - its steel extremely beautiful. Especially in the second half of the spring. Apart from the castle itself the amazing view of the hills behind make you feel your self like if you have been transferred back in time for couple of centuries

Unfortunately there are no civilized touristic attractions nearby – so take some food and drinks with you. The hills are perfect place for a small picnic.

Palace-style Renaissance is in restoration. Open to visitors only a courtyard and three rooms in the basement, where he lives, more than 300 years, a ghost - a princess dressed in white. If you're lucky, hear her beautiful songs!

Pidhirski Castle was built as a recreational palace and not for strategic reasons in the 17th century. This castle is a short distance from Lviv and fits in well with stops to Olesko and Zolochiv castle in a day trip.

According to our guide, this castle has went through some major abuse, to having all its furnishings removed by a former owner and then looted and vandalized by the Russian army during WW I. Afterwards it became a sanitoruim and then was victimized by fire. We never did get inside as our guide said it was basically just a shell and that restoration work was being done sporadically, but we did walk around the castle and the grounds. In the rear of the castle is a huge balcony that at one time must have looked over some beautiful gardens with a commanding view in the background. You could tell that at one time it must have been a spectacular place.

Walking into the castle a gentleman dressed in Ukrainian garb was selling embroidered shirts and had refreshments and snacks. We tried the traditional Ukrainian drink kvas and it was quite good, I think it is fermented wheat and berries like a light beer. At the end of the lane by the church was a couple booths set up selling souvenirs. They have this most amazing jet black pottery, this was the first time we had seen it but it was also available deeper into the Carpathian Mountain area, I just wished I had left more room in my luggage to bring some back.

Our only regret at Pidhirski was that we were not able to get inside but we were running short of time. It would be great to come back in a couple of years and see if any of the restoration work has transformed it back to its' former grandeur.

This castle looks stunning even if it is a bit dilapidated. There's not much to see inside, one small room with a brief history as it is still being reconstructed. Outside though it makes for great photos, especially in the autumn. This is clearly a very popular location for bridal and wedding photo shoots, as there were at least five newlyweds there with their entourage :) there are also a small souvenir market with lots of warm socks and sheepskin related products for sale. The chapel across the castle is very grand and looks to be operational but only at times of service, you cannot go in otherwise. Travel by car is advised or with a tour group.

Very large palace with splendid views of the inner courtyard. There is also a very beautiful view from the other side of the castle.

The Sovjet period and subsequent fire sure took care of this jewel! Closed(for restoration? No activities seen) but the location and architectural structure are stunning.

Pidhirtsi is the best, imo, castle on the Golden Horseshoe circuit and perhaps one of the best castles I visited during my time in Ukraine. Yet it is the worst maintained and restored. The architecture style of the castle is beautiful and stunning. While not abandoned, the rundown state of the castle gives it an atmospheric brooding aura,
This castle had suffered through war, fire and destruction in its past. But the shell and architecture of the castle remain impressive and it is easy to see what restoration can do to heighten the worth of the place and uncover its potential.

There is supposedly a ghost haunting the castle. The wife of a previous owner was murdered by her husband because of an affair, and he buried her in the walls of the basement. This myth does add to the castle's appeal. While it's fun to peer at each of the darkened windows of the castle expecting to see a woman in white peeking back out, the only thing spotted roaming the halls of the castle so far, besides the tourists, is a cute kitty that lives on the grounds.

Unfortunately this castle is in a very poor state and needs a lot of restoration. You also can't go inside. Having said that you can see what a magnificent place it must have been and i hope it will be restored over time. It's close to Olesko Castle and so if you are going there this place is also worth going to. I am glad we went and i would recommend that you go here too.
