Unknown Soviet Past

Read about this on the "Kings Road" map & just knew we had to call in & see it. What a fascinating part of Finnish history & really so recently when you think about it (Who would have thought the Soviets having occupied the area). We were given a personal tour with all the information about the occupation. If your in Finland & coming past here it is well worth the visit, I so glad we stopped in & found out more about it!!

Very interesting snapshot of Finnish history

This is a small, but very interesting museum which documents the Soviet occupation of this area. We were given a personal tour by a very knowledgeable guide who gave us a full appreciation of this time in history.

Igor Museum tells about the lease-period for the Soviet Union 1944-1956
May 2013 • Solo
Igor Museum tells of the time when the Soviet Union had a naval base in Porkkala. In summer, Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11.00 to 16.00 and in winter on Saturdays from 12.00 to 16.00 and for groups by appointment. Entrance fee for adults 5 EUR.

It was interesting to visit the museum and read of the Porkkala rental period and the fact that the area received a lot of international support in order to restore the normal conditions of living. The guides are very dedicated to their work. In a short walking distance is also Degerby chuch and cemetery.

If you are interested, a larger entity of the Porkkala Parenthesis is arranged in the form of excursion ( check www.porkkala.net)
