Kota Belud is a town built around its Tamu or marketplace. In fact, Kota Belud is host to the biggest Annual Tamu in Sabah.

This local Tamu is open daily and is large by local standards. The villagers sell their local produce here - often a mishmash of whatever their land produces. So don't expect to find neatly displayed rows of fruit and vegetable like a proper grocery store. We saw a lady selling mangoes and crab - you get the idea.

Here you will find the rich traders to those selling a few sticks of ginger to buy their next meal. My heart melts whenever I see the sad looking folk with their wilted herbs - and have often ended up buying too much herbs just to help them out.

It a nice place to catch a taste of the local delicacies. There are too many food stalls to sample everything in a day.

Go to the local Tamu for a taste of living the Kota Belud life.

We went there for our school trip and it was a great experience for non-locals.
They sold plenty of different foods, unique crafts and also learning by-hand experiences.
But the cleanliness is not very well maintained as they did not prepare enough dustbins. Also the sellers don't really mind about the hygiene so I don't really prefer to eat a lot there.
The safety is good because many police officers and traffic controllers are there.
Overall, it was a good school trip.

It was more like another Sunday market, I remembered it used to be like a farmers market a real “Tamu” . There are more store selling cheap clothings, shoes, toys than native farmers selling their produce. Very disappointing- especially for the tourists, who we’ve driven over an hour to see what they thought is a traditional native market selling native grown produce but now selling cheap products from China.

Travelled all the way to tamu besar kota belud today from kk.
What a let down it was.
They announced it to be 22 and 23rd. Oct but we found not many shops were open, no organised programs, dancers not ready, only a few shops worth visiting, the others are just pasar malam stuff. And most of all the place is dirty n filthy.
Organisers can do a better job if u seriously want to draw tourist.
Finally dont waste yr time n effort. Just go to the regular sunday gaya street market in kk.

It was rainy day, the time i reached here almost 11am, some of the stalls were closed. The 'tamu' sell local fruits, handicraft, food and snack, seafood etc. Must try the huge tapioca cracker, penjaram and ring biscuit. It is sunday market, make sure come here on SUNDAY.

Kota Belud is my hometown so technically I would be bias when writing this. But truthfully, this place is a gem just waiting to be uncovered.

When you first step foot inside, you will be greeted by an array of colors. The arts and crafts are really exceptional and makes you appreciate local talent. The food that are sold here are plenty! Salted fish is royalty here. Don't forget to taste the penjaram and cendol bajau because they're my favorite!

All in all, you have to see it to believe it.

As early as 6am, local producers congregate at the Sunday market to sell their wares. Although it is within walking distance from the downtown core, it may be a good idea to take a taxi the first time out to know exactly where it is. Also, the heat and the walk up the slope can be draining. Bring plenty of small change!

The market was bustling with vendors and buyers. Fresh fruits and vegetables are at very affordable price. You can find many new fruits found only in Sabah, and they are really, really delicious. The vendors will attentively answer my "ridiculous" questions such as "what is this?", how do you cook it? How do you eat it? Etc etc. The best part of it is i managed to find and buy the tarap fruit. To those who have the opportunity to go to any pasar tamu, do look for the "tarap fruit". If you are lucky, you can find them even if it is out of seadon
