About
Resting amongst links golfing heaven in East Lothian, Longniddry is a fabulous course. Formed in 1921, Longniddry Golf Club is a links golf course designed by Harry S Colt in East Lothian, Scotland, situated on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, only 18 miles east of Edinburgh. Longniddry is the closest seaside course to Edinburgh. “Longniddry Golf Club is delighted to be hosting the pre-qualifying event for the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at Gullane in 2018,” said club captain John McDougall.

A superb course in great condition with a welcoming Pro Team. Clubhouse facilities were good and the catering team treated us very well.

It isn’t a links & doesn’t pretend to be a links course. Don’t let that put you off. It’s an interesting & high quality course with different feels as you progress through the course.
I think it improves & grows on you.
I loved it.
Staff are very friendly & efficient.

A little bit disappointed in the course in that it is not a links course (It is quite close to the sea) but has more of a parkland feel. Not too challenging and pleasant enough to play, but overpriced. Layout is OK but no real memorable holes for me. To be fair there are no bad holes either.

A couple of the greens were not in great condition and the rest were slow. Slow round as stuck behind an old members four-ball who, despite losing two holes on the group in front at one point, did not let us through.

I have played most courses in East Lothian and this is a lovely addition to the list.
Not a really long course but quite right on places and the greens are small and tricky.
The greens ran really nice not overly quick like at a Gullane or North Berwick but very true and a nice surface.
Plenty of thought needed off the tee with irons, three woods and driver needed.
The young assistant Pro was very friendly and welcoming.
There were available nets to loosen up and a putting green and good pitching area.
Has a Links feel to the turf but has plenty of trees on the front nine. Back nine is more linksy in general.
Really enjoyed it although at £90 is a little dearer than I believe it should be. Kilspindie & The Glen in my eyes are a little better and are £75 & £70 respectively.
Still a lovely course and if you like the golfing area a must play.

I think they need to update and change the entry forms for Open competitions in order to know exactly what you are entering for? Very confusing.

The back 9 is stunning. What a course! The wind blows off the sea though so prepare for a challenge!

Although the catering closed at 4 pm for winter hours we did manage to be fed & an extensive menu on offer many starters & mains . Fish & chips with salad was chosen for two & it was absolutely delicious & large fish ! The other was the beef burger & several onion rings & chips also delicious. The final choice was scampi & chips & salad & yet another good sized portion ... well done chef !

We had high hopes as the course is nestled into one of the magical corners of golfing coast in Scotland, and Longniddry has recently hosted qualifying for the Scottish Open. At £80 on a Sunday it seemed to be the price of a superior course.

Sadly, we were disappointed. After the stunning views and sand dune links of Goswick the day before (£26 pp after 2pm) and the undulating links and impeccable greens of Gullane No 2 on Friday (at £60) I’m afraid that Longniddry was memorable only for the very friendly bar chatter and hearty £4 pie, beans and chips afterwards.

The course is mostly mediocre (with greens of uneven quality) and very poorly laid out, as you’re often in the direct line of fire from other players while putting out or teeing off.

Essentially it’s a fair parkland course with some added interest from one or two raised greens and with some sea views from the last 5 or 6 holes (but nothing to remotely match those at Goswick or Gullane). The course condition is fair to good.

I’ve golfed in Scotland on a dozen or so occasions and have played many courses I would love to return to (Dornoch, Boat o Garten, Pitlochry, Crail, and St Andrews New Course or Jubilee, to name a few),
but Longniddry is definitely not one of them. At £80 a ticket the club secretary must have a snigger as he pours out his malt to toast the visitors who drop by thinking they’re in for a golfing treat.

Dear Julian, I read your review today and was saddened to hear your views on course condition, quality of greens and the price you paid on a Sunday. The club takes great pride in its green staff and we have been repeatedly complimented for course condition and the greens, even from the players who recently played at the Aberdeen Asset Management Seniors Open Qualifier in July. regards Awhite6000

Play this course every September with a group of friends and it is always in excellent condition and greens true. Does get busy as it is a popular course but is one of the finest in the area. Not a pure links but still worth a visit.
