- Josie H33 contributionsFantastic ExperienceHad the most amazing ride out across the moor's. Despite our first impression on arrival where the first staff member we saw blanked us, no greeting or acknowledgement, then was met by Ceris, who was really friendly and welcoming. Ceris was really amazing with my partner who was a little rusty as hadn’t ridden in a while, she did an amazing job with him, assessing him and building his confidence and skills up. Both staff taking us out were lovely and did a great job, really the best hacking I’ve ever experienced and the most spectacular location. Horses were great, healthy and clearly love their job. I did read the one negative review written, about the poor condition of their stables with this in mind I had a sneak look at their stalls and can honestly say they were fine, I had no concerns at all. Thank you all for an amazing experience, we will definitely be back. Jo & DarrenVisited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2024
- Lucy M6 contributionsFab riding on the open moorHad a lovely 1.5hr hack on the moors. Paige took me out and she was a fab guide - got to have quite a few canters. I rode a lovely little cob called Oreo - so responsive, she was speedy but had excellent brakes. I had a really fab time and will definitely come again.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 May 2024
- Gil13 contributionsLovely hackHad a fabulous hack on Dartmoor. My partner and I hadn’t ridden for a little while and the lady who took us out was great and other staff at the yard were very friendly. The horses knew the terrain and were responsive. We enjoyed canters with lovely scenery. Would certainly do this again if in the area!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 July 2024
- Nicola R1 contributionSimply FabulousFrom the initial phone call booking my first visit to arriving at the yard, I was made to feel very welcome. Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff, and horses and ponies obviously loved, well looked after and very happy in their work. I was lucky enough to be given Trigger to ride, and he was brilliant, certainly put any initial nerves to rest. The one and a half hour hack was fabulous through spectacular scenery. Paige our guide was friendly and knows the area very, so we had the opportunity for some lovely trotting and cantering. The other ladies in the group who all ride together regularly made me feel so welcome, which made the experience all the more enjoyable. Riding on Dartmoor is something very special, with cows, sheep and of course wild ponies all seen during the hack. Thank you to everyone at Cholwell for this amazing experience. I’ll definitely be back and I can’t wait.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 July 2024
- Irvine L1 contributionFabulous day out - just perfect. As an experienced (older) rider, I take my 7 yr old granddaughter riding at Cholwell whenever she visits the West Country and it's always the highlight of the holidays. The horses and ponies are obviously well cared for; fit, healthy and eager to trot and canter across Dartmoor, they are clearly looked after by a dedicated team, led by Donna and Diane. The staff are welcoming, invariably polite, attentive and patient with all standards of riders, with Paige being an absolute star. I have watched the staff take both complete novices and experiences riders out on the moor and can attest to the smiles of all riders when they return to the yard having had a fabulous ride across some breathtaking scenery. Hats, boots, chaps and even foul weather clothing is provided, so there's no excuse for not having a ride in less than perfect weather, an occasional feature of Dartmoor, although it's best in fine weather to get the best views of the open countryside. In summary, it's a perfect day out riding across Dartmoor and I can't recommend Cholwell enough.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 August 2024
- Fearless178923723622 contributionsTrekking on Dartmoor with Queenie, Sally and Oreo.My friend Sally and I had a lovely time, at Cholwell. The staff were friendly, chatty and attentive, to our safety and needs. Many staff to take care of various levels of riders. The horses were to ride. Donna and her family were so helpful, offering free riding gear to wear. I can only say, having not ridden for many years, sitting on The lovely Queenie, she put my mind at ease. The horses were well cared for, being out on Dartmoor amongst them was so pleasurable. Thank you to you all at Cholwell 🌻💐 see you again 🌻Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 August 2024

Great riding for all abilities as we were matched to our rides. The facilities were excellent and were able to borrow appropriate clothing for the weather that day. I would book again, definitely.Visited February 2025Travelled soloWritten 11 February 2025

7 family members of all ages-converged on Cholwel for a riding trek over Dartmoor . I have to say it was a wonderful experience . Donna and her staff were very professional in their care and tuition particularly for first time riders . The views across Dartmoor were spectacular and the horses were very well behaved and gave it all a very relaxed feel . There was a hot drink available at the end of the trek and it was an invigorating and value for money experience .

Went for 2 hacks in September at Cholwell and loved both of them. They catered for both myself, an experienced rider who'd lost all confidence in an accident, and my partner who is a complete novice perfectly!
Right from the start, Donna catered to my partner's need, instructing him on his position, aids and also why you do each thing (as an engineer, this is extremely important to him!). For myself she allowed me to take things at my own pace and get used to being back in the saddle! By the end of the first hour hack, my partner was doing rising trot, steering and opening the gate!! By the second, he had fooled people into thinking he'd been riding longer than he had and I was beaming from plenty of canters over the Moors - something I hadn't enjoyed for about 5years!! We will definitely be back next time we visit Dartmoor and can't recommend them highly enough, for both beginner and experienced riders!

Arriving at the stables we were immediately made to feel welcome. As a family group of varying standards & varying levels of confidence I had thought it may just be a case of going with the slowest and following nose to tail. But once matched up with our horses we were introduced to Jack who led us onto the Moor, he was fantastic. Not just accompanied, but actively instructing and teaching, with all of us getting to canter either individually or in very safe groupings. The experience far exceeded our expectations. The horses, Bessie, Scrabble, Monty and Bob, were beautifully behaved, and a reflection of the level of care they get. The girls, who had had some riding lessons, said this experience felt like "proper riding". We will definitely be returning & reccomending to our friends.

We had a wonderful ride through Dartmoor. The horses are well cared for, very well behaved and easy to ride. Our guide Paige was super nice and we had a good chat with her. You get boots and a helmet and ride in groups with people who have a similar amount of experience. We can definitely recommend it!

Myself, husband and 2 boys (7 & 11) enjoyed an hours trek while on holiday in Dartmoor. The boys were complete beginners, myself & husband have only ridden a few times and a very long time ago but we were all extremely well looked after. We rode on Bromley, JJ, Rosie & Ziggy who were all amazingly calm. Donna and a lovely blonde lady (sorry I can't remember her name!) were fantastic with us, especially me who got a bit nervous when we started trotting! There were others in our group who were much more experienced but the staff were able to tailor the hour so that we all got 100% out of it. Would highly recommend and would definitely book again if we return to the area.

Reservations are made exclusively by telephone. They take into account our equestrian experience in order to assign us the most appropriate horse. On site, they provide bombs and boots. The staff are lovely and very well organized. There were four of us with two guides, we were able to trot and gallop in a heavenly setting on the backs of brave animals (we rode London and Trigger).

Had a brilliant time at Cholwell Stables and will be back. Our four year old had a half an hour ride on a lovely horse called Mercury. The rest of the family aged eight, ten, forty, forty-two and sixty-three also enjoyed it.
We all had minimal experience riding and were well taken care of and not made to feel like we didn’t belong. Got taken out for 90 mins on a gloriously sunny day across Dartmoor and the best bit was our four year old got to ride out with us for the majority of his ride. He then turned back and got to groom his horse whilst he waited for us.
All the staff were lovely, helpful and knowledgeable. Thank you, and see you again soon.

A fantastic morning on the moor. Riding straight out of the stables (having borrowed waterproofs ready for the Dartmoor weather!), it was a fantastic hack through the countryside - by far the best way to see Dartmoor from the back of a pony! Cantering at full tilt on a pony that was loving the ride as much as the rider - great fun! Thanks so much Donna and team for looking after us. Very reasonable prices too!

Highly recommended! Myself and my 12 year old son booked a 1hr ride as a treat for the end of the summer holidays and had a fantastic time. Staff were friendly and helpful. The horses 'Jim' and 'Trigger' gave us a great ride, they were well schooled, responsive and safe. They catered for all abilities, some of us cantering off on slightly different trails while my son was well looked after on a shorter canter. Our escorts (Jack and Millie???) gave my son some really good instruction to help him get along with his horse straight away and get the most out of his ride. We had a lovely time THANK YOU 😊

A very enjoyable ride for four novice riders. Covid secure felt very safe, tackle all cleaned between riders, limited numbers in The stables at anyone time. Lead rider for my two children Abby was very friendly and put the kids at ease. My daughter has always dreamt of riding today she achieved that. Not many stables now do riding for complete beginners so pleased to find this company. Ride out straight into Dartmoor and managed a few little rising trots

Can I bring my own horse and join the rides/stay at your facilities or a local B&B with my horse stabled?
Thanks, Charlotte

Sorry, no idea either! Give them a ring. It's perfect riding country, right in the middle of the moor.

Hi. I am interested in staying at your hotel on an all inclusive basis. I have never done an AI stay anywhere before and was wondering what I might be still required to pay for so that I can budget accordingly. For example, I am keen to do some snorkelling - how much would that cost? What is the protocol on tipping? Thank you
