About
Please note we will be closed for Christmas from 12 pm 24th Dec until Jan. 3rd. Group visits may be pre-booked in advance during this time. Please telephone for details. Based in an old coaching inn and posting house, this is the UK's most comprehensive and extensive collection of equestrian artefacts. It represents the history of all of us; from travel and transport to war and recreation, from agriculture to industry, all were powered by the horse and many rare items tell these stories. Nine rooms and two major passageways are all full of interest. See an original Mail Coach and a two hundred-year-old sleigh. You can even have cream teas in the courtyard too!

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Extensive, informative and fine collection well presented. Worth a journey to see. Unique. Horse items from around the globe and from thousands of years ago, to the early 20th century.

We had a super visit today. Starting with a quiz to identify 20 objects on the table, none of us managed to identify them all. Then a fascinating tour of the museum. It was well labelled and Sally and her assistant answered our many questions. We saw the Mail coach and sleigh. Our two 11 year olds loved every minute and there was something for everyone. Recommend the coffee shop too.

Just the name, “Museum of the Horse” tells you that this is a unique sort of place. Situated in a small, sleepy town, I expected a small, sleepy museum and was amazed at just how much equestrian stuff has been collected from all over the world. Think of every piece of tack, from ornate saddles to the simplest bridles, and they have it here - in abundance!
Importantly, they also have full descriptive and factual notes re everything, so even if you aren’t remotely “horsey”, there’s enough information on hand to make everything clear. It really is a stunning collection and well worth a look if you are in the area.

This an amazing collection about every possible aspect of horses, equipment, the people and the ways they have supported our lives until cars came along. It is clearly and attractively displayed and is clearly a huge labour of love. It is truly international, with saddles and equipment from all over the world. Mostly the rooms are thematic - the Origins of Riding (some incredible pieces), Hunting, Horses in War, Mailcoaches, Transport, Heavy Horses, Racing etc. The Museum will clearly appeal more to people who have some familiarity with horses but anyone interested in horses and people will find much of interest. As someone who used to ride, albeit only in a very amateur way, I would have liked to see maybe some mini videos on how people rode horses with the ferocious spurs and bits in the cabinets. Even a hundred years ago riding must have been very different to what is now.

We took a group of girl guides to visit the museum. They had a great time and the staff were very helpful, socially distanced of course. The exhibits are well maintained and were explained to the girls. There are some amazing and unique things to see and learn about their history.
Well worth the visit.

This is a lovely little museum situated in an old coaching inn. When we visited on the Monday before Christmas, the museum was shut, but the gallery assistant manning the downstairs art gallery opened up the museum for us. It’s a really interesting museum. Even if you’re not a “horsey” person, you will find something to interest you here. I loved the exhibits on horses in WWI, the pit ponies in coal mines and the American cowboys. If you’re a “horsey” person, you will be interested in the vast collection of stirrups, spurs and saddles. There’s loads more to see too. Ample free parking. Adult admission £5.50.

What an amazing find. If you are interested in the history of horses it is most definitely worth a visit. The museum houses an amazing collection of information and memorabilia going back centuries from many parts of the world. Some of the topics includes veterinary, racing, military, coaching and heavy horses. The display of clothing used for riding was iconic... It even showed habits worn by women riders. The exhibition was well laid out and labelled.
We were very fortunate to have met and spoken with Sally Mitchell who founded the Museum.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. There are many intriguing equestrian artifacts from past decades. I found the collection of bits particularly amazing and the side saddles and various captivating pictures. They are continually adding new pieces so there will always be something new to see.
