The National Park Zuid-Kennemerland is the dune area between Zandvoort and IJmuiden. Accessible from a.o. Overveen and Bloemendaal. Very rich forest and dune landscape, full of birds and also big grass eating animals such as wild cows and horses. There is a fantastic bird lake including an observation lodge. At the beach, there is bicycle parking and at least one restaurant (Parnassia).

The landscape is very varying. There's patches of woodland, sand dunes, little lakes, wetlands. Then there's a lot of wild animals, several different breeds of birds, wild horses, rabbits, cows... I recommend the bird watch hut at the "Vogelmeer".

Lovely walk through beautiful nature. alternately through the woods, dunes and sea. Coffee to go at beach bar Parnassia. The blue route is about a 10 km walk

I booked a guided walk through the website of the park

I paid 15 euro for just a bit over 2 hours of a pleasant walk in the nature. We saw wild horses and bisons. Amazing.

The ranger gave us an interesting explanation on how and why the bosons are there and other interesting info on the flowers and the natural surroundings

Train from Amsterdam to Haarlem (9euro return ticket) and the connexion bus nr 81 to the stop "parkeerplaats De Bokkedoorns" which was the meeting point.

Great place for bike or walking routes. The park offers you a serie of amazing views, by exploring different landscapes. It is a extremely sensitive experience!

It also has a great structure. At the entrance you can get a free map, with different route options. All the way is signalized, what is great for a park of its size.

The only highlight of an otherwise disappointing trip. Took the train to Overveen, a 15 minutes walk to the visitor centre. Counter staff were excellent and let us try several bikes before renting (as the first few were too big). Biked all the way to the beach and back, saw several animals such as wild horses. Sand dunes and landscape was breathtaking. Only quibble was that signs along the way didn’t seem to correspond to map. We got lost and ran out of time, and so had to be satisfied with a shorter trail. Mostly locals here, and we were lucky enough to meet a few who gave us directions! Also lots of friendly smiles and greetings, a welcome change from Amsterdam.

This bike trip was fabulous. We took the train out of Amsterdam Centraal station to Zandvoort. We rented bikes at at a shop in town and rode north to the park. It is a lovely park with really nice riding trails. The topography varies throughout your ride. You will ride through lovely rolling sand dunes, thick forest and little towns. We saw many bison, deer, and rabbits. Be sure to go east to see the wetlands--full of waterfowl. We stopped in a little town called IJmuiden and had lunch at a cute cafe with really fantastic hamburgers. We rode through town and around before coming back to Zandvoort to take the train back to Amsterdam. A lovely little get-away from the city. The town of Zandvoort is a beach town, although swimming in the North Sea didn't seem all that attractive due to the cold water, but certainly great for a walk along the beach. Multiple places to eat in town. Train tickets (Sprinter) were about 11 Euro per person.

It doesnt really feel like a national park as there is no entrance or information etc. but its a beautiful day trip out from Amsterdam! lovely wide beaches surrounded by dunes (covered in vegetation) and further south some lovely shaded forests.
We cycled around on the bikes paths and went through the gorgeous leafy forests full of wild ponies and hairy cows just chilling in the sunshine. A glorious day out on the bikes.

Walking might not be as good as its quite far from the train/ferry before you get into nature. But once you do its very pleasant around there.

The beach restaurant is quite expensive and take AGES to get service- we left without service after 20 mins and instead we ended up buying bread and cheese from the super market- but there are lots of nice benches (not tables) in the forest area.

the MAIN reason it only gets 4 stars was the signs! Next to the ferry dock there is a giant map showing two main cycle routes- Green and Red. Green is meant to go along the coast to the beach and then back through the dunes. Red goes south through some dunes into the forest area. Dont bother with the Green- it is boring and the bike path is along a motorway. But it will take you to the beach if thats what you're only mission is.

Try to find the red route its much more beautiful and away from the main road- But be warned- neither the red or green route is marked with signs. The problem is after you leave the map there is no more mention of a green or a red route, and all paths are marked with a little green circle with a number inside- no red circles. And on top of that the numbers change at every junction. so you never know where you are or where you are going!.

So my REALLY IMPORTANT advice is to find a good bike route map of the park before you go.
We had a really lovely time but we did get lost and leave the main route a few times and every 5 mins we arrived at a new junction and spent 5 minutes trying to work out which way to go.. a little stressful when you are trying to make your way back to the ferry and there is no-one to ask and no signs except these little green circles with numbers in them! :)

How to get there: We took the Fast Flying Ferry from Amsterdam Central Station (about 30mins trip, leaving every 40 mins, cost about 15 Euro return incl bike).
TIP- queue up early on the deck as they can only take 20 bikes on the boat.

If you are near Amsterdam, Haarlem or Zandvoort, and want to hike, bike or horseback ride in a beautiful setting of woods, high grassy dunes, lakes, and amidst waterfowl, wild Highland cattle, ponies and other wildlife, then this is the National park for you. Easy access by car, bus or train, this can easily give you a challenging day of activities. The entrance has an education area, gift shop and cafe, with helpful friendly staff. Do as little or as much as you please. Its so close to the hectic Rundstad yet world's away.

You can visit this beautiful National Park in different ways. By car entering from Bloemendaal strand, driving to the parking at restaurant Parnassia. By foot or bike entering from Zeeweg in Overveen or the entrance in Santpoort Zuid or Bleek en Berg in Santpoort North. The park has many different trails. I love the bike ride from the Santpoort Zuid entrance right to the beach at Parnassia. It takes about 40 min. You'll find wetlands and wild horses as well as Scottish highlanders roaming the fields. The landscapes are stunning. Rabbits and other small rodents, many different kinds of birds. You might talk to one of the rangers and have them explain the breeding of the wild horses and the ecosystem management introducing the highlanders. Pick nick only in designated areas.
