About
Here at Maerim Elephant Sanctuary our mission is to rescue miss-treated elephants and provide them with a beautiful environment where they are safe, loved and cared for. We are 100% against elephant riding, performances, tricks and any method of training or discipline where pain is inflicted to achieve a result. We believe that by sharing our passion with our guests we can all contribute towards providing rescued elephants a beautiful life which they deserve. In supporting our cause you will make memories to treasure as you roam freely with or magnificent elephants. Feed them, bond with them and bath with them. By choosing our sanctuary you will be actively contributing to saving the next gentle giant from a life of slavery. Let us assure you that we are not a money making outfit, we are here because of our passion for elephant. Along this journey you be informed of the realities of caring for elephants and the cruelties they endure before we rescue them.

    Absolutely brilliant!!!
We were recommended this Elephant Sanctuary (experience) by a husband & wife van driver/tour guide out the front of our hotel. I'm always a bit sceptical but my family and I went along to Maerim Elephant Sanctuary and it was a brilliant experience. Learnt some basic commands in Thai, learning a bit about the Elephants, fed them, walked them along a track then finished off with bathing the Elephants. They are well treated, no hooks or prods. Tony the guide and Elephant carers were great, very interactive and Tony is a comedian (ripping bloke). Highly recommended this sanctuary.
Hi BigTone72 We are so happy that you came to visit us with your family. We very much appreciate your support. We hope to see you again in the future. All the best from all at Maerim Elephant Sanctuary.

A Day of Joy and Wonder at Maerim Elephant Sanctuary
Maerim Elephant Sanctuary was absolutely amazing! The entire experience, from the friendly staff to the happy elephants, was pure joy. Feeding, mud bathing, and learning about the elephants was unforgettable. Our guide, Dee, was exceptional - knowledgeable and funny. I can't recommend Maerim enough for an unforgettable and ethical elephant encounter. Can't wait to visit again!
Hello Rukie_bi. We are so grateful that you trusted in our Sanctuary. It is amazing that we, together can support these beautiful gentle giants by making memories to treasure forever. All the best for the future. Maerim Elephant Sanctuary.

Meet an elephant. Nice outing around Chiang Mai, for adults and for children.
You are brought to their site "upcountry" (40 minutes drive) and will meet 5 elephants. (the baby elephant was not available when we went). You can feed them with raw veggies. Then the elephants (and you) are walked to a mud pool where you can give them a "mud bath" (you go also in the mud - if you want), followed by a "water bath". Each "bath" takes about 10 minutes. Then you can shower and go in a regular (people's) pool, before you are asked to heat your own noodle soup for lunch (chicken and vegetarian option). You are also given some traditional cotton clothes. All in all, a nice way to spend half a day around CM, outside the city, with many photo opportunities, and a chance to be really close to some old elephants (you can even hug them). Everyone in the Sanctuary is hyper friendly, They seem to have addressed comments in earlier reviews that there was high pressure to buy pictures. They still have a photographer and you are given a chance to see pictures on which you appear (and which you can buy) but there was no pressure to buy. There are plenty of other outfits in CM that seem to offer the same or similar experiences, but some don't offer clothes, or a bath or lunch. All of these state explicitly you can NOT ride the elephants, which is a good development. All of these also cost somewhere between 1300 and 1800 THB per person. We paid 1500 THB pp. The whole thing is also very kid friendly. Make sure you wear your swim gear under your clothes.
Hello Vlaamse_Reiziger. Thank you for taking the time to leave your kind and informative review. We very much appreciate your support and the information helps other to make a well informed decision. We hope you left with memories to treasure. We wish you all the best for the future. Unique experience in a great sanctuary with amazing guides.
Probably one of the most outstanding highlights during our Thailand journey. I do not know, if there are different experiences, but there you go with our: We booked a half-day trip to the sanctuary and been skeptic as you pay relatively much in comparison to other tours and trips and especially in hope that the elephants will be treated well with that money. Our journey started at our hotel with a mini bus without A/C, but refreshing experience. Picked up two more visitors and headed straight towards the sanctuary. You received clothes, water and an introduction after arrival and then straight forward moved to the elephants. You have been able to feed, touch, pet and do almost everything you like. Mud pit and a bath within a water pit together with the elephants build the follow-up session, before you were able to cool down in the swimming pool and cook your own soup (yes, you were in charge of your own soup, which was quite nice). Afterwards you had the chance to buy the pictures, which have been made, but you were not forced to as you have been able to take as many pictures as you want to by yourself. Guides were awesome and very, very friendly. I can only recommend this sanctuary.
Hello. We are so glad that you enjoyed your experience with us. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely detailed review, this is so important to our future guests and helping them make a decision to support our elephants. We wish you all the best for the future. Maerim Elephant Sanctuary.

    Amazing
Amazing experience! Well run half day tour with Mek, who was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgable - such a great guide! You could really tell the elephants were well cared for and happy. We got to feed the elephants, go for a mud bath and swim with the elephants, then time for the swimming pool before cooking lunch! With a lot to fit in, it didn’t feel rushed at all. There is a photographer taking photos, and these came out so well! There was no pressure to buy photos, but you could buy your full album (about 150 photos) for 500 baht which was good value for the quality of the photos provided! All in all a great experience that I would recommend to everyone!!!

    Incredible experience
Amazing half day - we loved feeding, walking and bathing the elephants. Followed by a quick dip in the ‘humans’ pool and making a noodle soup together for lunch and viewing the photographers’ incredible photos of us which we could purchase and receive digitally immediately. Would highly recommend!

This Elephant Sanctuary is THE BEST!
Chose to go to this elephant sanctuary because not only is it affordable but it is also filled with a lot of activities with the elephants! The elephants are so well socialized and friendly! This was our second elephant sanctuary and it was amazing. We were hooked on the elephants. It is the most life changing thing I´ve done.
The elephants are huge, they look very happy and relaxed.
I liked that they let us touch them more, spend more time feeding them, and had more interaction with them.
In the other place we were kind of restrained from touching them.
They seem happy there and so do the people who care for them.
There is a pool to dip into after, that made it great since it was so hot.
We cooked a delicious thai noodle soup for lunch.
When I go back to Thailand I will return here.
Recommend 100%.

The best day ever! Mek was our guide and he was just fantastic! All the workers there were so helpful and good fun! The elephants are so well looked after and have the freedom to walk where they want. Feeding the elephants was the highlight for me, you prepare the food first and then go with bags full. There was also a photographer who came with us so at the end we got over 300 photos of our group of 4 and they were such good quality! Would recommend this to everyone, great trip!

I went by myself for a day at Maerim elephant sanctuary, and it couldn’t have been any better! There were only 3 of us on the day I went, so we got to spend extra time caring for, feeding and playing with the elephants…. They are so lovingly cared for by the family and friends that have given them a home, it was a total pleasure to be with them all and share their love of these fantastic creatures!
And the lunch, which we made according to their instructions, was delicious..:)
I highly recommend this place: you won’t regret it if you love elephants and don’t mind getting dirty with them!

This elephant sanctuary was amazing! We did the half day tour and are guides we’re awesome they shared many fun facts about elephants and how to be safe near them as well as how to keep them safe. They were also super funny! Part of the tour involved making a traditional Thai soup that tasted amazing. You had the opportunity to not only feed the elephants but also have a mud bath with them! A once and a lifetime experience I would say it was worth every penny!

The best thing we have done in Thailand, the staff are incredible, Tim our guide was amazing and everyone really cares for the elephants! You can see how close and attached and how loved these elephants are! You feed them, learn about them and elephant populations in Thailand, walk them over 10 acres of land, have a mud bath with them, cut down banana trees for them, wash them and even cook your own lunch which was incredible! Loved ever second of it! I hope to see the same staff and elephants here if we ever come back! Give Tim and raise, he spoke so passionately about the elephants there, he’s the best!!!

EPIC EXPERIENCE! I highly recommend! Probably my favourite experience in Thailand. Our guide “Kem” was so friendly, professional and knowledgeable. The sanctuary was not overcrowded (only 8 of us) with a total of 5 elephants roaming. We learned about where each elephant was rescued from, and the cost of rescuing elephants. We fed them bananas and corn, gave them a mud bath then washed them and swam with them.. it was EPIC! These gentle giants were so patient with us and displayed no signs of abuse or concerning aggressive behaviour. At the end we were taught how to make our own Tom Yum Soup which was DELICIOUS! On top of all that we had the opportunity to buy our photos - key if you didn’t bring your tripod or are solo (I had like 200 shots in my album!) so it’s insane value what you get here, I will definitely recommend this without hesitation.

This was a real treat . To h ave the opportunity to spend so much time with beautiful elephants and in a really small group . I didn’t feel rushed or that there were too many people.

The sanctuary was recommended to me by my hotel as being one of the more ethical choices. There is no riding and you got the impression that they all really loved the elephants and that they were well looked after.

We were also able to go into the mud bath with them and feed them and just hang out with them as they did their thing . The elephants were able to walk away to
another part of the sanctuary if they wanted to but they all seemed content to stay.

There were 5 elephants and 7 people in our group.i would thoroughly recommend this place and would go again.

The staff were really amazing and we learned to cook delicious noodle soup for supper.
