About
Here at Maerim Elephant Sanctuary our mission is to rescue miss-treated elephants and provide them with a beautiful environment where they are safe, loved and cared for. We are 100% against elephant riding, performances, tricks and any method of training or discipline where pain is inflicted to achieve a result. We believe that by sharing our passion with our guests we can all contribute towards providing rescued elephants a beautiful life which they deserve. In supporting our cause you will make memories to treasure as you roam freely with or magnificent elephants. Feed them, bond with them and bath with them. By choosing our sanctuary you will be actively contributing to saving the next gentle giant from a life of slavery. Let us assure you that we are not a money making outfit, we are here because of our passion for elephant. Along this journey you be informed of the realities of caring for elephants and the cruelties they endure before we rescue them.

Meet an elephant. Nice outing around Chiang Mai, for adults and for children.
You are brought to their site "upcountry" (40 minutes drive) and will meet 5 elephants. (the baby elephant was not available when we went). You can feed them with raw veggies. Then the elephants (and you) are walked to a mud pool where you can give them a "mud bath" (you go also in the mud - if you want), followed by a "water bath". Each "bath" takes about 10 minutes. Then you can shower and go in a regular (people's) pool, before you are asked to heat your own noodle soup for lunch (chicken and vegetarian option). You are also given some traditional cotton clothes. All in all, a nice way to spend half a day around CM, outside the city, with many photo opportunities, and a chance to be really close to some old elephants (you can even hug them). Everyone in the Sanctuary is hyper friendly, They seem to have addressed comments in earlier reviews that there was high pressure to buy pictures. They still have a photographer and you are given a chance to see pictures on which you appear (and which you can buy) but there was no pressure to buy. There are plenty of other outfits in CM that seem to offer the same or similar experiences, but some don't offer clothes, or a bath or lunch. All of these state explicitly you can NOT ride the elephants, which is a good development. All of these also cost somewhere between 1300 and 1800 THB per person. We paid 1500 THB pp. The whole thing is also very kid friendly. Make sure you wear your swim gear under your clothes.
Hello Vlaamse_Reiziger. Thank you for taking the time to leave your kind and informative review. We very much appreciate your support and the information helps other to make a well informed decision. We hope you left with memories to treasure. We wish you all the best for the future. Unique experience in a great sanctuary with amazing guides.
Probably one of the most outstanding highlights during our Thailand journey. I do not know, if there are different experiences, but there you go with our: We booked a half-day trip to the sanctuary and been skeptic as you pay relatively much in comparison to other tours and trips and especially in hope that the elephants will be treated well with that money. Our journey started at our hotel with a mini bus without A/C, but refreshing experience. Picked up two more visitors and headed straight towards the sanctuary. You received clothes, water and an introduction after arrival and then straight forward moved to the elephants. You have been able to feed, touch, pet and do almost everything you like. Mud pit and a bath within a water pit together with the elephants build the follow-up session, before you were able to cool down in the swimming pool and cook your own soup (yes, you were in charge of your own soup, which was quite nice). Afterwards you had the chance to buy the pictures, which have been made, but you were not forced to as you have been able to take as many pictures as you want to by yourself. Guides were awesome and very, very friendly. I can only recommend this sanctuary.
Hello. We are so glad that you enjoyed your experience with us. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely detailed review, this is so important to our future guests and helping them make a decision to support our elephants. We wish you all the best for the future. Maerim Elephant Sanctuary.

    Amazing
Amazing experience! Well run half day tour with Mek, who was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgable - such a great guide! You could really tell the elephants were well cared for and happy. We got to feed the elephants, go for a mud bath and swim with the elephants, then time for the swimming pool before cooking lunch! With a lot to fit in, it didn’t feel rushed at all. There is a photographer taking photos, and these came out so well! There was no pressure to buy photos, but you could buy your full album (about 150 photos) for 500 baht which was good value for the quality of the photos provided! All in all a great experience that I would recommend to everyone!!!
Hello Sarah. We are so grateful that you placed you trust in us. Your support is truly appreciated. And thank you also for taking the time to leave your kind reviews. We wish you all the best for the future. Maerim Elephant Sanctuary.

    Incredible experience
Amazing half day - we loved feeding, walking and bathing the elephants. Followed by a quick dip in the ‘humans’ pool and making a noodle soup together for lunch and viewing the photographers’ incredible photos of us which we could purchase and receive digitally immediately. Would highly recommend!

    AMAZING EXPERIENCE
We are a family of 5 and went to Thailand just to see the Elephants! Maerim staff made the experience the most memorable of our lives. The elephants are well taken care of and we were able to interact with them in their environment without disrupting routines or what elephants enjoy and need in their day to day lives. We will cherish this experience forever thanks to Maerim's mission.
Hi cgarod. We would like to thank you and your wonderful family for supporting our sanctuary. Your trust and support means the world to all of us. We wish you all the best and hope to welcome you again in the future. Maerim Elephant Sanctuary

After reading many forums about the best, most ethical elephant sanctuaries in the Chiang Mai area, I reserved the full day experience at the Maerim Elephant Sanctuary. I had personal reservations which were erased by the well planned, fun, interactive, thoughtful and informative day we spent with the staff and elephants. The pace of activities was perfect. Always something going on to engage all the participants, and time to fully enjoy each experience. We fed the elephants fruit, grass, and made our way to a near by banana plantation and each chopped down a tree to feed the elephants the tender core of the tree. We learned that it will re-grow and bear fruit in as little as 9 months! The mud bath and river swim were wonderful experiences and the traditional lunch was delicious. The photographer captured so many we wonderful moments and although I'd been trying, and took many of my own photos, I couldn't resist the photo package that was on offer for sale. It was fun to see the slideshows of each groups day after we had changed back into our clothes following a swim at their beautiful pool. The swim in the pool was a wonderful addition to this incredible experience. I have only praise for this excellent day with the gentle giants.

Thank you for your kind and wonderful review. It really is so heartwarming to hear reviews like yours. We know it can me difficult when picking a sanctuary without the trust there before hand. Thank you for trusting in Maerim Elephant Sanctuary. Did you know that the small fee for the optional professional photography service also goes back into supporting the elephants so it's a win win for all. All the best for the future.

We were recommended the Maerim Elephant Sanctuary by our hostel. We had done a lot of research into elephant sanctuaries before coming to Thailand as we wanted somewhere that was ethical and cared for the elephants well and I can confirm Maerim elephant sanctuary did not disappoint!
We did the full day tour. Dee our guide was fabulous, he was very funny and knowledgeable and it was clear he and his team care for the elephants greatly. We got to spend a lot of time with the elephants feeding, bathing and walking with them; we did not feel rushed at any point.
During the day there is also a professional photographer taking photos, and you are able to purchase these photos after for a very reasonable price and the money goes back into supporting the elephant sanctuary. The photographer is fabulous most of the time you aren’t even aware he is taking the photos. There are an abundance of elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai and I think it could be difficult to choose the right one therefore I would recommend Maerim elephant sanctuary to everyone, they are doing a wonderful job caring for these elephants. We truly had a 5 star experience and it was one of my favourite days of our holiday in Thailand!

The many 5 star reviews here for Maerim Elephant Sanctuary reflect how popular it is. The few negative reviews are certainly justifiable - and reflect that some people are looking for a more serious elephant experience.

Maerim Elephant Sanctuary is so much better than the elephant camps of 10 or 20 years ago, but it is mainly for an entertaining experience, which it provides. Most of the people on our trip were in their 20's and 30's and obviously enjoying the experience. My friends and I are retirees and we certainly enjoyed it too.

The staff seemed committed and provided plenty of support and information. The structure of the day was very good. Introduction, advice, meeting the elephants and offering them food. Mud bath with the elephants, washing them in another pool and finally washing yourselves. Then lunch and back home.

If you don't wish to do any of the activities, it's fine to stand aside and watch or take photographs

We enjoyed the unexpected surprise of cooking our own lunch, which turned out very well.

The journey from Chiang Mai city to Maerim Elephant Sanctuary is about 40 minutes each way.

A great, easy-going experience. Recommended.

Chiang Mai has a plethora of elephant parks, I thought I was being careful in choosing an ethical one. That day I had a great time - feeding, bathing and hanging out with the elephants plus enjoying the soup lunch. At the end of the day, if you buy their photos they charge 500 Baht. Back at my hotel I did more research after my friend saw the staff giving the elephants white pills at the beginning of our 2,000 Baht full day trip. Read about a former volunteer's experience working at Maerim, now I truly regret having spent my money and time with this organization. The staff try very hard to have you think they are being ethical but since tourism is changing and so many people have become aware that riding elephants is not acceptable any longer, they are shifting their standards slightly, which is the reason I'm giving them a 2 instead of a 0. From what I've read, the practices that we did are unethical.

Dear Paula J. We are sad that you left with negative feelings. We pride ourselves on been an ethical sanctuary and have always been strongly against any type of riding or animal abuse. We don't understand what you mean by our staff feeding pills to our elephants. The only person authorised to give medication to our elephants is the Doctor/ Vet who visits once a month. We are very open and we would of been happy to answer any questions at the sanctuary or direct messages before you wrote a potentially damaging review. As for the worker who apparently volunteered with us and has left a bad review, we would be interested to know where you read this to confirm if they actually volunteered with us at all. There are other sanctuaries with very similar names in the area and we have often been the victim of mistaken identity in the past which thankfully we were able to provide evidence that it was in fact not Maerim Elephant Sanctuary. In regards to the fee for the professional photographer, that money also goes back into supporting the elephants. We explain this at the start of every tour and all guests are more than welcome to use their own cameras. We never pressure anyone into buying this service, it is there to simply let you enjoy your experience without having to take photos. We really hope you can take into consideration what we have explained here and we really hope that we can install some confidence that you did make a great ethical choice whilst supporting an amazing cause. All the best from all at Maerim Elephant Sanctuary.

My girlfriend and I had an amazing experience at the Maerim Elephant Sanctuary. We were picked up and taken to the sanctuary by their own staff (Our wonderful hotel POR Therpae Gate staff booked directly with the sanctuary for us). We were greeted at the sanctuary by staff who were very friendly and spoke great English. We were given a change of clothes, and a briefing on the day. I would strongly suggest you bring a change of clothes, towel and a bathing suit to wear under the clothes the sanctuary give you (you're going to eventually be wet and muddy). Our first interaction with the elephants was when we had a chance to feed them. this was about 30-45 mins long. We then proceeded to the mud pool where we bathed in mud with the elephants, this was about 30 mins. We then proceeded to the river to clean the mud off ourselves, the elephants joined us as well and did the same. This was about 20 mins in the river with the elephants. this was at least an hour and a half with the elephants!

The great thing about Maerim is that they have their own professional photographer! so that means you don't need to bring your phone throughout this experience. You don't have to worry about risking your phone, they will save you from the trouble and worries and take pictures of you! Just make sure you let them know you're interested in having your picture taken or do as i did and just follow the photographer around. They took about 150 pictures of me for about (cant remember exactly) $30USD totally worth it for amazing quality pictures.

This was the highlight of my trip to Thailand back in March. I have worked in the animal industry for some time and so it was important to me that the animal interactions my family and I did have, were both educational and ethical.
The sanctuary was both! The staff are knowledgeable and caring, and the elephants are all well-cared for and treated with the respect they deserve.
It's clear by the way the guide talks about the elephants that they deeply care for them and respect them. You learn endlessly about their history, and get to know each elephant individually as they all have incredible personality!
You can bring all your cameras along with you too, but it's not really required as their photography gets some amazing shots! We didn't intend to add it at the end,, but we loved the pictures so much we had to!
Not to mention the homemade noodle soup we had after was SCRUMPTIOUS!
I couldn't recommend this sanctuary enough if you are wanting an experience of a lifetime in an ethical and peaceful environment (but be warned! may result in mud stained clothes eek!)

Due to negative reports of some elephant 'attractions ' we researched for ethical sanctuaries and chose Maerim. No riding, no chains, no hooks. A good 45 minute taxi journey from the old town area, Maerim is found at the end of a bumpy track. A well organised half day, Sun, our guide was really helpful. Following a short talk on Maerim and a heart breaking video of just how badly elephants are treated by illegal loggers, we met the six rescue elephants cared for at this 10 acre sanctuary. Having changed into clothes elephants relate to with food and kindness we filled bags with sugar cane, bananas and pumpkin. It's quite intimidating when an elephant approaches you for food but in no time you become fascinated by them and watch in awe as these gentle creatures chomp their way through kilos of food! We then had an informative talk followed by giving the elephants a mud bath followed by a rinse off in a pool. Just like the elephants tou don't have to participate! Finally just time to buy a drink, shower off the mud and change clothes before you make your own chicken or vegetable noodle soup! A great experience which I will never forget.

This sanctuary was phenomenal. The care they had for the elephants was unreal. They pretty much let the elephants do whatever they wanted. Of course there was guidance, so at one point we went to a lovely muddy area where the elephants could play or lie down in if they chose to. Luckily for us one of them did and she was playing with us! However the other elephants didn’t want to so they did there own thing. There was no pressure.
We also went in the water with the ones that wanted to. They clearly love the water because almost all of them were playing and spraying themselves.
We fed them so much fresh food too!

The part I also really enjoyed was when we left the elephants to it and the carers taught us about the creatures, their origin, their differences from African elephants, where these elephants were saved from and their plans to save others and so much more!
Truly educational. And one of the best days of my life so far.
Thank you for everything.

100% safe, good and supportive elephant sanctuary.
