About
Here at Maerim Elephant Sanctuary our mission is to rescue miss-treated elephants and provide them with a beautiful environment where they are safe, loved and cared for. We are 100% against elephant riding, performances, tricks and any method of training or discipline where pain is inflicted to achieve a result. We believe that by sharing our passion with our guests we can all contribute towards providing rescued elephants a beautiful life which they deserve. In supporting our cause you will make memories to treasure as you roam freely with or magnificent elephants. Feed them, bond with them and bath with them. By choosing our sanctuary you will be actively contributing to saving the next gentle giant from a life of slavery. Let us assure you that we are not a money making outfit, we are here because of our passion for elephant. Along this journey you be informed of the realities of caring for elephants and the cruelties they endure before we rescue them.

Great discovery of the elephants in the helpfull way
May 2020 • Family
We loved taking care of the elephants and learning about their needs, with the help of a funny guide who taught us the respectful way to approach those wonderful animals. We made contact with them through feeding and bathing. A very good photographer was there to take great pictures we could buy to help the sanctuary even more. My sisters and I were happy because we got good pictures of those moments with our mom. We hit two targets with one bullet. What else more could we wish ?

Afternoon visit
Oct 2020
We recently visited as a birthday treat for our 9 year old daughter. We were the only visitors, which gave us a very relaxed afternoon where we could interact with the elephants. Although we were very privileged to have a private tour, it was a reflection of the current restrictions on travel due to COVID, so it made me wonder where the money will come from to look after animals in sanctuaries like this as the restrictions show no sign of abating. On the day we were guided by Khun Dee - we were able to ask him questions and he gave us lots of information on the elephants. We learned a lot, and obviously it’s much easier to do that when there are no other visitors. I’d wondered why mahouts always seemed to be shouting at elephants, but it’s because elephants do not have great hearing. Similarly, when ‘petting’ the elephants, you are encouraged to be quite firm. They have thick skins so cannot feel a gentle stroke, and it also lets the elephant know you are there. It all makes sense when you think about it! Some people do not agree with sanctuaries, but they are elephants that have been rescued from logging, circuses etc... and would not survive back in the wild. I was a little apprehensive about joining them in their mud bath, but when the elephants had had enough they just wandered off and were not forced to ‘perform’. We enjoyed our afternoon with the elephants, and felt they appeared well cared for,

Go! You won't regret it.

I visited this elephant sanctuary with two friends during our time in Thailand. It was an amazing experience getting to interact with these gentle elephants up close. We never felt unsafe as there were many guides in the enclosure with us, making sure we didn't do anything to alarm or distress the elephants. We fed them, we bathed them, we hugged and rubbed them. It was unlike anything I've ever done before. We learned quite a lot and had the chance to make some unbelievable chicken noodle soup. I would recommend this visit to anyone who chooses Thailand as a vacation destination.

Amazing and educational experience - already planning to go back!
Mar 2020 • Family
This was the highlight of my trip to Thailand back in March. I have worked in the animal industry for some time and so it was important to me that the animal interactions my family and I did have, were both educational and ethical. The sanctuary was both! The staff are knowledgeable and caring, and the elephants are all well-cared for and treated with the respect they deserve. It's clear by the way the guide talks about the elephants that they deeply care for them and respect them. You learn endlessly about their history, and get to know each elephant individually as they all have incredible personality! You can bring all your cameras along with you too, but it's not really required as their photography gets some amazing shots! We didn't intend to add it at the end,, but we loved the pictures so much we had to! Not to mention the homemade noodle soup we had after was SCRUMPTIOUS! I couldn't recommend this sanctuary enough if you are wanting an experience of a lifetime in an ethical and peaceful environment (but be warned! may result in mud stained clothes eek!)

The best and only Elephant Sanctuary you should go to!
Jan 2020
This sanctuary was phenomenal. The care they had for the elephants was unreal. They pretty much let the elephants do whatever they wanted. Of course there was guidance, so at one point we went to a lovely muddy area where the elephants could play or lie down in if they chose to. Luckily for us one of them did and she was playing with us! However the other elephants didn’t want to so they did there own thing. There was no pressure. We also went in the water with the ones that wanted to. They clearly love the water because almost all of them were playing and spraying themselves. We fed them so much fresh food too! The part I also really enjoyed was when we left the elephants to it and the carers taught us about the creatures, their origin, their differences from African elephants, where these elephants were saved from and their plans to save others and so much more! Truly educational. And one of the best days of my life so far. Thank you for everything. 100% safe, good and supportive elephant sanctuary.

This is such an amazing elephant sanctuary, all the rescued elephants are well loved and looked after, the staff are so welcoming and friendly, it was probably one of the best days of my whole trip. Also all the money goes 100% to looking after the elephants. The best elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai!!

Fantastic Experience!
Feb 2020
One of the lasting experiences of my trip! A truest wonderful day out. Picked up bright and early from the hotel and driven in a small truck to the sanctuary (probably about an hour away). There were probably about 6 others. When we arrived we joined up 2 other groups. The staff were friendly and welcoming and fun. The structure of the day was well organised with time with the elephants broken up by informative talks and a really tasty traditional lunch. Photographs were taken throughout with the option to purchase these at the end of the day. Well worth it in my opinion. Overall a fantastic experience. Thank you to the team for a great day.
