I ended up on this tour because the people organising it didn’t put me on the correct one. Even though I did ask again before boarding the bus. Anyway, this cost more money than the tour I had booked. And I really don’t know what the payment is for. You basically sit in a van for hours and hours and look at a cave, which you have to pay more money for. It’s such an expensive trip for not much.
The last stop is very nice, but that’s it. The food place wasn’t good either.
The guide and the driver were great but I would not waste my money on this tour.

It was, of course, President Mikheil Saakashvili who came up with the brilliant idea of re-opening these caves and marketing them as Prometheus. He had a lot of these glitter projects to kick-start tourism in Georgia. Open again since 2011, visitors can visit 6 of the 22 halls, about 1,800m of the total 11km that make up all connected caves.
I found the caves mildly interesting (OK, so I am a spoiled traveler) and the visit hugely frustrating : after buying your ticket, you have to wait 20/30 minutes until they gather enough people to proceed. Once they have their required number (40 to 50) you snake SLOWLY down and up some 700 stairs, occasionally stopping for the guide to give an explanation in Georgian, then Russian, then English. It is just a painful experience.

There are many caves in Georgia, both open and non-open, as there is a large underground system in the region, but the Cave of Prometheus (Kumistavi) in the vicinity of Kutaisi is the largest in Georgia and the best equipped for tourists. However, only 6 rooms are available for inspection (the route length is 1,400 meters, the inspection time is 1 hour). They discovered the cave in the 80s of the 20th century, opened it to tourists in 2011, and since then it has been considered one of the most popular tourist destinations in Western Georgia. The name "Prometheus Cave" was coined by Mikheil Saakashvili and arose from an association with Amirani, a hero of Georgian mythology, analogous to Greek Prometheus, chained for his act and placed in a cave somewhere in the Caucasus.
The entrance to the cave is decorated in a fashionable modern style, for this purpose a reception was specially built, and at the entrance a wooden sculpture of dragonflies and a stele with signs of distances from the cave to the cities of the world were placed. The path to the cave itself begins with a staircase descent, the main path of the cave is laid 80 meters underground. Inside, however, you will find a winding path that will rise and fall. The stalactites and stalagmites of Prometheus Cave illuminate, and together resemble a mesmerizing stone tale. The impression is reinforced by the musical accompaniment created by composer Gia Canceli. The central stalagmite is considered the so-called "pearl", in fact a large white stone of perfectly round shape. Among the halls of the cave stands out the Hall of Love.
The cave is cool (+10 – +15 °C), so you should dress warmer. The acoustics of the cave are magnificent – the sounds sort of walk around the halls, echoing many times. You can leave the cave by the usual route, but for an additional fee it is possible to do so by boat on the underground river (5 minutes journey in absolute darkness). Either way, you come to a place where the group is picked up by a white locomotive and taken back to reception.
The place is very beautiful and worth visiting. So I really love the underworld and I have something to compare, this cave left the most vivid experience.

The place was beautiful and absolutely worth seeing. The management of the place however is quite terrible. First of all, the tour is mandatory. The woman giving our tour, had a very unclear voice and almost no one could hear her. Second of all, they take in so many people at once that you won’t really be able to take pictures or observe much of the place. Third, if you book a boat ride, you’ll have the wait about 45 minutes for the boat as they take in so much people, yet the boat Carries about 10 people or less. On top of that, the staff is rude and I haven’t experienced any rudeness in Georgia besides this. They don’t really give information and seem like the genuinely can’t be bothered.

I have been to many caves in the U.S. way better than this one. They take way too many people per tour (40+). Many people are not mobile enough to navigate the numerous stairs very well, and there are a lot! The cave is not at all interesting, and there is a TON of walking upstairs and downstairs. Each stop, you have to wait for the huge group of people to arrive so the guide can begin speaking. There is more walking up and down stairs between the 3 or 4 rooms than anything else. I believe it is 1420 meters long. For those of us in the U.S. that is 15 football fields, but going up and down many, many staircases & not seeing anything spectacular. The guide did give the tour in English, but since there were no other English speakers, it was hard to hear because people started talking.

Loved it. The caves are huge, stalagmites and stalactites are very different and beautiful, the lightening adds to the effect. And the sound of underground river just makes everything right. We abandon the organized tour very quickly and enjoyed exploring the place on our own

In Georgia people will say, we have it, so you should visit it. Well.. the cave was good, but not that good. I appreciated the chance to go, but the group size was nearly 100. Easy to get lost, cannot see the guide, but that is ok. But when it was time to explain something, there were only like five English speakers in a sea of Russian tourists that ask 1000s of questions leaving little time for the rest of us to understand the cave's history. The groups need to be better organized. But the cave itself is not bad. Worth a go.

I had the feeling that I had entered the underground kingdom of Hades. Stalagmites, stalactites, the sound of dripping water, underground rivers - beautiful! But, lots of people who delay traffic on a fairly narrow and sometimes slippery passage.
Admission costs GEL 25, no guide allowed. In the whole tour we heard from him only 3 phrases:
Carefully slippery.
Waiting for everyone.
One to the boat, one to the left.
It is not clear why it is needed. It cannot fully track all visitors, as a large number of narrow steps and passages do not allow this. If you're going to be with a child about 5 years old, then be prepared to hold him in your arms, because the child will be hard to pass in places.
The most enjoyed boating on the underground river! It is very exciting, though not much.

You have to go with a guided group through these caves which is a shame. The group we were in was too large, it took ages to walk from viewpoint to viewpoint. Also, the guide only said a few words when the group had stopped and it was in English but not understandable - the speaker system was no good and the guide wasn't clearly spoken. It's a shame because the caves are really spectacular.

We had planned to go on the optional boat ride through the caves but there wasn't enough water in the river when we were there.

We were there in September. it was hot outside. it was cool there. I collected things for all family members, it turned out to be not as cold as I expected. This is not our first time in the caves. closed shoes. no flip flops, no sandals.
Gorgeous place, enormous depth and height, many transitions. The groups are large and the guide can't handle it. After 20 minutes we realized that there was no point in running after the whole group, because if you are not in the top ten, then the chain stretches so far that by the time everyone arrives, the story at the location is already over. Of course, no one will overtake or push. everyone stretches in a chain, one at a time, for many meters. even when we were near the guide, the sound was poor and uninformative. It's better to take a walk yourself. don’t chase the group, take a photo and enjoy this amazing place.
You had to pay extra for the boat separately, but in fact the group was simply divided into those going out and those going to the boat.
There are places where there is high humidity and asthmatics should not go there. keep in mind.
the concept of "LASER SHOW" did not live up to my expectations) but it was beautiful, just the upper dome of the cave was illuminated in different colors. I marked “laser show” differently)
There is a bus from the entrance to the main gate, but we also walked for 5-7 minutes.
