Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Fabulous family home, grand but cosy with lots of history. Some amazing features and great art. Lovely grounds and gardens and yummy woodfired sandwiches from the cafe, would highly recommend a visit!

We have been visiting Burton Agnes Autumn fair every year for the last 10 years and love it here. Such a beautiful house and grounds and coming to the autumn fair is the perfect start to the autumn season. We missed the Morris dancers and the organ this year and were disappointed when the name was changed from the Michaelmas fair to the Autumn fair but still a lovely day out. The walled garden is beautiful, it’s a pity some of the garden produce isn’t available to buy. Already looking forward to next year .

Nice dog friendly attraction. Had a nice walk around the woods and gardens with the dogs. It was a very hot day, so the woods were a break from the heat and nice and cool. The gardens themselves were beautiful especially the walled gardens where they are growing lots of variety of flowers and vegetables. Dogs are only allowed in the garden areas and not inside the hall itself, so didn’t go inside. The woods has a disabled route, which cuts out the steps, but it’s pretty good underfoot for most parts. Inside the woods is several wooden carvings. By the cafe there are selection of flowers for you to purchase if you are interested, all grown locally on site. Cost was £10.50 per adult, shame there wasnt an OAP discount for my parents. Nice way to spend a leisurely afternoon.

Our first visit after taking out a joint annual membership.
We thoroughly enjoyed our walk around the garden and into the woodland to see the stunning carpet of snowdrops. We are looking forward to many walks round the grounds and visiting the house when it is open.
Dog friendly seating is available in the large marquee next to the cafe.
We had an excellent wood fired Diavola sandwich and thought it was reasonably priced for the quality of it.
Not really impressed with the coffee and extremely unimpressed by one other thing. The young lady who was making the coffees was wearing a black fleece with a logo of the hall embroidered in white. The fleece was filthy, it looked as though she had been gardening in it and the white embroidery was stained. Not a very good impression and I very much doubt that I will be spending any money at all in there in future. I am however happy with what I paid for our membership and as we are only a six minute drive away we will visit regularly and get value for money from the membership.

We have been here many times in the past but this was our first visit for a few years, and we were very disappointed to find you can no longer just use the cafe. You now have to pay £10.00 entrance fee for the garden, and only then you can use the cafe. I am sure this could be changed if they moved the payment desk to the garden gates.
We were not the only ones to leave without spending any money that day.

The decorations in the house looked beautiful. Surprising what you can do with bits and pieces from the garden. We were looking forward to having g something hot go eat in the cafe as it was such a old day. Theonly choice available was parsnip soup which we didn't fancy. We were too early for sandwiches so had to have cake. The Victoria sponge was very disappointing. I would say the worst I have ever tasted. Very heavy sponge and the butter icing tasted of cheap margarine. More jam might have disguised the taste, it was very sparce. Whoever is baking the cakes needs to improve their skills. Could have done with a larger cup of coffee to wash it down.

Any visitor arriving at Burton Agnes Hall, from the Elizabethan age to the present one, is bound to be impressed by this hall - it was designed to impress. Magnificent carvings, grand staircase and delightful plasterwork on the long gallery’s barrel ceiling. What surprised us is how modern it manages to look, with recent portraits mixed in with ones from centuries ago. the walled garden exceeded our expectations -it is delightful, well kept and beautifully planted. It looks its best in late May. Nice picnic area, good cafe, with lots of plants for sale. We really liked this place - it has a lovely feel to it.

A rare Elizabethan mansion in that it has hardly been altered in the intervening years. Owned by Simon Cunliffe Lister, brother of Mark, who owns Swinton Park Hotel near Masham.
Most of the house is not open to the public but all the principal rooms are. Highlights are, the Great Hall with its amazing wood and alabaster carved screens, the Red Drawing room, the massive oak staircase and the Long Gallery. The gardens with its vegetable “potager” are splendid as well. When we were there in August there were very few visitors. Wonderful for us but maybe less so for the owners!

Excellent value for money. What a place! Exquisite house, really interesting information and insight into life in the hall. Cafe and toilet area under redevelopment, plans look extremely exciting. Only had tea and scones but extremely nice. The garden was interesting, but weather conditions have played havoc with plants and flowers.

We went to see the Christmas decorations and we weren't disappointed!
They have 2 trails for the children, 1 in the house and 1 outside on the woodland walk which were fun for the adults too! Well worth a visit. The cafe has a lovely choice of stone baked sandwiches which were delicious.

What is the best route to take from Whitby? Google maps shows B roads but the last thing I want to do is find myself on single track roads which is where gmaps/sat nav seems to take me. Any recommendations?
Written 19 September 2018
If you want a relatively straight forward route via A roads then I would suggest taking the A171 to Scarborough. Go through Scarborough following signs for the A165 and taking the A165 to Bridlington, then take the A614 to Burton Agnes and follow the brown signs to the Hall.

Hello, can anyone suggest which is the best route to take on foot to the Hall from the main bus stop in Burton Agnes village. Many thanks.
Written 12 July 2018
Very simple walk up the hill, not too steep, you really can't miss it. Have fun.

Last time I went (Christmas) the bus wasn't in sight. I used to like that at Christmas - they used to have a Narnia scene inside or some other Christmassy story being read aloud but this year it wasn't there. Things are set out a bit differently now that they have got the new car park arrangement and there's a funnel system to guide you to the paying area so maybe there's no room for the bus anymore.

I don't recall ever seeing any mobility aids being provided by the Property.
It is possible to access large parts of the gardens with your own mobility aids. The walled garden has paved pathways and ramps. The hard gravel paths might be difficult to traverse in some wheelchairs and scooters. But even the woodland walk would be accessible but I would stick to the good weather.
The house is a different matter with stairs and carpets and rugs.

Are dogs allowed on the snowdrop walk please. and is there an entry fee to do the walk please?
Written 10 March 2017
Hi Yes dogs are allowed on leads and it's seven pounds per person The gift shop is expensive as is the cafe however the food there is 😋 😋 yum yum dogs not allowed in cafe but there is an enclosed building across the yard where you can eat The hall and grounds are worth a visit all year round and not just when something seasonal is happening. We prefer off weekends anyway hope you find my answer helpful and enjoy your visit

Not that I can remember. It's an old house so unlikely - although there may be a service lift installed out of sight somewhere.

I recall visiting Burton Agnes Hall in the early 2000s and I'm sure I remember a collection of guinea pigs near the cafe. Are they still a feature?
Written 27 February 2016
There were none to be seen when I visited in November.
Written 29 February 2016
I too don't recall seeing any dogs in the grounds and not being a dog owner myself wouldn't have thought too much about it. But I'm sure they would be allowed. Sorry I can't help further on that one.

Garden and grounds dog friendly but not the main house hope this helps
Written 28 October 2015
Hi there. There is a large staircase in the house which may be difficult. Parts of the gardens should be okay. Maybe it might be best for you to give them a ring - they all seemed a friendly lot!
