Bushey has a delightful museum and art gallery. We were pleasantly surprised when we visited that such a small place exhibits so well. The ground floor has exhibits about local places in the earlier part of the 20th century which is really interesting
Upstairs is the art gallery with its permanent and temporary exhibitions. There are some beautiful paintings . It is well worth a visit. Then have lunch on Bushey High Street. There is plenty of choice.

Thoroughly recommend a couple of hours at this museum in an influential suburban town of NW London - free entrance, donations welcomed. The local history downstairs is interesting in and of itself, but what marks this museum out is its significant gallery of paintings derived from the Herkomer school which was prominent for a few decades around the the turn of the last century. There are some very impactful oils. And for anyone with a love of horses and the book Black Beauty (Anna Sewell), then the gallery is a must-see visit because of the truly spectacular and emotional canvases of horses by Lucy Kemp-Welch.

One of the friendliest museum I have visited, run by a very enthusiastic group of volunteers.
Bushey's history is so well displayed, from the earliest of times with displays of archaeology, artefacts, documents and historical maps,
right up to the present day.
Don't miss the Herkomer and wonderful Lucy Kemp-Welch horse paintings in their impressive galleries.
This museum deserves the support of not only local people but anyone wishing to improve their knowledge of lost times.
Only open from Thursday - Sunday but with free admission, it should be on everyone's 'must do' list.

Although this museum is very small, that is the charm of the place, Very interesting photographs of past Bushey and lovely paintings. There is also a nice little gift shop. They have regular art exhibitions.

This building has quite a lot of space by comparison with most local museums. The displays are interesting up to a point, but the displays are very old-fashioned. More modern techniques would really bring the material to life. Admission is free and there’s free off street parking nearby.

Thank you for your review, albeit less positive than we would have liked! We take your point about some of our displays, we are a (very) local museum, with displays of local interest, so perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea. We hope you spent some time in the upstairs art galleries, where we have a wide range of displays, including the wonderful paintings of Lucy Kemp-Welch, horse painter par excellence. If you are reading this review, please come, and judge for yourself!

we had visited to see a temporary embroidery exhibition but also found the other parts of the museum interesting. There are pictures by a local female artist Kemp-Welch ; the house where she lived is on the main street and has a blue plaque. The painting are large and of horses; they are really good. She also did posters, one encouraging enlisting in the first world war - this is in the war exhibit. I found the museum very "personal" with small objects from every day life as well as a number of works of art. The gold cabinet is fun - -open it and look. to sum up: small but interesting for local history.

A superb local museum with a variety of interesting exhibitions. Currently featuring Masterworks by Emigré Artists from the Ben Uri Collection, which is fabulous. The museum has a lovely, small shop and the volunteer stewards are delightful and friendly.

The museum is located just under a mile away from Bushey railway station, just off the High Street in Rudolph Road.

There are numerous interesting local artefacts on display, including a cabinet of memorabilia from Wham, as George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley both attended the local Bushey Meads school.

There's also a room dedicated to Desert Island Discs, as its creator Roy Plomley thought up the idea whilst living in Bushey.

The art displayed on the upper floors is primarily influenced by Herbert von Herkomer, who established a local art school, and there is a selection of work by him and his pupils on show.

One of the highlights of the museum is the room dedicated to the art of Lucy Kemp-Welch. She created many paintings with horses as the subject matter and was the illustrator of Anna Sewell's Black Beauty.

Admission is free, but the museum is only open from Thursday until Sunday, between the hours of 1100-1600.
