Been a customer of the malt shovel for about 10 years and it has been through a lot of people running it. people come and go when they get to find out what a certain Mr Smith is like. He took the pool table out and wonders why takings are down(they had 2 pool teams) he wasn't happy that the... More

Lovely pub! Came here on a freezing Friday evening and loved the number of open fires here! Their two dogs Bailey and Teddy were a delight and Teddy played with ours relentlessly! We ordered starters and mains and for pub grub they were pretty darn delicious! Prices are incredibly reasonable and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Overall a... More

My wife and I stopped off here for a bite to eat on our way back from the moors. Even though it was a Tuesday night we were welcomed and when enquiring about food the kitchen was opened for us, and then followed reasonably priced gammon and pie meals along with a good pint of beer for me and a... We stopped off here for a bite to eat and a drink after visiting the Lovely Byland Abbey. Good home cooked food, no chain rubbish, we had the crumble for dessert, was grand. Kids menu is very reasonable too, simple and well priced. There's plenty of space in this 17th century pub with various rooms. Friendly landlord, a pub Labrador,... More

We had a lovely visit here last weekend, friendly and warm welcome by staff, great service and a top-notch (and highly recommended) home cooked Sunday roast. Will definitely visit again next time we are in the area!

Standardised Sam Smiths food menu which is always turned out well, but alas a little "little chefy". Good range of Sam Smiths ales. Bitter is currently £1.90 and lager just over £2.00 . All drinks acore full marks for clarity ,aroma taste and temperature. The new incumbents Andy and Lou have settled in well. The place is worth a visit.... More

completely unassuming from the roadside. Walk through the wonderful sagging side door and you are transported to the 1940/50s. All I can say is please don't ever let it change.

We walked to The Malt Shovel recently from a nearby campsite to be given a very warm welcome from the landlord Neil-he introduced us and our border terrier Jack to his two lovely collies and said to let him off the lead to play with his dogs 🐶we then sampled real beer and cheap at half the price! What a... More

What a proper pub should be. The landlord gave us a lovely warm welcome and the service was second to none. We sampled the pies which were delicious but Sunday lunch also looked very tempting. Although we only drank shandy, it was made with organic filtered lager which was amazing. And the most refreshing thing was no tv or music... More
