Enjoy the gardens, relax in the Kitchen Garden Cafe and visit the animals....

Enjoy the gardens, relax in the Kitchen Garden Cafe and visit the animals. The gardens are full of interesting features including colourful terraces and herbaceous borders, formal lawns, kitchen gardens, woodlands, meadows and ponds. There are impressive views too and you can buy some plants to take home with you. At the Kitchen Garden Cafe you can enjoy coffee, cakes, light lunches including pizzas and other hot food from the outdoor wood-fired oven. Homemade ice-creams and cordials are also on the menu. We grow and rear as much of our own produce as possible for Askham Hall Cafe and our pub and restaurant the George and Dragon in nearby Clfton. You can meet the animals too in our special animal viewing area - including rare-breed pigs, goats and shorthorn cattle and soon, free-range chickens and ducks. And children can also enjoy the outdoor play area.

I guess we must have visited on a down day. We are a party of four, and all live local. We arrived for a late lunch. The menu is limited, but the food looked ok so we ordered. We ordered soup for two and scones for two and coffees. So really nothing complicated. The cafe was quiet with only another... More

I stayed at Askham Hall for a family wedding. Our group had the hotel for the weekend and we held the wedding ceremony, dinner and party at the Hall. The setting is fantastic, the listed building and grounds are worth the visit in themselves. The local area is ideal for walking, with Lowther Castle a short walk away from the... More

The gardens paper guide is very much handmade but tells you all you need to know and the paths to follow; although after a while you find yourself making up your own... More

Just walked around the grounds and garden which were very pleasant and reasonably accessible apart from one steeper path. Signposting a bit vague at one point so ended up backtracking and nearly missing the vegetable garden. Tea room busy and appeared to be have a reasonable range of snacks and baking but we didn't try it. Staff friendly make sure... More

Overpriced Pretentious WiFi didnt work reliably in my room (it is 2016 for gods sake so whyyyyyy?) Some bloke asked me to unplug my laptop so he could put the light on for the Evening guests. What about the weekend guest that has to use the wifi in the communal area because it is unreliable in his room? Room small,... More

Hi there, We are sorry that you felt disappointed regarding your recent stay with us. We do apologise about the WIFI, ordinarily our WIFI is very reliable but unfortunately there seemed to be an issue with the booster near your room that day, which we have looked into and the problem is now sorted however, the WIFI was working throughout... Three of us had beef and ale stew today and it was awful - tough meat, loads of gristle. All three of us did not enjoy it at all: one of us could barely eat any of it. This was particularly disappointing as we have eaten there frequently. When we mentioned this to staff the response was that they were... More

All very orderly here, and things still flowering even in October. This is a boutique hotel, wedding venue, etc, but was the home (and maybe still is) of some of the Lowther family of Lowther Castle. Cafe upmarket, warm, loos clean. Lots of steps if you take certain paths.Lots of confetti on the terrace!

We called in for lunch after visiting lowther castle. The pulled pork sandwich was delicious the chips were to die for. Love the salad selections you can choose from too. The garden area is great for children as you can sit and eat and watch the children play.

The cafe was recommended by the hosts at New Ing Lodge in Shap. We drove along pretty back lanes to reach it , so that we could have lunch before heading off on our journey on the motorway.
