Very good if you have a cabin
Good trip if you have a cabin. The cabins are small but the privacy and the private bathroom compensate it. We made a round trip from Nova Scotia to Argentia and the 15 hours in the ferry when flying. Our ferry was the Atlantic Vision and has a buffet restaurant, an a la carte and a grab and go. The dinner buffet it’s 30 dollars per person and kids under 5 eat free. There’s a tiny playground with a slide a tv and 2 games.

    Smooth Sailing
First trip on the ferry to Newfoundland. If you are wanting a cabin..... book early!!! Took an overnight to Port Aux Basque with a cabin. Worth the money, nice to be able to have a shower relax with a bit of tv and have a nap. The bunks were comfortable, sheets, pillow and duvet were fine. You can get reclining chairs but there is no bedding supplied and it is subject to noise around you. The area is cool, bring a blanket and a pillow. If your doing this overnight trip don't arrive before 6pm. They load cars around 9:45 pm. Bring snacks and something to eat there are only vending machines in the terminal, it will cost you $5.00 for a candy bar, chips or soda. There is a Walmart, Dollar Store, Tim's near the terminal. You can leave your car and walk to Tim Hortons. There isn't much to occupy yourself in Sydney or North Sydney so don't arrive too early. The crossing was smooth. We didn't go upstairs for breakfast but opted for Tim Hortons just outside the terminal at Port Aux Basque. There is a snack bar, bar lounge, small gift shop. The room has a hair dryer, tv, shower soap, shampoo, towels and face cloth. There are pet friendly cabins, 2 bunk and 4 bunk rooms, kennel area or you can leave your pet in the vehicle. Once you leave the vehicle area and the ship leaves the dock you cannot return to the vehicle. They will wake you with an announcement 1 hour prior to docking. Fill the gas tank in North Sydney or before as gas is more expensive in the island.

    A classy way to Newfoundland
Impressed with how organized and on time everything was done. The boat was clean and very modern. The restaurant food was very good. Home style meals fresh and hot. Pricing was a little higher but to be expected. Great job by all members of their team.

    Great Experience
Everyone was friendly, even the passengers. We were on motorcycles so we were the first on and almost the first off. Tying down the motorcycles was my biggest anticipated challenge. However, it turned out to be no big deal. It is not a real hotel room but a very nice small cabin on a large ferry. We took it from Argentine, NL to North Sydney, NS. We were on the evening trip. We were in a cabin for two with two single beds. The cabin is small with a bathroom similar to an RV wet bath. It was large enough for the two of us for the one night. Only take what you really need into the cabin. It is too small for anything extra if there is more than one person. Be sure you have everything you need including meds as you cannot return to your vehicle. The room was equipped with 2 bath towels and 2 hand towels, no face towels. For a ship and a small cabin the lighting was adequate. We had a window. Only two 120v outlets rated for 1500 watts. I did not take my CPAP into the cabin and glad because of the limited space. If you take a CPAP take an extension cord. The shower curtain was too short so the entire bathroom floor got wet. Don't go in with only socks or they will be wet. The seas were rough but we really did not experience any issues and we slept well. The prices on the ship were reasonable. The buffet was a bargain in our opinion. Even the gift shop was reasonable, especially considering were we were. Beer was expensive.

    Safe crossing, decent service
My family did a return trip in June as rescheduled due to the issues with the Argentia route. Marine Atlantic is the only option to get on/off Newfoundland without flying. Customer service seems lacking. There aren’t many signs or staff helping you find the ferry or know what to expect when you check- in. On both sides, terminal staff seemed stressed and dedicated to ticketing. No store, canteen or cafe, or other visitor info. Bring your own entertainment and snacks for the wait. Our actual sailings went smoothly. Staff were on board to answer questions though not around much after we set sail. I witnessed some issues between passengers and wished there were pursers or security to intervene. Most people try to get a cabin and many who are waitlisted do end up with one. They are useful for having a secure ‘home base’ and if you want to lay down during the crossing. But a cabin isn’t necessary if you don’t need the space, dedicated washroom, or bed. There are several passenger areas with a restaurant and bar, other tables and chairs, and theatre-style recliner chairs. Rest, read a book, watch a downloaded show or movie, or play cards. There’s no wifi on board and limited food options, so plan ahead! Set expectations low and hope for smooth sailing!

Ferry Marine Atlantic Nova Scotia to Port-aux-Basques and back (the night sailing)
The room on this ship was excellent for a good night's sleep. It contained a shower in the bathroom, a blow dryer in the room, stool, mirror and small bedside table. On the way there, our room had no porthole but the bonus on the way back was that we happened to get a porthole so we could look out to sea. There is a step into the bathroom, so take care.

    Overall very enjoyable
Our first time taking the ferry to and from Newfoundland. Boarding was a bit slow on the PAB route, fine on Argentia route. Be prepared w/no plants, potatoes etc as you can’t cross with them. Cabins were good, especially on the new Ala’Suinu. Beds reasonably comfortable and the showers were great. Showers a bit tighter on the older boat (Blue Puttees and I assume Highlanders). I’d recommend bringing your own pillow if you have any neck/back issues as each single bed just gets one pillow and didn’t offer much support. Didn’t buy any food on the Port Aux Basques route, but on the Argentia route we went for dinner and breakfast at Sage restaurant. Both meals were excellent. The lobster chowder was especially good, and I enjoyed the nacho bowl breakfast (though would prefer real cheese over cheese sauce). Service was great all around, friendly staff. Boat was very stable for our PAB route, felt the waves more on Argentia. Ala’Suinu wifi was spotty and didn’t work much in our cabin. Would have liked more info on restaurant timings and more communication from the crew regarding estimated arrival times etc as we weren’t able to find this info very easily. Otherwise no complaints, a pleasant experience.

Ala’suinu needs improvements, more comfortable chairs
Took Blue Puttees to PAB, Ala’suinu back from Argentia. Smooth ride both ways but chairs in lounges weren’t very comfortable; need to recline farther and have longer leg rests. Ala’suinu needs improvements. Its lounge was freezing. Sliding doors make an annoying beeping sound whenever opened, which is throughout the trip. Bizarre system of buttons for opening, locking and closing restroom doors. Snack bar serves panini sandwiches … nice thought but with just one panini machine, lines are long and staff is overworked. A buffet would be better.

    Beautiful brandnew vessel
The Ala'suinu is a beautiful, brandnew ferry - am not too fond of long ferry crossings, but this trip from Argentia to North Sydney was quite agreeable. Book a cabin if possible. We heard from other passengers that cabins sell out quickly, so booking as early as possible seems advisable. The cabins were small but very comfortable and clean (great matresses and duvets!). There is one restaurant and one café, which isn't a lot for a ship of this size and there were long queues. We saw the queues early in the evening, gave up and came back at around 8, and people were still queuing. Food was nice though. You can even catch a glimpse of sunset if you are lucky enough to be seated at the front of the vessel. Very friendly, attentive staff. Speedy boarding procedures, too. Definitely a pleasant on-board experience.

A reasonable, though not special, ferry to Newfoundland
Took the North Sydney to Port aux Basques day ferry at the height of the summer season. As such it was very full so booking is essential. Boarding was slow and we were told to check in 2+ hours before, then it left 30 minutes late. (In my homeland of W Europe & the UK we're used to checking in 1 hour before and boarding 30-40 minutes later - and leaving on time). Once on board, it was comfortable but not special. Unfortunately, the kitchen's (galley's) A/C had broken so the only food to be had was at the cafe. They did their very best to serve everyone but it was a challenge. Since this was known from the day before, it would've been nice if they'd told us at check-in - we would have had more than enough time to get some provisions before boarding. A perfectly reasonable 6.5 hours crossing but they could've been more customer focused.

Absolutely disgusted at their policies!

Was supposed to take a trip from North Sydney to Argentia. About a 17 hour overnight trip.
When we booked we chose the option for 2 adults and one dog. Almost 2 months in advance there were no rooms available but had researched that in this case you would just sit in their seating for the trip.
We read the website to make sure dogs were allowed on the ferry, which they are, and the website even says they allow for support and service dogs. Which my dog is a support dog. (I have the proper documentation and even provided this documentation)
We were able to complete the booking without booking a room without issue.
Fast forward to the day of the trip, we went to check in and they tell me that unless we have a dog friendly room, my support animal, that is carried in a sac attached to my body, that performs a specific duty, is not allowed on the ship and would have to remain in the car for 17 hours+.
Not only am I appalled at this because you are trying to separate the owner from their support animal, but the idea of leaving your animal in the car that you as a human being is not allowed in, for 17 hours!? This is not okay. I’m furious.
We had to cancel our entire trip. Multiple cancellations of places under 24 hours costing us hundreds of dollars. The cancellation of the whale watching tour alone was $230.
The only positive thing about the experience was how nice the staff were at the port. They tried everything to get us onto that ferry but in the end they have to follow their policies even if they don’t make sense.

This goes above the front line staff.
The company allows you to book a spot on the ferry with a dog without accommodations even though you can’t bring your dog onto the ferry without accommodations.

Our trip was ruined. Our money was lost. And I am absolutely disgusted that any person would leave their pet in a car for 17 hours. I will never book this ferry in the future.

Well I one thing that should require immediate attention is the seating/resting chairs that cost 20.00 to reserve.
My sister and I were aboard the 11:45 pm ferry to cross the Berths were fully booked so it was recommended we have a reserved seat with leg rests.
We were unable to sleep in the chairs as it was impossible to stay in the chairs due to them being slippery. The foot rest stopped at mid calf area leaving our feet to dangle. Decided to sleep on the floor. To my surprise when I awoke at 5 am there were at least 25 people sleeping on the floor in our section alone.

Marine Atlantic is a booming business and surely they can do better. I called to voice a complaint that fell on deaf ears. I was told I was the first complaint😂. Hard to believe.

The ferry has good food and good value. They are aware of what is gluten free, however are extremely limited in what they offer. Basically pea soup (if that is the soup of the day), a vegetable stir fry and jello. Still the stirfry was excellent and my husband and brother in law were very happy with their burger and fish and chips although the fish was a little over done.

The cabin was good, bigger bathroom then Blue Puttees. Getting of and on was relativity smooth.

Food was disappointing. Option was a $30 per person buffet or limited snacks at the snack bar or Lounge a little later at night. When you have kid's they usually want a bugger or fish and chips, which is what was available on the Blue Puttees going to Port aux Basques. Breakfast buffet was $20/person and only average quality, frozen and canned fruit, eggs a little moist from the steam line.

Another disappointment was people were allowed to camp out/ sleep in the Lounge. I realize not everyone can get or afford a cabin, however this was not allowed on the other ferry and it made it hard to find a set to eat if you got something from the lounge or snack bar. People were sleeping by the windows sets taking up 3 or 4 spaces each. A family would take an section that could hold 8 to 10 people, set up there stuff and go travel around the boat.

The boat had board games available, which was great, but it took a while to find a seat/table due to all the sleepers and people camping our.

Overall it was a decent trip, just a little disappointing because I remember it being better years ago.

We booked a ferry ride in Dec 2023 for July 2024. We’re excited to visit Newfoundland for first time. Had pet friendly cabin both ways. Drove a week from Vancouver to get to North Sydney. In line up for 11:15 ferry by 7:30. Just as ferry should be boarding texted that it was cancelled due to mechanical issues. Informed via email with no consultation very late that evening after finding hotel room (with hundreds of others) that our replacement sailing would be just before 6pm next day to arrive at 1:30 am at Port aux Basques and no pet friendly cabin for us. Managed to successfully demand full refund in morning once service lines were open (I was worried as online conversations suggested I’d have difficulty getting past vouchers). We managed to successfully cancel 4 hotels being barely in the window to do that. I do feel bad for these businesses. No offer of discount etc on future try to make up at all for this mess. Why would I try this again and risk drive across Canada and this disappointment? Happily rebooked and spending more time in Halifax and Quebec City on this trip-but if you make plans to take this ferry my best advice is to have a solid plan B!

The boarding and unboarding process for the ferry is quite long. Once inside, we were very impressed with the modern decor and the overall cleanliness of the ferry. We had supper at the full-service restaurant and very much enjoyed the meal. They were running short of staff which explained the attentive but slow service. The cabin was small but completely adequate and would have been a great place for a night's stay except that unfortunately, our cabin was located directly above a set of doors leading to the deck of the ferry. Passengers kept allowing the doors to slam throughout the evening until about 11:30 PM. The loud banging then recommenced at about 5:30 AM. A sign on the doors requesting that they be closed gently at night would certainly have been helpful to our sleep!

This unfortunately is the only ferry service to newfoundland. I've been taking the ferry for years and it is increasingly getting worse. In July, they have the AC cranked which is fine if the temp doesn't dip. All cabin are sold out and if you want to pay an additional $40 for a foot stool added to a slightly reclined chair feel free too.(snorers/crying babies) It is wildly over priced. Our experience was not a good one. This is one of many not good ones. At around 5 am after all night with no sleep we went searching for a quieter spot so driver could get a couple minutes of sleep to continue the drive into pei. We went to sit in the bar area where there was already one other couple tucked away in a corner. When we made it to the area, a worker told us no. You can't sit here and kept saying they were closed. I asked the desk where I could go, explained what just happened. She shook her head and took us in to sit down by the bar. Maybe 10 minutes later, I just fell asleep and the lady who told us to leave started violently opening all the blinds and a bunch of people came in.
On return trip home, I'm sitting on the ferry. It's 715 am. No curtains are open and no one is sitting in the bar area eating breakfast. They are in the restaurant eating. So to the rude missus who works on the highlanders in restaurant who did this... you are hateful just to be hateful. It was totally uncalled for. Two photos from trip back. Last one with all the blinds open is from otw there. I also have a video of her whipping them open.

Took first ferry leg to Newfoundland, North Sydney to Argentia. Uneventful, well organized check in, traffic management onto and off the ferry. The Atlantic Vision is aged but cruises very well. A little rocking across the ocean but nothing too severe. Booked a pricey cabin which is highly recommended, 16 hours is a longtime to be just sitting around. Not sure where all those who had no cabin slept, but nice to get up in the morning refreshed. The cabins are very clean and comfortable. Onboard, there is a dinner buffet, snack bar for light meals and nice lounging area with live music and a bar.
