This is a village immersed in history, tragic at times. It is one of the two main villages of the Haida Nation, where survivors of the 19th century smallpox epidemics congregated. Today, it has a number of poles, shops and other attractions, but it is primarily a residential area, and visitors should respect this.

Interesting place with lots of heritage. Numerous totems even in front of homes. Cemetery area interesting from a distance but no photos and off limits to all but the locals. Very friendly community.

Skidegate located in Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) is a small town of 800 Haida and Canadian people that is the focal point of Haida activity on the island. It is worth a walk around and a visit to its neighborhoods, museum of Haida culture and port. There are limited restaurants and facilities, but hose that are there are... More

We were fortunate to get to visit Skidegate during Skidegate Days (their fair running from July 16-18). We got to enjoy bannock and smoked salmon, see Haida boat races (done by both locals and tourists), fish splitting competitions, log cutting demonstrations, a marathon, as well as numerous other things. Their hall is gorgeous and we got to enjoy the smoked... More

While strolling down the street next to the waterfront, we had a woman pull up along side and ask if we were too hot and needed a ride. We told her we were 'just strolling' so she pointed out a number of places to see (totems, galleries, eagle nest) and not to miss Skidegate days if we were in town... More

Skidegate is a waterfront Haida community that can best be enjoyed by parking the car and taking a nice, leisurely walk. You will pass by some Haida artist’s studios, the cemetery with its beautiful totems (unfortunately, no admittance allowed) and a mix of residences. This small community is located a few kilometres from the ferry terminal (offering service to Prince... More

The Haida Gwaii Museum is a gem. It's in a handsome building in a beautiful location, looking out directly on the channel between the two major islands of Haida Gwaii. The collection of Haida artifacts - masks, baskets, tools, clothing, argillite carvings, totem poles, and lots of good photographs - is extensive, well organized and attractively displayed. The large windows... More

Ferry from Prince Rupert arrives at approximately 7:00am so the Centre was closed. However, this was a great opportunity to take pictures of the totem poles and canoes outside without having to worry about bumping into people. On our way back from Masset we stopped for the full afternoon to enjoy the interior . Amazing amount of artifacts on display... More
