Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

Beautiful water - very clear and surprisingly warm. Not very safe to swim in - lots of rips. Gorgeous scenery. Sand is very warm in the sun, so take sensible footwear.

This is a visually interesting black sand beach in a cove between 2 rock formations. There is a strong caution about venturing to the water, but is well used by local surfers who I assume understand the risks for others there not much other than to admire the view. Apparently at dusk there is a chance of seeing the blue penguins (we didn't).

One of the COOLEST beaches I’ve ever been to. I believe it is currently inaccessible/dangerous to get to following slips due to the recent cyclone. The road there -weather aside- is a windy and gravelly with some of the most stunning views. Black sand beaches, the angry Tasman sea, spectacular rock formations and rich in Māori history. I was humbled by the force of the tides in the swimmable area between the flags. If you love the ocean and have faith in your swimming abilities, definitely go for a dip. To the left of Lion rock(?) following the shore out of view to the left there’s a cove with an awesome rock formation that makes the sea spray spectacularly through its crevices. Also, if you’re crossing the stream from the rougher side to the swimmable area, it is WAY deeper than it looks. I made it halfway across stubbed my toe on a rock I couldn’t see and fell in completely clothed. Either way, definitely worth the drive when the roads are cleared. 12/10

Lovely broad beach, plenty of parking, with interesting cliffs lion rock, and keyhole in the Rocks. Just always swim in the patrolled area.

A strange way to start a review, but another two people have just drowned at Piha Beach; please, please do not swim at this beach unless you are an incredibly strong swimmer used to dangerous rips and currents that will pull you out to sea from almost anywhere on this beach. Piha is a beautiful place, but extremely dangerous for most swimmers. I grew up swimming on lonely unpatrolled surf beaches in the Bay of Plenty and I would never swim at Piha, even between the flags.

If you are visiting Auckland and you want to swim in the sea, try the beaches on the east side (Waitemata Harbour), e.g. Milford Beach, Murrays Bay, or Takapuna that are safer.

But if you stay out of the water, there are many lovely walks and spectacular views at Piha, it is very scenic and a nice, if windy, drive.

Straight out of National Geographic stunning views and you can do a cheeky mountain climb as well as a nearby waterfall trail. Careful in the water through it’s extremely rough even on a calm day … swim between the flags!

Piha Beach and Lion Rock were definitely fun to explore and photograph. The black sands of Piha Beach are unique to NZ. Lion Rock is also great to climb and take some really amazing photographs of the surrounding landscape. Unfortunately, you can't go entirely to the top of Lion Rock as the trail is closed for safety reasons. It is STEEP with many stairs, but we watched families with children climb it without any problem. Just take your time and rest as needed. The views are worth it. We visited on an overcast and blustery day, but it was still beautiful. Don't let the weather deter you!
