As far as activities go it’s more of a passive type, with an excellent stately building, easily accessible, and extensive grounds to make for a fantastic picnic spot, dog walking or pleasant stroll taking in the views of Bristol, which you really feel far away from here.
For me, the highlight is the deer, they are magnificent, and very familiar with humans, despite having their own areas are also not afraid to venture into the rest of the estate and let you get close enough to really admire them.
Parking is also unbelievably cheap for a city location, and allows you to leave and return as many times as you like in one day, giving added flexibility to your day.
I can’t score it 5 stars as it’s not exactly remarkable, but as far as very low cost and rather pleasant days out go, it’s rather lovely here and worth visiting for locals and tourists alike.

Wanted to have a day out that wasn’t too far from home. We learnt a few new facts about the estate, the front of the house appears symmetrical but is not, there is a pet cemetery with head stones in the front and some of the myths of Bristol related to the statues. The roses were still blooming and fragrant and the red and fallow deer were easily seen. It’s a lovely walk around the estate and recommend, but the highlight was riding the miniature railway toward the rear of the golf courses. It’s seldom open, but it was thriving on this occasion and well worth the £1.50 for the ride!

I took grandchildren (2+7) to visit the park, £3 to park for 5 hours wow so cheap, the grounds around the mansion beautiful, lovely cafe, benches on the cobbles, children activity pack proved enjoyable with the children, finding leaves, cones etc. Plenty of room for picnic on the lawns of the mansion. Lovely to let the children run free and safe. Everything so expensive these days this is perfect.

Took us 20 minutes to walk around the small area lit up which was definitely not worth the £17 ticket price per person. Dangerous walking on makeshift paths as very muddy & slippery, not ideal for elderly or pushchairs/ wheelchairs. Very disappointing

Went to visit the estate and Cafe with my sister and 4 year old gc, too many dogs off their leads, a few jumped up at her, now she’s terrified of dogs. Also many cyclists going way too fast along the paths! Rude girl serving in the cafe! Told me to wait outside (as it’s one customer at a time), which I was doing, but a guy just waltz past me and went in, so I went in to say something , and she told me to wait outside!! Wtaf. RUDE

We often walk at charming Ashton Court and today we popped over to the golf club cafe to buy a coffee and ask for a cup of water. When I asked for water, the assistant initially ignored my request, then when I repeated it, pointed to the tap used by dog owners; I assume she meant to fill up a bottle.
I did not have a bottle on this occasion although I usually do so I politely asked for a cup. The assistant said she isn’t ‘allowed’ to give out cups of water but offered no explanation so I was forced to drink from the dog tap! Most unwelcoming.

I use the mtb trails once a week and often also use the golf hub cafe. Ashton court is absolutely fantastic with very good mtb trails and beautiful scenery, but I’m getting very tired of the miserable and often just plain rude man who seems to run the cafe. He’s without a doubt the most consistently miserable and unhelpful bloke I’ve ever met. You’re lucky if you get 2 words out of him and when you do it’s usually something negative. If he hates being there as much as it seems I think he should look elsewhere for work as he’s the last person on Earth I would employ to front my cafe. Everyone I know who uses the cafe has exactly the same view of him.

Large and pleasant grounds ideal for walking. Enter through the south gate as the car park there is much bigger. Entry to the estate is free and parking is only £1.20 for the whole day. There is a very nice courtyard coffee shop with snacks and public loos. The grounds are extensive and worthwhile for a nice long walk. lots of different trees and extensive grasslands. There is also a deer park, although entry is not permitted, with many deer.

The Cafe at Ashton Court has been a very nice experience today, a sunny Sunday in September 2020... I had an amazing iced coffee which was better than Costa coffee, and my friend had a coffe prepared as per a specific recipe, and nothing was too much trouble and the wish was granted on the spot...the coffee wizards of the Ashton Court Coffee shop are mother Sarah and son Elliott who, if you ask, will share some secrets on brewing a perfect coffee...I want to give them 5 golden stars because they make you feel welcomed and they do so with a genuine friendly smile!

Is it open to the public
Written 11 September 2024
Hello Theresa J.
The large park and gardens are open to the public. But the House itself is not.
It seems as though some community facilities are provided in the House for local families. But don't know the details.
There is a Cafe in the grounds.
Enjoy.

I am thinking of taking the family to watch the Balloon Festival in August. Is it uphill to walk in the Ashton Court Estate? Where is the best viewing point please? I would like to book a couple of rooms in a 4* hotel for a couple of nights to give us time to take a boat ride or the tourist bus ride. Can you recommend a couple please? Any replies will be much appreciated. Angelique9

Yes, the walk up to Ashton Court from Bedminster/Ashton is very steep. Just follow the crowds, past the mansion house over to the launch field. From Clifton or Long Ashton, the walk is flatter. Tripadvisor will suggest good hotels in the City Centre.

Is it ok to have a child’s birthday picnic party on the grounds? Possibly with a few subtle decorations like balloons and a banner?
Written 12 August 2018
Yes it is. We recently had a birthday with balloons and banners etc. It will be fine as long as you tidy up afterwards

Hi. Visiting for the balloon festival today is it possible and if so do you have any info on whether we can walk from the estate over the Clifton suspension bridge and back into Bristol this evening after the balloon glow.
Hubby and I live walking and would love to find a route from the estate back into town via the bridge - any advice very much appreciated.
Written 9 August 2018
Easy walk over the suspension bridge to the estate - no distance and probably the best idea as the traffic is normally heavy and parking a nightmare....I always walked there for the balloon fiesta, quicker than driving

As far as I understand the Suspension Bridge is shut after the Balloon Glow so you will not be able to walk back across it. I am afraid you will have to walk all the way round over the Cumberland Basin and that is quite a walk.
I do hope you enjoy the Balloon Fiesta it should be amazing this year with it being the 40th Year. Bristol is very lucky to have such a fantastic event.

Hi,
Yes you can walk from the estate over the bridge, which is approx a 15 min walk from the edge of the premises and then into Bristol but if you're looking to get back into the estate their website does say it closes at 21:15 throughout August so head back with plenty of time, especially if you're parking there all day!
Depending on what part of Bristol you're looking to walk to in the evening will differ in time a fair bit because of the city size. If you're looking to head down towards the harbourside it'll take around 30 minutes at an steady pace.
Hope you have a great weekend

Is there a mountain bike track at Ashton court
Written 5 May 2017
Better go to very nearby Leigh Woods - there are dedicated mountain bike tracks.

is there a pitch and putt course in or near ashton court

There is! We've got a pitch and play golf course up at the top - £6.75 per adult which is the biggest golf bargain in Bristol (we think).
Open 7am - dusk. Equipment available to hire, café serving drinks and snacks plus lovely views over Bristol and North Somerset.

Is it possible to visit the inside of Ashton Court other than for a function?
Written 24 July 2015
Sadly no visitors beyond the ground floor function areas.
Internally the mansion is in a rather poor state of disrepair since 1959 ota when the City Council took possession very little has been done with regard to restoration.
There are walkways through the upper floors, but these were installed largely for escape purposes.
In fairness, when it became public property the house had already been stripped and ransacked of any material value, this included the floors and roofs.
My view is why hasn't the Lottery Commission, English Heritage or National Trust stepped in to help?
In all probability I suspect a consortium hotel group will snap the place up for peanuts, with only the privileged able to enjoy the Mansion House!
Just a little point that may be of interest, we had our wedding reception there 33 years ago as did my brothers and sisters when they married and on each occasion it was quite special!
