Marvellous beer and fabulous cats, what more could you possibly want from life? Without a doubt the best pub in all the lands.

I was in the city to propose to my girlfriend up at the Clifton Suspension Bridge (SHE SAID YES!!!) And I had time to till before meeting friends to surprise her as they were going to take photos and film me proposing. As we have three cats named Woodie (named after Kingswood) Sallie (named after the Salvation Army shop in Kingswood as that’s where my father (recently passed) used to volunteer. Clifton (named after the Clifton Suspension Bridge) So my other half and partner in crime wanted to come have a drink and see the cats, all of which have the most amazing temperament. The staff are also kind, friendly and welcoming, the service was fab and the prices won’t break the bank either. If your a cat lover this is a must visit when in Bristol. Luckily the cats were all to big to fit into our bar or else I could see the girlfriend robbing one of these adorable felines to take home and join our family.

Been meaning to visit since moving to Bristol a year ago and was in the area so popped in for a quick pint with the missus. Immediately seeing a scathing notice about how useless the government are, next to a sign saying "no stupid bar crawls" I immediately liked the place before stepping inside! The place is cosy, but not cramped, with a nice old school pub vibe to it and a proper vinyl record player playing a wide selection of music. Enter the owner: walks in and immediately says the current song was boll0cks and grumbling about how it wasn't Hendrix's best work until being confronted by a mewing cat. Called them a greedy fat bastard while giving some treats and a head stroke leaving the cat purring away contently.....now I know this isn't what a lot of people are used to in a bar but me: I love it. Guy is a straight shooting, no bullsh1t up front kinda guy, none of that corporate brainwashed fake over the top pleasantries. The beer is great, proper cask ale, good selection to choose from and at a very good price (one review claims its premium.... £3-4 for a pint of good, well kept cask ale is not a premium price, in fact it's a damn good price) Whisky selection was also varied to suit most tastes with both scotch and bourbon. Upon seating we were instantly greeted by several cats looking for some attention and were content to just plong themselves on the spare chair for us to make a fuss of them. Clearly they're well looked after as they aren't shy and seemed incredibly relaxed around people. Some people say the place has a whiff of cat pee but with over a dozen cats one can expect a slight whiff, personally it's not actually overly noticeable. Negatives? Can't think of any. The venue is warm and cosy, the bar staff and owner are fantastic, the house rules are brilliant (Especially the Johnny Cash rule), good well kept beer and lots of inquisitive cats roaming around. Definitely worth going time and time again. I know I certainly will be.

If Wetherspoons is your thing, give the Bag of Nails a miss! We were lucky that our hotel was a five minute walk away, we visited early evening before our meal and enjoyed our visit so much we came for our nightcap All the beers we tried were well kept, cask or keg that will have a beer that you will like

We make a point of trying to visit as many different pubs as possible when we are away and the vast majority are instantly forgettable. The Bag O Nails is one we will remember and will revisit if we find ourselves Bristol way. The pub was busy on a Thursday night with a clientele that spanned all ages. The cats are what instantly grab your attention and they are beautiful cats that are obviously very happy living in a pub. The landlord was friendly and took us to the room upstairs as there were no spare chairs downstairs. Well, he could have taken me to heaven. Upstairs has a record deck and an amazing selection of vinyl and you get to choose what to play. We were soon joined by other people and we had a good hour of listening to each other’s selections and talking music. I only wish we had got there earlier. We only had time for James Brown, Michelle Shocked, the Specials and the Doors. Eclectic or what? I can’t say enough good things about the Bag O Nails. It also has fantastic beer at great prices. Loved the decor. A pub that will live in our memory.
