About
Discover the vibrant history of the past 300 years of Cambridge and Cambridgeshire life in a beautiful 17th century timber-framed building, the former White Horse Inn. Our objects relate to everyday lives, the customs and traditions of local people, places and events. Visit our nine themed rooms that explore a different aspect of how people have lived, worked and played since the 1660s in the city and county. Our museum celebrates the ordinary and eccentric: discover our weird and wonderful collections, from familiar household objects, paintings and toys to Fen folklore cures and remedies. Admire the crafts and skills of generations. Reminisce about our vacuum cleaners and televisions. Explore the fascinating stories of local people – find the Giant’s Boot, the prize belt of the long-distance champion of the world, witch bottles and the real Muffin Man! We’re a short walk from the city centre, through the medieval town on the River Cam and next to Kettle's Yard art gallery and house.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I enjoyed every moment of my visit to this rambling old house, from the transplanted shopfront in the courtyard, to the miss-spelled cross stitch samplers in the attic. Articles of daily life in years gone by was displayed in such a way that one could picture its use. I especially loved the kitchen and children's room. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. While I was there, the staff wheeled the doll's house to the work table and started with a miniature spring clean, chatting all the while. It is wonderful that this maintenance doesn't happen behind closed doors. Well worth a visit!

Some interesting objects but certainly doesn’t tell you the history of Cambridge and not very well organised. I wish them well, but needs more of a timeline, context and background with exhibits organised by industries or similar.

Absolutely fascinating museum - very many things to see, and I love all the kitchen and other household implements there. There is an ice cream maker dating back to the dawn of time, and some lovely kettles and also sewing machines!! I did not realise how old the building itself is, or how much of it there is - it is easy to get lost in there!! I am definitely going back for another visit. Well worth a visit, my new passion is museums. I am going to visit the Sir John Soane Museum in London soon.

We decided to visit the museum as some of the other attractions were not open as it was Monday. We are really pleased we did!
An interesting social meander though Cambridge’s history. Lots to explore and see, objects donated by the local populace over the years.
As I am interested in folklore, the exhibits about local superstitions and regional folklore were especially interesting to me.

I loved this museum. So many objects to look at and an amazing building too. It’s not big but has lots of interest. I would say there are not so many things for children to do but that wasn’t a problem for me. Toilet and small gift shop. No cafe, but plenty of places around. This tells the story of life in Cambridge in a way the bigger museums in town don’t. More people should give it a chance

Really enjoyed this social history museum. Not too much information and presented in an accessible way. Very friendly and welcoming lady on the welcome desk. Particularly enjoyed the room set up as the bar of the pub, it really felt like stepping back in time you could really imagine what it would have been like. Would definitely recommend.

Great little museum showing life in Cambridge past. David at the desk was a gem! So very knowledgeable! We enjoyed talking with him! Would actually have also enjoyed even more - a timeline history of Cambridge would be a great addition to the museum.

Sorry, can only say this was a bit of a disappointment. As previous reviewers have mentioned many many years ago this probably was an old coaching inn on a busy junction in Cambridge. Bad start - on the day we went the outside area at the back was closed as it appears there is some maintenance work going on. Also we then discovered that the top floor/attic was also off limits, no reason. So that leaves basically a few small rooms to walk around over 2 levels, one being an old kitchen, another being a children's play room. Lots of old random objects, but this isn’t really what I would call an informative museum - it tells you nothing about the History of Cambridge and surely that is what “The Museum of Cambridge” should do ? At £6 per adult for an an A4 sheet folded into a leaflet as a “guide”, this needs a thorough revamp, at the moment entrance should be Free. We were around the 2 floors and out in less than 30 minutes - maybe go when/if the building work has been finished, it might be better then, but don’t expect much for your £6 and you won’t be disappointed. Can’t see how anybody can review this as great, or even good - oh and just to be clear, as some previous reviewers have mentioned there is a cafe here, no there isn’t !!

The museum is free to enter, but you will need to book a time to enter or hope that they've got slots available when you walk up. The museum currently has a temporary exhibit for Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei, which includes some documentaries with a run time of about 1hr 45mins. I found the museum small but well curated and thought provoking, and worth a visit.
