Not easy to get down the backs while walking - you have to be prepared to keep going onto the main road at back as some of access private. But the absolute best views of the colleges so persist or book a punting tour.

I have lived in Cambridge most of my life and frequently I would swim, canoe, Punt and walk along the university backs. My best times have been around this area and that is why everyone who can should experience this wonderful place. Summertime is the best time to come but with a warm coat and a warm hat, the winter... More

I visited yesterday and was surprised by the beauty of all the colourful boats lined up. Great area for photography as the animals will come up close to you.

We approached the Backs from St Johns college and as the sun shone it was a lovely surprise on my first trip to Cambridge. Watch the punters punting, admire the gardens, envy the students, imagine the poets who were probably inspired there!

We chose to walk along The Backs, rather than go on a punt. We could see more of the college grounds from our level, than people on punts. We ended our walk at The Granta pub, well worth a visit!

Had a little time to view these well praised areas but failed to find the straight walk along the riverbank we were looking for. Some good views from bridges but even some of those like Kings College were only open to paying visitors. Best way to see the backs must be by paying for a punt.

Went to the back through a punting trip. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable ride. One of the most beautiful things to do in Cambridge.

By going behind the colleges one can conduct a beguiling walk along the Cam and see some of the most spectacular academic scenery in the world.

I'm not sure what can be added that hasn't already been said. Walk the backs of Cambridge and it's all free. It is a beautiful way to experience Cambridge and to take in both the peace and the thrill of being in this place.
