    Great atmosphere , great views
In the right weather with the band playing and an ice cream this is a superb area to sit or stroll . Plenty to see , including magnificent bridges and beautiful backdrops for photos . There is also the option to take a half hour river cruise which were very cheaply priced .

    Like being by the seaside
There’s not much in the way of touristy or food to do, however you can watch afew hours go by and enjoy the waterfowl and boats. You can hire a motorboat, peddlo or row boat, or ride on a bigger boat for a few. We spent hours here enjoying the serenity of it . A beautiful, clean, peaceful place. Practically everything you want!
The spectacular Weir, an ancient single track stone bridge, plus a wonderful Victorian suspension bridge too. The lovely Groves and the Roman City Walls are alongside. Wonderful cafes, ice cream parlours, and pubs cater for all tastes. Across the river, you can walk on the Meadows which is full of wildlife. Plus if you visit on a Wednesday afternoon or a Saturday morning you will likely see top-flight rowers (international and Olympic) out on the river training hard.

April 2021. We walked the approx 2 miles complete Roman City Wall and it passes the river, at the weir and Queens Park Bridge, Old Dee Bridge. If you come off at this point from the said city wall you have various amenities inc public toilets restaurants and concessionary stands adjacent to the river cruise piers. We then walked along the river passing under Grosvenor Bridge and around the racecourse. The river walk continues but we circled back, but a nice walk and views.

A very pleasent area to have a stroll and an ice cream, visit Hickories' restaurant, or simply watch theworld go by.. Enter the groves via the Roman garden and then go back into town via Grosvenor Park, or along the Chester Roman Walls. You won't be dissapointed.

We enjoyed this lovely cruise so much we repeated it - we made great use of the onboard bar serving chilled wine and beer and enjoyed seeing the city from the river and listening to the interesting commentary. A relaxing and peaceful way to spend an hour or so on a sunny afternoon in Chester. Highly recommended.

You will need to leave the city centre to the south by a few hundred yards to get the best of this lovely walk. We’ve been going to the city for years and had never done this before but will do it every time from now on.

It is beautifully maintained with bandstand, benches and lots more to see along the route. You can get boat rides there, hire bikes and there’s lots of places to get something to eat and drink.

The river itself is beautiful and you get some fabulous views to the amazing houses on the other side. There was a pub right at the very end as well which came in handy!

Over the years I have visited the banks of the Dee in Chester and decided to return once life opened up again. The seating areas under the trees are great for sitting with a snack from one of the outlets and people watching. There are river boats for excursions upstream, but they were a bit crowded for our taste and we were surprised they were not open topped. Instead we rented a small motor boat to do it ourselves. Not the easiest things to steer but good fun and a way to ogle the big houses lining the bank. When I was a kid it was £5 for an hour; now £25 for 25 minutes. Not so many swans now either, but some cormorants instead on the weir. There are also cafes and pubs, but we left over the footbridge and through a small park down to the historic road bridge and back to the walls. A pleasant way to break up sightseeing or shopping.

What a beautiful sight!
It is so lovely to walk alongside the river. Plenty of benches too to sit on while sipping a drink and admiring the views. Lots of cafes and restaurants too with a vibrant atmosphere.
We hired a pedalo for half an hour which was really pleasant - you can also take a ride on a larger boat or hire a rowing or motor boat.

A very picturesque walk alongside the River Dee is to start at Chester Bandstand on The Groves, cross the pedestrian suspension bridge over the River Dee and then walk along the Queens Park side of the river. It is a very quiet walk with hardly any vehicle traffic and with great views of the River Dee and all the boating activity taking place. Unfortunately, on this side there are very few places where you can sit and enjoy the view. However, if you remain on The Groves there are plenty of places to sit and there are also outlets where you can get food and drinks.
