Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Agree with other reviewers. As an artist I have done many art classes mainly in London and this was by far the best. A beautiful very well equipped studio, very friendly staff, great location and wonderful teaching. Will definitely be going back!

If you are looking for fabulous sea views, a quirky old fishing town, a week of creative fun and loads of learning, book a summer course in this art school. The teachers are laid back and share their knowledge readily, give awesome tips on technique and will offer you many different mediums to experiment with, each and every day. I left with loads of ideas for new projects and felt greatly improved. Even the morning walk to class and lunch breaks in the harbour are delightful. You make a cute portofolio to proudly take home and feel accomplished while having a great time!

As a life Model, working across the UK, I modelled for The School in November 2018.
This is the best studio that I have worked for, and I model for over 50 . With a fabulous Atelier atmosphere steeped in history, I cannot recommend it highly enough. The staff and tutors are consummate professionals and apart from being particularly friendly, warm and, well, just lovely, I was very impressed with the attention that they afford the artist/student. Gary and Liz are incredibly passionate about drawing/painting and their knowledge and experience, coupled with outstanding people skills will leave you wanting to come back again.

Thank you for taking the time to post this lovely review, it really means a lot to us and I will certainly pass on your comments to Gary and Liz too.

Visited for a 5 day course on landscape abstract art. Gentle tuition from Liz, got the impression she was very sensitive to the needs of the group; she was encouraging but also happy to let you find your own way. Loved the interior, a historic studio with lovely old wood and decades of paint marks on the benches. Thought quite small, felt airy with beautiful views over portmoer beach. Great thing about their courses is they supply all the materials. Great to try the artistic lifestyle out for a few days!

As a complete beginner with seven other accomplished artists, Hilary Jean Gibson looked after us really really well. A seasoned watercolorist and excellent teacher.

10am - 4.30 on Saturday and Sunday, inside and en plein air, working in monochrome Prussian blue to start with, we learned all about depth and tones, using salt, cling film, wipe off, wet and dry paper, washing out excess colour and layering that was a revelation.

By the end of the course my watercoloring skills had gone from toddler to teenager and I was inspired to greater things. My fellow students found it even more useful they said.

Marvellous position right on Portermeor beach, great light and atmosphere.

Artists' heaven.

Course £135 per head.

I was given the Mixed Media Landscape painting course for my birthday. Although I do a weekly art class, I was a little apprehensive. There were twelve other students in the class of varying ability, who were all friendly, as was the tutor Greg ( I cannot remember his surname) and other members of staff. The course was interesting and very different to my weekly lessons. Greg gave a history of his own artistic back ground and an explanation of what the course about. We were taken to the beach both days to sketch, after which we returned to the gallery to paint. The course certainly stretched me, but Greg was very informative and supportive and I learned a lot. The school is on three floors and the facilities are good there is also a lift, which makes it disability friendly. It was a great two days and l would recommend it to others, I certainly hope to return at some point.

I joined an Introduction to Watercolour course with a very open mind never having painted anything since school over 50 years ago. My fellow students were all nice people and tutor Hilary Jean Gibson took us through the basics to enable us to put brush to paper fairly early in the course - not as easy as it sounds as water has a mind of its own!
By the end of an enjoyable three days we had painted en plain aire and everyone had the confidence to go away and do it for themselves.
The studios themselves have a history and I would recommend anyone to "have a go".

What a great way to spend 3 days in St Ives. We did a watercolour beginners course with Hilary Jean Gibson, and learned so much in the time. We met some lovely people of all sorts of different abilities and covered a wide range of techniques and principles. We even managed some en plein air sketching at Porthgwidden beach and a group lunch at the Porthgwidden beach cafe. (Sumptuous fish pie by the way). The Painting School is very well resourced. We had great equipment, generous amounts of paint and paper in atmospheric and energising surroundings with lovely views of the ever changing seascapes of St Ives. Good disabled facilities, it even had a lift. I can't wait to book my next course.

An experience of a life-time - learning to paint more freely and creatively, in the fabulous rustic environment of the Verrocchio Art Centre in the lovely and friendly hill-top town. Liz is a relaxed but extremely well-prepared and very competent, encouraging teacher. The Verrochio Art Centre is well-organised, comfortable, spacious and the food and wine are fabulous and plentiful. All painting equipment and easels provided which is great when travelling from the antipodes. Great also to spend 9 days with like-minded people who mix and share experiences and learning.
