Powderham Castle is the family home of the 18th Earl & Countess of Devon. It was originally built by Sir Philip Courtenay in 1391 and despite undergoing many transformations since surviving the ravages of the civil war in the 17th century, it has remained in the same family. Entertaining guided tours bring the fascinating history to life, you will find them engaging whatever your age. Discover secret doors, stunning architecture and even a haunted landing. We would advise you to allow at least 3 hours for your visit so you can take time to explore the many acres of gardens and grounds. The Walled Garden is home to our friendly Powderham pets, including Tessa the tortoise and Harry the donkey, and is a safe haven for our little visitors. Relax in the peaceful surroundings, from the beautiful Rose Garden, overlooking the deer park and Exe estuary to the Woodland Garden, with its stunning collection of trees. For the keener walker the breathtaking views from the foot of the Belvedere tower are very rewarding - you can see for miles and feel on top of the world! Before you leave visit the Powderham Country Store. Here you will find Toby Buckland's wonderful plant shop, the Powderham General Trading Co with its range of gifts, clothes and home furnishings and a fantastic food hall, bakery and butcher.

Having visited the castle on various occasions, when my 3 children were a lot younger we had membership for the year, I still find lots of impressive bits that I've missed before. I used to take the children to the castles themed days in the school holidays these were just great, for adults too. We would nearly always finish off... More

We had a lovely afternoon making a Christmas Wreath. The tuition was excellent and we had an amazing amount of foliage from the grounds to use. Coffee and mince pies were served and the staff were so welcoming. The grounds were lovely with deer in the park by the lake. There is a shop and cafe too.

Went a few years ago, and been to lots of castles since and this is still the best for us. 1. It was reasonably priced for a family. 2. We had a knowledgeable tour guide (unlike some of the very expensive busy castles where you get an audio guide instead). 3. There is a haunted area! Mwa ha ha... 4.... More

Very very very expensive place to Go. Very rude parking attendants who treated us like dirt just because we had a dog, he didn't give us chance to walk somewhere without pounding on us and being very rude that we were wooing off in the wrong direction.

Have fun exploring the castle with all of its history and then make sure you pack a picnic lunch to sit on the grounds looking over beautiful countryside! A little cafe provides some refreshments (and nice scones) but not a great selection.

The castle tour is very informative and well worth it. There are walks around the castle and they also do music concerts which we've been too which were excellent. The restaurant is really good and the farm shop full of lovely unique and good quality foods.

Sounds odd ... but it is worth traveling to Powderham Castle simply to visit the farm store to find traditional. locally produced English food, e.g., breads, pasties, cheeses and different meats, including home -produced venison, of unusually high quality. Of course - it is there to be purchased to take home but why not stop for lunch? Excellent quality, good... More

We so look forward to listening to this recital however I feel that we were attending a rehursal of the players. No music was given any thought to what the audience would appreciate it was so off the wall that most of the audience were falling asleep. I took my 94 year old mother as a treat " What was... More

Thank you for taking the time to let us have your feedback on the recent Music in the Castle concert you attended. I am sorry it didn’t meet your expectations or those of your mother.
