    Wonderful
We visited on a wet March afternoon, 4 adults. The giraffe and elephant exhibition had me (at 68 years of age) wide eyed with wonder! Whilst not a fan of taxidermy, I just couldn't believe the size of the giraffe (never having been near a live one). The museum is extremely interesting and we spend a lovely afternoon viewing the exhibits (of particular interest, The Seaton hoard as it was found at the bottom of my uncle's garden in a field)! A great way to spend time, whatever age you are. Recommended!
Thank you for your wonderful review, we're so glad you enjoyed your visit (and what a great coincidence about the Seaton Hoard!) We hope you come back and visit RAMM again.

    Fantastic museum and free entry
We visited this museum on a showery Sunday morning and were extremely impressed with the quality and range of exhibits. Knocks socks off other provincial museums which charge an entry fee. If looking for something to do in Exeter, look no further, just go :)
Thanks for your review Yakyakyak36! We're delighted you had such a good time at RAMM - we agree, everyone should come and visit us! :)

Amazing collection of historical artefacts! The items were amazing to see so glad we went to see it! Shame the Roman wall wasn’t available to see due to maintenance but 100% worth going free admission too so be sure to buy a coffee or the odd fridge magnet
Thanks for your review, Luke. Delighted you had a good visit, thanks for your support.

    A Treasure Trove
The ground floor is concerned with Exeter's past ranging from the geological to the people's historical events. Upstairs is a treasure trove of artifacts from all over the world, a personal favourite was specimens dredged up by the HMS Challenger expedition in 1872-6. This contributed to scientific knowledge and was noted by the author Conan Doyle who based his leading charecter Prof. Challenger in his book 'The Lost World'. There are also many displays of clothing and goods from native peoples and taxidermy animals and birds.
Thanks for taking the time to leave such a lovely review, we're delighted you enjoyed the Challenger specimens!

    Must see, unmissable museum
Fantastic in every respect, I’m so glad we visited and would encourage everyone to go, so many amazing galleries. The natural history with the specimens and fossils was sublime, the collection of insects incredible, the art/history of the doomed Arctic exhibition in 1921 was fascinating, the geological timeline, prehistory and Roman galleries all excellent. We spent 3 hours and we’d love to go back. All the staff extremely helpful and friendly, excellent cafe and gift shop. Real highlight of our trip.
Hi Jessie. Thank you for coming to visit and for leaving such glowing feedback. 'Sublime', 'Fascinating' and 'Excellent' are the kind of responses we strive for, so it's great to hear we hit the mark! Best wishes, RAMM

Fascinating local history through the ancient to today.
Visited on Tuesday 17/01/23 as part of a day trip to Exeter. Here at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery listed as RAMM. It's a free museum and appears to focus on the history of the area in terms of its geology, ancient history, society, and industry, as well as the achievements of those sons and daughters from the area in the wider world. As an outsider, I still found it interesting and would be proud to have this facility in my area.
We're glad you enjoyed your recent visit. Thanks for the kind review!

Great museum - shame about the cafe!
We took our 6 year old grand-daughter and we all loved the museum. There are some bizarrely fascinating exhibits and I was delighted to see the collection of beetles from large down to something so tiny it looked like a grain of sand. Some good explanations of the attitude changes over the ages that helped answer a 5 year old's questions on such topics as why hunters shot giraffes and polar bears. 5 stars for that! Then there was the seriously awful experience at the cafe. We decided to have toasties. What we got were two slices of dry brown pre-sliced bread, lightly toasted on the outside with a slice of poor quality processed cheese inside and a slice of slightly sweaty cheap processed meat masquerading as ham. Possibly the worst 'toastie' I have ever had the misfortune to have had served to me. Our grand-daughter just wouldn't eat it so we had to buy her a later lunch elsewhere! Please, this wasn't cheap at more than £15 so you should be able to do much much better.
Hi, thank you for your review and I'm really sorry to hear you didn't have a great experience in the cafe. This sounds like an unfortunate one-off as we normally receive great feedback on the food. The cafe at RAMM is a franchise, so I will certainly pass your comments on to the cafe manager but if you would like to get in touch directly then please email us at ramm.enquiries@exeter.gov.uk, and we will forward your email on. Many thanks Nicki, RAMM

    Great museum for all ages.
Visit here annually and on leaving we always think “What a great museum”. Visited Saturday lunchtime with 2 grandchildren (8+5), meet by 2 v friendly young guides at the door who chatted to the girls and gave them some puzzle sheets, lots of interesting items to look at esp the Devon Hoard and insect displays. Kept the girls interested for a good 2 hours. Many thanks, we’ll be back
Thank you for your lovely feedback, so glad your grandchildren had a fun visit :)

    Excellent free museum
This is an excellent free museum and well worth a visit. The museum is within the city centre and particularly close to the Guildhall shopping centre and car park. Entry is free but donations welcomed. The main entrance is up some steps but there are alternative access points and lifts in the building. Worth checking before visiting. There is a good selection of permanent galleries with numerous artefacts of global importance, including Egypt and natural history. More importantly there is a decent area dedicated to Exeter and Devon and it’s story over millions of years. The static displays were supplemented by some interactive tools, most of which worked and there were a lot of links to online information via QR codes so you could find out more. There were guides around the museum but I felt it was geared towards the online option. To get the best experience I’d probably ask for advice at the start as to where to start. The cafe was nice enough for a quick break for tea and cakes and a pleasant environment to sit in and it also contains information on some of the positive community work that the museum is involved in. I’d recommend spending at least 2 hours to see everything in a decent level of detail.
Thanks for taking the time to leave us feedback, we're delighted you enjoyed your visit. Hope to welcome you back to RAMM again :)

Excellent museum not to be overlooked!
My husband and I work in museums in the U.S. So we know good museums when we see them. This is one. They have done a stellar job in reinterpreting their collection which includes everything from history, to art, to natural history. We particularly appreciated how they have interpreted their collection of items brought back from colonizing expeditions to places like Africa. Well done all around!

This is a gem of a Victorian museum with free entry which has a suprisingly extensive collection of artefacts and exhibits. Some are traditional while others are more interactive, mixing old and new styles effectively. I particularly enjoyed the early section exploring the geology of the South West and the Roman and medieval galleries. Friendly vibe, too, and a good cafe.

A very impressive Museum; we like to visit Museums and have been to a lot over the years; RAMM is top notch, immaculate, fabulous display cases, phenomenal prehistory section, geology, taxidermy; nicely varied in layout and the building itself is awesome; staff were very friendly and engaging.

The best museum I've been in for a long time. We ranged in age from 14 to 80, and were all delighted, intrigued and informed. Could have spent a lot longer there, and will certainly visit again when in Exeter.

We took our 3 grandchildren 7,4 & 3 along for a visit. It was our first time back for many years and we could see from the website how much they encourage young people to visit. Unfortunately the visit did not work as well as we had hoped. The children felt uncomfortable in the rooms with masks and the old stuffed animals. The interactive game in the stuffed birds area didn't seem to work. And it was generally hard to stop them wanting to leave. Our visit lasted about 45 minutes. Yes it was free and we can see that many people really like the museum which is great. But we were left wondering how could they make it more interesting for children. Perhaps more interactive things. Objects to touch or pick up - like the feather microscope which was working. For example they have an anderson shelter but you were not allowed into it. Would it not be good for kids to experience what it would be like to sit in it? Also I wonder if increasing numbers of young people will not like the stuffed animals, Yes they might have historical importance & value but I doubt they have much educational value any more.

Thank you for your feedback and for visiting RAMM. We do understand that the taxidermy displays can be uncomfortable for some visitors; many others find them an interesting record of past attitudes and approach to collecting. We hope your grandchildren were able to enjoy the children's area in World Cultures, the xylophone, interactive longhouse model and the dressing up area. We also offer beastie bags, and interactive trails, colouring cards etc. - if you were to visit again please do ask for these at reception. We will pass your feedback on and appreciate you taking the time to leave a review.
