About
For almost 600 years, Drake’s Island has provided protection for the city and port of Plymouth. Situated in Plymouth Sound just 600m from the famous Hoe, the island’s rich and varied history dates back centuries. Originally known as St Nicholas Island, it has been home to a chapel, a military barracks and an outward bound centre to name just a few. After 30 years of being closed off from the public, Drake’s Island is now open and available to everyone for guided tours and special events such as corporate functions, weddings, birthday parties and much more, cementing it’s place as a unique and intriguing tourist destination in Plymouth, Devon. Take the short ferry ride with one of our expert guides for a unique and informative experience and learn all about the history of the island, walk the tunnels, see the wildlife and view Plymouth from a whole new perspective.

    Drakes Island
Finally we got to visit Drakes Island and it was well worth it. We were in a small group of 12 and Dr Pete was very informative of the history of Drakes Island and gave an insight to the future plans to help conserve the buildings and island. His passion for learning more about the Island as more is slowly unearthed and discovered is shared as he guides you around. The short ferry trip from Plymouth Barbican also gives a lovely sea...nic view of Plymouth Hoe.

    Drakes Island Tour ❤
Chrissy and Suzy guided us through an informative and interesting tour of Drakes Island. It was such a good way to see the Island I've always wanted to explore. Highly recommend this tour, as one day soon the Island will be modernised and the opportunity to see it as it is will be lost. 10/10 experience and thanks again to Chrissy and Suzy for your care and getting your nerd on with all us lot listening. Thank you x

    Amazing On A Sunny Afternoon
We absolutely loved our visit to Drake's Island. Fortunately the sun was shining & we were able to enjoy being outdoors. The approximately 2.5 hour tour was fascinating throughout & our Guide, Chrissy, was superb. She was incredibly knowledgeable & engaging & did a great job of communicating with a large group of people. We learned a lot & her sense of humour certainly shone through! Drake's Island is an extraordinary place, and there was much more to see there than we'd realised and this tour certainly did it justice. From the ferry journey there in beautiful sunshine to the journey back in more beautiful sunshine, we had an amazing & informative experience. Great value for money & a wonderful way to spend a sunny lunchtime.

    Day out to Plymouth
Went to Plymouth on the Gold bus from Paignton, took 1hr and half, husband enjoyed it as can take in the views. Had good wander round Plymouth after coffee. Not that far from bus station/street to the hoe. Was extremely busy as graduation week and marquees covered most of the hoe. Nice to sit on grass or bench if empty and watch few boats on the water and Drake island. Nice to wander on the front to the Barbican where there are numerous eateries. Sat and had a snack at lunch at capt'n Jacks outside looking at marina. Wandered back into town and browsed few shops and Drake centre then bus back home. Enjoyable day to be gad in Plymouth but better if weather is nice like it was for us but plenty of shops if raining

Excellent trip organised by Drakes Island Tours and Special events.
I took my 5 year old niece on the Drakes Island Family Adventure day which was 4.5 hrs from boarding the boat to landing back at the Barbican landing platform. On arrival there was time for us to enjoy our picnic with free tea, coffee and soft drinks available before our tour of the island began. We both thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the scavenger hunt, the hosts were attentive and informative and ensured the children were engaged with stories as we walked through the underground tunnels. The lady who organised the scavenger hunt was brilliant, she was dressed up as a pirate and made sure she explained what the children had to do and encouraged them when they needed extra help with clues. There was even a prize for the best dressed pirate.Once the scavenger hunt and tour was complete we were free to explore the island and even have a quick dip from the small sandy beach before our return journey. The only negative thing was the joining instructions advised there would be a real Musketeer shooting drill on the day and there would be an opportunity to get up close and personal with the equipment unfortunately there wasn’t but this didn’t distract from us having a wonderful day.

Drake's Island tour - make a point to visit before any potential redevelopment
We had an amazing team away day tour of Drake's Island. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history and brought the place to life through stories along the way. A great tour and I would recommend a visit before any potential future development.

    Brilliant!!
I have visited the island twice now and loved it each time. Very fascinating and interesting place. I had the same tour guide twice (David) who was friendly, very knowledgeable of the island and kept the tour interesting throughout. If your into your history, the tour is highly recommended.

A definite must visit to Drake's Island
This is an absolute must trip to explore the historic island, whether you're a visitor to Plymouth, Devon or lived here all your life. The tour guide Chris was so incredibly knowledgeable and shared history of the island and what went on there over the centuries. He made it interesting and fun too. Such a great few hours all timed well with the boat across and back to the Barbican. Great value for money. Definitely recommend.

    Drakes Island a must do
Finally made a visit after being off limits for years. Did it as a package with boat from the Barbican and a guide on the island. Chris our guide was excellent giving us continuous information for around 3 hours. Good walking shoes and torch required. Basic toilet on island.

This is a great trip...if you're interested in the military. Or, more specifically, guns.

Our guide finished by saying that they had "only told us 5% of what they know about the island", but spent the entire few hours speaking about the guns on the island. I guess it makes sense given that 1) it was used as a military base and 2) the tour guide was previously an engineer in the military (if I remember rightly), but there is so much more to Drake's Island outside of this.

As a result, we were pretty much switched off after about 30 minutes as we saw where the tour was going and couldn't really get excited about more talk of the military. In fact, the first 30 / 40 minutes of the tour were spent standing still whilst the guide rambled on about the military and the bits we were going to see later, rather than just...taking us there.

All of the buildings on the island are closed and barricaded off, so it feels more like walking around somewhere you're not supposed to be rather than this grand tour of a historic relic. Because you can't go inside most of the buildings (there is one section where you walk through one of the buildings), the tour could've actually been much shorter and much lighter on the military propaganda.

The guide also spent quite a while taking about what the future of the island will be, rather than focussing on telling us what it represented in the past (outside of the military). It turns out that the island is going to be developed into a hotel and cafe type tourist attraction, which is a big shame. It felt a bit like "come back in 10 years when it will be better!"

The tour ended with us actually being locked on the island, as the bolt to the entrance door was jammed and the guide had to get a hammer to bash it open. This added about an extra 30 or 40 minutes onto the end, and we were all joking that maybe we were stuck there for the foreseeable.

Ultimately, the flashy drone video and descriptions on the website really isn't what we were given throughout the tour, and left feeling quite deflated. The wet weather probably didn't help.

Booked tickets as had a friend down visiting that needed entertaining - a brilliant experience.

Very surprised to read a rather disparaging post by another visitor as our experience and what said was totally different.

Guide was called Kathy who was friendly and open to questions. We were a small group so had lots of opportunities to take photos and take our time going around the island. The island has planning sorted it was good to see it at its outset. Kathy explained to the group that planning consent is locked for a long time with all building work being done slowly and sensitively due the buildings being listed taking around 5 to 10 years as the buildings are all listed although some work will begin over the next few years. Guns are very impressive as are the tunnels.

Would be good to have refreshments available so people can sit and look at the view.

Thank you very much for your kind words. You are absolutely right, the development plans for the island will take several years to come to fruition but in the meantime, we are just delighted to be able to share the history, the secrets and the future journey of Drake's Island with so many visitors. We would love to see you again in the future.

The tour was well led by the guide. You need to be aware that there are only 2 somewhat rudimentary compostible toilets on the island, and no catering, and few areas to sit down.

The island has a military history and as a young persons adventure center. The guide did very well to keep the tour going for 2 hours - very little of any significance has ever happened here. There are fine views of the Hoe and Tamar.

The tour would be best shortened to one hour on the island, and introduce some basic refreshments, even if it is just a tea urn and chilled water.

The current owner has had it since 2017, and with some basic funds, the island could demonstrate some love and care. Its in a forlorn state, and one really does wonder whether the plans for a hotel will ever be realised.

with limited funds, it could be loved, and have a cafe with a regular boat service.

We heard that Drakes Island was going to be opening up for visitors again and couldn't wait to book a ticket. We have spent many trips going to France on the ferry from Plymouth and had passed the Island many times and wondered what was on it. We were not disappointed. We were met at the Jetty by Bob the tour guide and historian, we were instructed on the Covid precautions and then our tour began. I wont spoil it but it was impressive. Bob was extremely knowledgeable and we could have listened to his stories for hours. I would recommend this trip for all history lovers.

Having for many years viewed Drakes Island from Plymouth, it was a experience to see it from the other side, and learn about the history and possible future of the island. The guide was a real font of knowledge and had a real interest in both the past and future of the island. I would recommend this tour to both tourist and locals many of whom will not realise the history in The Sound.

This has to be one of the best outings organised by Ringmore Historical Society. Our tour guide was a mine of information, interesting and laced with humour. The island has much to offer, and this can only increase as development plans come to fruition. The views from the island are magnificent, and the tunnels a highlight.

We had an absolutely awesome time on the island. This was a Xmas present that the missus bought me and I finally got round to booking it. We were lucky with the weather, a perfect Autumn day.

Bob the tour guide was great. He knew his stuff and was very engaging. We had such a great morning on the island, learning the history, walking around to see it for ourselves. I've lived in Plymouth for 38 years and this is the first time I've ever been over to the island. So glad that I did this tour. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone interested in military history and/or local history. Well worth it!

A great tour and history lesson of the island. The wardens made the tour very informative and an enjoyable journey around, pointing out great points of interest and places which would make a good photograph. The time just flew past and I could have spent longer just chatting about the island and its vast history and wildlife surrounding. I can't stress how much I appreciate the enthusiasm of the wardens and their knowledge of the island.
