Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Came at short notice a week before Christmas. We’d heard about it because we’d very recently seen the a writer/performer at the Poly in Falmouth.coaxed down here because it’s a lot cheaper than the Theatre Royal and has a relaxed offbeat feel even if the homely auditorium is showing its age and signs of wear. I had one of the un refurbished seats and felt the affect when I came to leave. The Plymuff Players have produced a jammer flavoured offering. There was enough to entertain and all was leavened by the occasional stumbling, the predictable panto set pieces and a procession of crude exchanges. Worth our time and effort. Will keep an eye on what else they have on the schedule here and will probably be back.

Slightly odd place with a lot of first timers and people you have never heard of but we have been to several very good things including music plays stand up and some idiosyncratic dance.

Came last night and had a whale of a time. £10 a head which we pre booked online. Not as big in the room by the small cabaret stage as in the much bigger theatre upstairs. Recommended.

We come here three or four times a year and also during the Jazz Festival. Some things are a bit amateur but the vast majority is quality and often challenging. Friendly relaxed environment.

Excellent theatre in prime location with a great, intimate atmosphere. There are always bands, plays and entertainment to see. This is also a great place to come for some Salsa dancing and cocktails on a Friday night.

Come hear maybe four times a year. Mixed bag of entertainment but usually very well done. Doesn't get much publicity but has a large justified following. If you have evenings to fill while in Plymouth, always check what's on here. The bar downstairs does better than average meals and has frequent cabaret and music on the very little stage there.

Never went there before last year, and I got tickets to see one production (the name escapes me). But the audience didn't realise we were part of the production as well, we ended up on a boat trip to the Royal William Yard as immigrants

Built into the old Seaman's Mission on steep Castle Street in Plymouth's Barbican, this out of the way venue is very close to the main drag but even many Plymothians do not know its there. Has survived for a bit over thirty yearsand we often wonder whether it's on the rocks only to be proved wrong because over and over again there is some lively fun or challenging event. Some of the new writers stuff can be a bit hit and miss, we went to a tortuous performance about a local bohemian artist, but we have seen good stuff. Comedy, jazz and some fall about off the wall events. Take a look at the website. If you like commercial theatre then you may feel uncomfortable at some of the earnest amateur front of house figures but we have found that it runs in an efficient friendly way with what look like a clutch of volunteer helpers. If you are looking for another live entertainment option in Plymouth then always check out the Barbican Theatre. Bear in mind that there are often performances by poets, comedians and small bands on the minuscule stage in the eccentric and now a bit dated B Bar on the ground floor nearest the entrance. That space also operates a tea shop/Thai box cafe which can be relaxing or fun but the food service has become disappointingly hit and miss lately.

Hi Erika,
Great question! At the moment, our age guidelines depend on the performances themselves - for example, our current Christmas show, Robin Hood & His Merry Men, is a family show, which means that any age can come along & watch. We would suggest, however, that any children aged below 14 should be accompanied by an adult.
Hope this helps!

Any news of apparent plans to move the performance space into the basement area under Jury's Inn at Bretonside.

Hi Jannerbloke,
We will be looking to move our Performance Training workshops into our new space at Bretonside in September 2016. Our current spaces will still be used, with many more great performances in our auditorium over the coming years!

Do they have any disabled access?
Written 23 June 2015
Hi Chas!
We do have disabled access within the theatre itself. Our entrance level lift has entry and exit points to all floors in our theatre, including access to the B-Bar on ground floor and auditorium on first floor.
We also have two disabled toilets available on both ground floor and first floor levels, as well as wheelchair space allocated within the seating area of the auditorium. To reserve these seats, we suggest booking in advance, though there are also more floor-level seats available.
Other disabled accessibility options that we provide include welcoming guide dogs into the building and an available induction loop system for those with hearing difficulties.
If you have any further access requirements for your visit, please feel free to contact our House Manager, Dan Baker, on 01752 267131 or by email on info@barbicantheatre. co. uk.
Hope this has helped!
