I am not a christian myself but do like cathedrals and made this my first stop on a day in Plymouth. The surrounding area is not very inviting and I did get some slightly unfriendly looks from a couple of worshippers so after a quick look around I went on my way.

Busier recently than a decade ago. Steady stream of migrant workers particularly Poles including families. Lot of locals too. Very pleasant feel to the services.

Surprised and a bit confused by the previous review. When the RC chose to reorder its churches for liturgical purposes it drew the congregation more closely to the action. One of the less uplifting spiritual filling stations in the city. Attracts a moderate crowd though. Many Eastern Europeans who often outpace the locals with a sense of determination and commitment as well as gregariousness.

Bit downbeat compared with our expectations. Some internal modernisation or re-ordering. Medium turnout on the Sunday morning we visited.

Built in the late 1850s as the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Plymouth and the seat of he only Bishop of Plymouth. This is a simple limestone structure with a narrow spire and occupies the higher ground in northern Stonehouse amidst some elegant and some run down early Victorian terraces. The interior was last repressed in the... More
