Bygones is three floors of pure nostalgia for ALL AGES! Whether it be History, Railwayana or Militaria, you will reminisce! Wander back in time, visit our authentic life-size Victorian Street, see the Blacksmith hard at work, smell the treats of the Sweetshop, listen to the hustle and bustle of Victorian life. Imagine yourself in the nursery, kitchen, parlour or even the dentist! As you meander up to the top floor, hop on the 27-ton steam engine en route! Arrive in the 20th Century, take a break in our Station Café for a range of cakes and refreshments. Marvel over our completely refurbished model railway themed around English villages in WWI and WWII. Consider your ancestors in a WWI trench or taking cover in a WWII Anderson Shelter. - Jemma B15 contributionsLovely friendly placeWe were looking for places that were dog-friendly and we found this little gem! The lady who greeted us was absolutely lovely and gave us information on the history of the building. The place was packed full of history and was very enjoyable. And the fact that we could bring our lovely large dog inside was great! We would definitely visit again in future to support such a wonderful place.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 October 2023

- Claire E14 contributionsReally worth a visitMet the owner very friendly and enthusiastic, we took our parents who greatly enjoyed it. I'm nearly 50 & recognised things & appreciated how things had improved for my generation. The cafe had a good choice of cakes and biscuits. The cafe staff were helpful and friendly too. The trenches was a experience and insightful, just wish that awful time had never happened!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 October 2023
- PhilipLeicLeicester, United Kingdom1,649 contributionsSo much to look atWe really enjoyed all aspects of our visit. There were 'rooms' of a house to visit first, then the shops in the recreated street, then the railway and war areas. We also used the on site cafe and gift shop which were authentic also. You really need time to examine all the many objects in each display to get the 'full' experience. The only negative we could come up with was, there was only one toilet, luckily we visited when the museum was almost empty. We parked on a nearby street so did not have to worry about car park charges. Would recommend a visit.Super, thanks so much for your positive review and we hope to see you again.Written 10 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 March 2024
- Ed G3 contributionsAuthentic, enlightening and educational. Congratulations and thanks to BygonesHighly recommended. Full of authentic Victorian content this place is a treasure trove of artefacts that feed the imagination. It isn't very difficult here to be enlightened to a bygone world, and what better way to contextualise today's world. Worth the entry fee twice over. Thanks for your positive review, we are delighted to hear you enjoyed it and found it value for money.Written 10 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 April 2024
- Lionel TPreston, United Kingdom154 contributionsPacked full of MemorabiliaThis is well worth a visit for old and young alike. For those of Senior years it presents with many memories of past products, tools, equipment and in some cases, life style. For some it will also still evoke memories of the war time era and perhaps for many more, a couple of decades after WW2. For the young, it is a learning opportunity in many respects to see products and past life style. Well done to the proprietors for providing such a comprehensive attraction. Many thanks for your visit, we are pleased to hear you enjoyed it and can recommend it to a range of ages!Written 10 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 April 2024

It’s not a very big place, but it’s stuffed full of interesting things which brought back lots of memories from the past. Very well laid out with a street of old shops and a full size train!! It’s family run, and the people were very pleasant. Also has a cafe and a little gift shop. There is a lot to see in the museum over 3 floors, especially enjoyed the Victorian street and war displays. We thought some of the display cabinets had a bit too much packed in them with little explanation, but still thought it was well worth the entrance fee as there is so much to see and enjoy. Good 1-2 hours experience, but if you don't enjoy history then this place is not for you. Would recommend a visit.

Thanks for your visit and pleased you enjoyed your trip to the past .The Shops and street /rooms are set without info boards so not to spoil the effect and are full as Victorian shops would be . The military displays as you will have noted have additional service and personnel Information attached

Me and my partner visited this gem on our weekend away to Torquay. It is £9.99 admission fee for adults each, was money well spent. Very interesting and quirky, full of amazing pieces of history. The staff were so kind and attentive, due to the COVID 19 pandemic they have devised a one way system that works really well and have alcohol gel dispensers. Would reccomend for all ages.

We visited here today after my husband spotted a sign for it, we all thoroughly enjoyed it including our 15 year old daughter.
It gives a real insight into how life was in those days. Reasonably priced as we spent about 1.5 hours looking at everything, the WW1 trench was haunting but great at the same time, (I love anything to do with the 2 world wars)
We had a coffee and cold drink in the little cafe before we hit the gift shop and picked up a few bits. The man and woman running it were lovely and very polite and helpful. Would 100% recommend and visit again if we ever venture down here again. Thank you.

We visited Bygones earlier this week and were amazed at all the place had to offer. If you’re into history, it is definitely worth a visit. They had loads of interesting pieces and the Victorian street was a really great way of presenting a museum.
I personally found the war section really fascinating, they have a model trench to walk through and medals from people who served in the war and their stories.
I would highly recommend visiting Bygones, the staff were really friendly and it has a really great atmosphere packed full of history. Thanks for a great afternoon.

Well worth the money. A fascinating collection of memorabilia. Invoked many memories . We'll laid out. Historically important. All those of an 'entitled' nature need to visit this museum, particularly the WW1 trench. And what's not to like seeing a steam engine housed in this small museum.

I originally visited here when I was a lot younger and still remembered it when I returned. Every single item in here is authentic, nothing is a copy. This is what makes Bygones so stand out to most museums. You can walk the streets and see what life used to be like. It was wonderful as always. My parents were reminiscing about the items they remembered from their youth that were in Bygones. The staff genuinely care about the attraction, local area and guests.

We used a 10% discount voucher from a South Devon leaflet guide for our visit to Bygones and enjoyed the experience overall. There were interesting displays and items to look at from various eras. Also a nice cafe and friendly staff. Quite a lot of steps so those who aren’t able-bodied might struggle. My Mum and I enjoyed exchanging £1 for several ‘old pennies’ and using these in old-style machine games! Would have been better if the inside of the museum was a little cooler and if there had been more than one toilet.

We visited Bygones at the end of August and were blown away by the content. The displays were absolutely fantastic and we really did feel part of history. I do agree with some of the reviews that the dolls were a little scary. I wouldn’t want to be stuck there overnight! However, if you can nip the fear in the bud, you really are looking at truly remarkable art. I do think they add character to the displays! If I had to make 2 recommendations for improvement they would be to perhaps make a shop in the Victorian street a gift shop or something as that would help the interaction factor a whole lot more. Also if the cafe was turned into a Victorian/war style cafe/restaurant selling more food and drink, I honestly believe it would improve Bygones massively. I would definitely recommend a visit though, the place is very thought through and well set up.

We do offer traditional sweets for sale in the sweet shop at use times .The cafe is operating under C19 restrictions but does have a railway theme and usually a much more varied menu .Pleased you enjoyed the overall experience

The cafe sold is yesterday's basic cheese sandwiches for £5 each before we shuffled round a collection of rooms stuffed full of a random selection of stuff apparently garnered from second hand shops. Very little information as to what it might have been like to live in those times. Because it was so cramped, we had to walk through very slowly and make our escape as soon as we can. I would have been disappointed if we had got in free, so paying to see this was a huge disappointment.

We are disappointed to hear you didn't enjoy your visit. We have displayed the genuine items that have been salvaged for over 35 years from antiques fairs, auctions and some donations authentically as they would have looked in shops at the time.

Yes! We are completely dog friendly in the whole building, even in our cafe where the staff will find a seat that conforms to our health and safety. We get lots of dogs in (of course free of charge!). Hope to see you and your dog (s) soon!

Hi, yes we recommend 1 hour to 1.5 hours but as you can see from all the other positive comments, many people spend longer as there is so much to see across the 3 floors!

Hi, there are about 8 stairs from the ground to 2nd level then 30 up to the top and 30 down however they aren't too steep. They are graduated and have hand rails. Unfortunately we cannot fit lifts in due to it being a 1920's building.
