About
Classic Norman motte and bailey castle, founded soon after the Conquest to overawe the Saxon town. A later shell-keep crowns its steep mound offering sweeping views across the rooftops to River Dart. Take a picnic under the shade of the ancient trees. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Fantastic Views from the Battlements
May 2021
An unusual small castle built on a very steep motte overlooking the town of Totnes. The walk up to the castle is steep, but well worth it for the views. The history and use of the castle were well explained by the English Heritage staff on site. Worth a visit if in the area

Family visit
Apr 2021 • Family
We visited the castle in the Easter holidays
It only took half an hour to walk around and up the castle and around the old moat area
We then walked into the town to a market
We only spent an hour in Totnes and went to Paignton instead afterwards

Incredible views and interesting history
Apr 2021 • Friends
Lucky to be the only people inside this afternoon and enjoyed looking around this castle with spectacular views all around. Well managed with new Covid restrictions and the member of staff who greeted us at 15:30 today was very polite, informative and helpful in talking us through the history. A very enjoyable hour spent wondering around this interesting castle.

Delightful informative private tour...
Oct 2020
Totnes and its grand Norman/Saxon castle, what a breath of fresh air.
We parked in the pay and display close by, a short walk and ready for our pre-booked 10am slot on Tuesday.
We were accompanied by the most delightful young woman, who not only was employed by the English Heritage but had a very knowledgeable historic background in English history and such a passion for the middle ages and Totnes Castle itself.
Very interesting tour, a chance to explore the upper castle battlements and take in those amazing views of the beautiful town of Totnes and beyond.
An hour spent here, lots of photo opportunity, walking the complete site but an historical encounter created by a lady who is a true credit to the English Heritage.
Small shop on site, and the very affordable guidebook is a must purchase.

Yes it’s a very small with not much to see but the guide was very helpful and informative about the castle. Probably not worth going back to but def should see it on your way through.

Well worth the Hour
Sep 2020
A small castle with pre-booked guided tour, the host kindly waited for our slightly late arrival as we hadn't reckoned with the Devon farmers. Our apology to the other guests. A very informative tour by a young lady who really knew her history and was very well informed reagrding both history, the family connections and the area. The tour took us to the top of the walls and around the moat and was well informed and instructed throughout

Looks deceive
Sep 2020
A bit disappointing with the exception of the views from the top. Nothing inside the castle keep. Walls can be walked around to see the views which are the best bit. Guided tour was very informative but not being able to go round yourself was frustrating. As was waiting for the booked time of your tour and then for longer as people couldn't turn up on time and ready for the timed tour.

Extremely Disappointing
May 2019
What a disappointment – the place was so bland and boring, I reckon we might have lasted maybe ten minutes all up and that included climbing up all the stairs to get to the top of the keep.
There was little left to see here, the information boards weren't very impressive, and we left wishing we hadn't gone in the first place.
