Classic Norman motte and bailey castle, founded soon after the Conquest to overawe the Saxon town. A later shell-keep crowns its steep mound offering sweeping views across the rooftops to River Dart. Take a picnic under the shade of the ancient trees. Child friendly and dog friendly.

There is not a huge amount to see but the castle and grounds are well maintained. The gentleman that took my money in the kiosk was very friendly and helpful. I spent more time looking at the great views afforded from the top of the...More

Wouldn't be worth the visit unless you're a member. Not a lot to see. The best part of the visit was the township of Totnes itself. Quaint township with lots of shops and cafes along a beautiful st4reet.

If you're in Totnes and have an English Heritage card, it's worth a look but if you have to pay you might be disappointed. The views are great but our visit probably only lasted 10-15 minutes. If you take a picnic you could spend more...More

This castle is rather small - not much more than a double wall on the top of a motte. On the other hand it is old and I think there are not too many castles of this type preserved in such good condition. The personnel...More

Cute town with shops surrounding castle on a high man-made mound. Great views from the top. Castle is just the outer wall with two levels. Parking is a few blocks away in a public lot. This is an English Heritage site.

Although this is in the highest point of Totnes, it is not easy to find, although not far from the mail street. The signage is awful. Sadly, once you do find it, all that is left is the central keep and outer wall. These are...More

Luckily the four of us chose a nice sunny day to visit Totnes Castle which dominates the lovely town (although worth exploring, beneath it. Views over Totnes are most interesting providing you are fit enough to climb up to the top of its walls (many...More
