About
Totnes Museum is now open for 2024 on Fridays only at the moment until we have more volunteers. You can still discover the history of the town from its Saxon origins to its current identity as a unique rural town flavoured with a Bohemian culture developed throughout the 20th century. Walk through a restored 16th century Elizabethan House and Garden to experience architecture and life from the building's first 100 years with our Tudor kitchen and living spaces. Learn about Charles Babbage's Totnes origins and his legacy in creating the early age of Computing including examples of parts of his Difference Engine. We hope to have new exhibitions of things to see while our archive service can cater for those seeking to find out more about the history of Totnes and the people who have made it their home for over 1000 years.

A Tardis of a Museum! Brilliant.
We had time to spare so went to the Museum. To be honest, our expectations were minimal. Oh my goodness! We were so impressed. The guy at the door was brilliant and very knowledgable. We also bought their honey. Very good too. Do not miss out on this treat.

A well worth while visit - and not just on a rainy day!
It was raining steadily, so I was pleased to get out of the rain. The museum is in a wonderful Elizabethan house on Fore Street and I was initially more interested in seeing the architecture of the house. It is a wonderful hotch potch of artefacts and I was soon engrossed by the old kitchen at the back of the museum as well as the display of weights and measures. There are lots of informative boards covering the history of Totnes. The Charles Babbage room could easily take a half day as there is so much information about him and his incredible inventions. So definitely a worth while visit not just to get out of the rain! Entry is free, so please leave a donation.

    Give Totness Museum a Try
A lovely museum half way up Fore Street, the main street in Totnes, on the left. It shows artefacts from 5,000 years of the town's history, all exhibited in interesting ways, with, for instance, Stone Age arrow heads mounted on wooden arrow shafts, as they would have been used. My favourites were the Tudor Kitchen and the Lee Ring.

An important place to visit - both for its quirkiness and unusual character, and for what you can learn about the history of Totnes from dropping in there. The museum consists of a variety of rooms (on several different levels) each telling the visitor something about the town and it inhabitants. There's an abundance of historical relics, many of them household objects, but also rooms dedicated to famous residents. Easy to miss as you walk up fore street and not the most welcoming of entrances

Wonderful quirky place that combines computing and medieval displays! An old fashioned local museum, but well worth a visit.

Tucked away on Totnes High Street; bigger inside than seems from the outside; full of fascinating history looked after by a knowledgeable volunteer.

Thanks very much for taking the time to give us a positive review. We are glad you found more than you had expected and understand this is a common response as front the entrance means few realise how far back and how many floors the museum contains. I passed on your comment to our volunteers who are grateful and always enjoy chatting with any visitors to share their own knowledge and experiences of the area. Thanks and Regards Museum Manager

What a wonderful treasure trove of times past. Wide array of antiques and displays. Very atmospheric. All well presented. Not all of the museum was open when I visited which is a shame. Creaky floors and original furniture added to the atmosphere.

Thank you Lois for taking the time to give us a review. We pride ourselves on our creaky floors so glad you enjoyed them and we hope you will have an opportunity to return when the last 2 rooms currently closed can be reopened to take us back up to 14 exhibition rooms in total next year. Thanks and Regards Museum Manager

Thank you Andrea for taking the time to leave us a review. Glad you enjoyed your visit and would hope you can return when we are able to have re-opened more of the museum. From July 28th we were able the upper floors meaning that now only a small part of the museum remains inaccessible to visitors as ongoing restoration work is undertaken. Thanks and Regards
