I had been meaning to re-visit some 40+ years after my previous time and hastened to do so to see the exhibition of railway posters. Very pleased I went. I found much that had changed, and much that had not. The temporary display of railway posters was excellent, although the room was really chilly. The archaeology gallery was quite superb... More

Well worth seeing, especially with other exhibitions such as the current display of nostalgic railway posters. From the Jurassic coast to famous people from the area , there is always something else to see round the next corner at this museum. Staff were helpful and knowledgeable. Everything is well laid out and informatively presented. You can almost imagine Hardy sitting... More

A very varied range of exhibits and my wife particularly enjoyed the Roman/Archeology ones (so did I). At time of visit there was an exhibition of Railway Posters as well. I think this continues until January

Have visited here several times over the years and still enjoy it. A bit expensive to get in at £5.90 for pensioners but once you're inside there's lots to see. I visited mainly for the Speed to the West Exhibition of railway posters and artifacts but of course I still had to go through the rest of the museum. Was... More

A very interesting and informative museum. There is lots to see including the geology and pre-history sections as well as the exhibitions on Thomas Hardy and William Bates. The exhibits on the ground floor could be better labelled though and this particular area appears a bit dated but once you get upstairs, the historical, geological and literary exhibitions are very... Visted Dorset County Museum while taking a short break in Dorset and it was well worth the admission fee. The special display of railway posters was excellent as were the exhibits of local history. Those people who rated it poor are obviously people who shouldn't never ever visit museums.......

In general a run of the mill town museum (fossils, farm implements) but it's worth a visit for the Hardy exhibition. There's a full mock up of his study with many of the original pieces and manuscripts etc and a well set out narrative.

So many different things in this museum... really brings the history alive with the new rooms on early history, Romans, the massacre of viking invaders...and more recent history with Thomas Hardy's study recreated here. Interactive, film footage, lovely architecture and a cafe with delicious cheese scones and Dorset tea. Art Fund members go free. I could have spent a lot... More
