Had the nearby County Museum not been closed for redevelopment we'd probably have gone there and would have missed out on this gem of a museum. Very informative and easy to follow interpretation of the Georgian courthouse and the cells beneath. Fascinating stories, including the Tolpuddle Martyrs who were held and tried in the building. It was very thought provoking - we are so lucky to have today's justice system compared to what they experienced. The volunteers were very frlendly and welcoming and seemed very well trained in the Covid arrangements so we felt safe and comfortable.

What a lovely cafe! We visited Dorchester for the day as we were staying in Swanage and because it was a day of heavy rain we decided to pop into the Shire Hall. We did not visit the museum as I have mobility issues, but we did visit the cafe. There was a lovely lift to the cafe and other areas and the food was delicious. I cannot recommend a visit enough.

Brilliant hour spent here. Had intended to go to the Teddy Bear Museum and the Tutankhamen exhibition but both were closed. Stumbled on this. Very good and informative and it was where the Tolpuddle Martyrs were tried. Also a free drink in the café. Excellent trip. Dorchester town centre is also worth a visit.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here and found it a very interesting experience. I especially enjoyed the stories of just a few people who had been tried there. The free Audio Guides were a bonus and the volunteers were very helpful. The Admission charge included a free Tea or Coffee which we enjoyed in the lovely Cafe (the Cafe is open to the public too). My only criticism was that on the Audio guide there were 4 stories of individuals. We were shown these when we picked up the Audio guides, but when we got to the Court room we were unable to listen to them and I had to ask a volunteer for help.

We enjoyed looking around the cells and court house where the Tolpuddle Martyrs and others were sentenced to either death, deportation to Australia or Gaol sentences, some as young as 11. All done with interactive headphones. Well worth a visit on a rainy day.
