Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I cannot speak highly enough about this little gem of a museum! Located in the heart of Shaftesbury, literally at the crest of the 'Hovis Advert' hill, there are stunning views from the gardens along with interesting and eclectic artefacts within. The museum is manned by knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers, who offer advice and guidance on how to get the best from your visit. There are objects from AD300 to the present day.
The museum spans two floors however with a lift and ramps it is easily accessible to all. Give yourself a treat and take some time to visit this marvellous place.

Really good small museum with friendly staff demonstrating the history of the local area. The museum asks for a small donation which is great!

Small free museum staffed by informed locals. Some interesting exhibits ranging from aeons ago to recent times. Loved the old firecart with its leather buckets!

A great little museum run by local volunteers at the top of Gold Hill made famous by the Hovis boy on a bike advert. An interesting collection depicting the history of Shaftesbury and the local area. Very and knowledgable staff. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Two very enthusiastic volunteers welcomed us, and were keen for us to go through to a back room to look at a beautifully made embroidered quilt, showing the landmarks of Shaftesbury. There were a couple of rooms with displays on the museum ground floor, and several upstairs, the latter being particularly interesting. Particularly unusual was a room devoted to dolls houses, made by a local resident who was the first woman to be ordained in the Church of England. She invented residents for them all, and furnished the houses appropriately. For example, there was a pair of semi detached houses, one lived in by two ‘bright young things’ and the other by an elderly couple, whose two sons had both been killed in the First World War. Their photographs, actually of the maker’s father and uncle, were included in the house furnishings. On the way out, there is a small shop, and behind the museum is a beautiful garden, overlooking the Blackmore Vale, of which there is a wonderful view. Visit was actually in 2021

The museum's eight galleries tell the story of Shaftesbury and the people who lived there over the centuries. It lies at the top of Gold Hill and has a beautiful garden. It is also child friendly as there are lots of objects that children can touch.
It is a lovely little museum run by really dedicated volunteers. Shaftesbury and the surrounding area is a great place for a mini-break.
