Originally a 12th century fortified bishop's palace which was leased to Sir Walter Raleigh and later became a powerful Civil War Royalist base. It fell to Parliament after a fierce 11 day siege. Now a romantic ruin and home to a great range of wildlife, birds and plants. A perfect picnic spot. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Nice afternoon.

Nice castle to visit. Take a picnic the children can run around for hours playing hide and seek. Good for the whole family

We decided to visit this castle during a quick stay in Somerset. The castle itself was quite small but perfectly formed! The insides were very interesting with staff in each room guiding you around the items of interest. The grounds were amazing, beautiful autumnal colours.

We decided to come here as we had a 'two for one' offer with English Heritage but it would have been worth the full admission. You may think that a heap of ruins couldn't be interesting but it was very well explained so that you can visualise what would have been there.

Explore the keep and ramparts of Bishop Roger's castle. Plenty of space for youngsters to run off some energy.

There's a clue in the name - it's the "old" castle and it's not a stately home. This does not mean that it is not worth visiting or that it is only suitable for a stroll and the views from it; there's a lot of history here. It was built not by a king or baron, but a bishop who... More

My husband and I went to take a look but didn't know you would have to pay to see it. As it's the old castle there is very little of it left and thought it too expensive £4.50 each to see it. So took a quick look at the outside and left. I certainly would not pay to hardly see... More

We went on a good day for outdoor persuits. Our only concern was that it was costly for what it is. Available information was limited without laying out more money. It would benefit from having a discounted price if you are visiting old and new castles together!

We were looking to visit "the other" Sherborne castle and ended up at this English Heritage site instead. We didn't feel the kids could handle two sites so once we realised our mistake decided on getting back in the car to head to the other one. However, I must highlight just how pleasant we found the chap working in reception... More

A truly quintessential English castle ruin complete with moat which must have been quite an impressive structure in its Heyday. One of Dorset's secret escapes and now a shadow of its former self, there is, nevertheless, still enough left to fire your imagination and to enable you to judge scale and extent. It is extremely well presented and managed. There... More
