Beautiful and Unique
Aug 2021 • Couples
So lovely and so unique! The woman running the shop was so kind and easy to talk to. She had such interesting stories and the shop itself is just beautiful to see and look around, then the museum downstairs (WHICH IS ONLY A POUND!) is such an interesting look at the history and inner workings of something I had never really considered thinking about before. The flowers themselves are even super cheap!! I got two different flowers both made from vintage velvet for just a fiver, absolute worth it and only takes about 10 minutes or so. It was so lovely and something so different!

More a workshop than a museum.
Jan 2020
This museum consists of two small rooms in the basement of the shop and is more of a workshop/storage space than a museum. However it is fascinating and you will not find anywhere like it in any other town. The demonstrations of the use of the old cutting press are really interesting and the stories from the lady in the shop about all the stage shows and films they have provided flowers for are great. Well worth a visit if you have any interest in film, stage or crafts.

Small, interesting shop and museum in the old town

The Flower Makers Museum is situated in a 14th century building in Hastings Old Town. At street level is a small shop making and selling artificial flowers, but in the basement is a museum. Whilst not very large, this unique museum, with its picturesque shop, is well worth a visit.

We had a good demonstration of how the flowers are made.
Very interesting and I think that its the only place still making flowers that way. So many shapes to see.

Go underneath the flower shop and there's a whole world of flower making history! The machine and blocks are really interesting.

I didn't know what to expect. Small, but intense. Ha brought back memories of childhood when artificial flowers were an every day thing.

You will never see this anywhere else.

From the early 1900s a fabric flower makers shop - still active - but with a museum.

Buy something as a memento but look at the hand work and skill and minute detail that goes into making flowers- that you might take for granted.

They have served several entertainment industry needs and other events you likely heard of.

Small - but unique

Fascinating & Well-kept Mini-Museum

My mum has been a craftsperson her whole life and used to make paper flowers so when I met up with parents for the day in Hastings I suggested we have a look around this shop and museum.
We were walking around the old town and stumbled upon the shop as it was covered up front with scaffolding. Once inside we were met by the owners, paid £1 each entry and then went down some narrow winding stairs into the basement to have a look at everything.
Apparently the tools in the shop are still used, the stamps and presses and cutters are displayed in two rooms with shelves of smaller tools in glass fronted cabinets, signage and posters on the walls and lots of old materials in nooks and crannies. We were given an info sheet to read and the owner came down after a few minutes to ask us if we had any questions. Once my mum got talking to him she was away and they had a good discussion about flower-making and the principles involved.
It's very cramped in the museum, there are boxes of examples of work completed for film and stage, and a small display of wedding lace and headdresses etc.
I thought it was wonderful and a product of real passion and enthusiasm, I'm so glad I heard about it and had a look around, even though I don't make flowers myself I could still appreciate the tools and equipment and the detail required.
On the way out I purhcased a couple of flowers made with vintage velvet as a present for my mum.
I'm not sure it's the right sort of place for younger kids, unless they show specific interest as the space is tight and full of breakable things. It is perfect for those interested in the history or stagecraft in theatre and film.
