- EIRE933 contributionsHasting's hidden gem! This museum is a must visit when in Hastings. We were left astonished by the vast range of maritime artefacts on display from various eras. Don't leave without seeing Primrose! Tim is a wealth of knowledge and guided us while providing the latest updates on some of the items on display and upcoming plans for the museum - there was even a physics lesson thrown in! What makes it even more impressive is that it is entirely volunteer run, with no public funding! Get out of the amusements and into this true gem of a museum!Hi there - Thanks ever so much for your highly complimentary review. It goes without saying that we're delighted to learn that you enjoyed your visit and learning about this country's maritime tradition. As you saw, there is more in this Museum than you would think on first impressions and it covers a huge range of topics from Cretaceous times through to one of our most recent and significant shipwrecks, the Derbyshire. And we're especially pleased that you said hello to Primrose. So many visitors leave the Museum without realising there are outside displays and so miss this impressive historic vessel. Do visit us again when - hopefully - we may have a couple of additional substantial items on show. - The Codnor TravellerCodnor, United Kingdom214 contributionsLovely, interesting, and engaging place.Right at the end of Old Town Hastings is this lovely, free museum that gives you a great insight into all things Shipwreck. A lot of the displays focus on a ship called The Amsterdam that was wrecked off the coast of Hastings in 1749, and whose wreckage (such as it now is) can still be visited on the coast, though I didn't do so on this occasion. There are lots of exhibits crammed into a relatively small space and all have explanations and information. There are pewter plates, coins, tableware, buttons, cannons, clothing and pieces of actual ships all on display here, and all salvaged from legitimate shipwrecks. There are also things for young children to enjoy too. When we were there they had brass rubbing, which my daughter really enjoyed. There is also a small shop and the opportunity to give a donation should you wish. Otherwise, this museum is 100% free, which seems incredible in this day and age. This place is volunteer run, making it all the better in my eyes, and I would hope that anyone visiting Hastings will stop by here and benefit from a visit to this thoroughly interesting and engaging place.Thank you very much for your kind comments and we're delighted to learn that you enjoyed your visit. As you saw, we cover a wide range of artefacts and people are surprised at just how much has been fitted in to what is quite a small museum. While everyone is welcome, we do pay special attention to our younger visitors who might otherwise feel that a trip to a Museum could be a bit boring. However, by the time they have sat on a dinosaur footprint, walked in the footsteps of dinosaurs, held fossilised 'poo' and engaged in all the art activities we offer, most of the youngsters have thoroughly enjoyable time and often make return visits. We rely entirely on donations and sales in our well-stocked shop for our continued existence. We don't charge an entrance fee as we are aware that a visit to the seaside can be expensive and we don't want people to miss out on learning more about this country's fascinating maritime heritage simply because they can't afford it. Incidentally, the wreck of the Amsterdam can normally only be seen during the comparatively rare low Spring tides. At the moment, however, a movement in the beach has covered much of the ship and so not a great deal can be seen - but a thumping good Easterly should remedy this situation. Once the sediment has cleared, the Shipwreck Museum will be resuming its hugely popular guided walks to the vessel.Written 2 June 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 May 2024
- Jessica P2 contributionsHidden gem of HastingsI have lived in Hastings all my life, but my trip yesterday was my first time ever visiting, this museum is not only thing which is a hidden gem, the staff are too! Tim approached myself and my friend and was so incredibly friendly and educated us on the exhibits, he was so unbelievably lovely and devoted to his job, a true asset to the museum. If you’re visiting Hastings or even live here like me, take the time to visit, you won’t regret it! Thank you again Tim, you made my day with your kindness!Hi there - Thanks ever so much for your kind review and we're really pleased to learn that you enjoyed your visit. You are certainly not alone in being a lifelong resident of Hastings and not having known about, or visited, us before. It seems that, at times, this Museum goes out of its way to hide its presence and we meet a considerable number of people who tell us that they have regularly travelled along Rock-a-Nore Road without ever having noticed us, notwithstanding that we are situated immediately on the roadside! As you saw, there is more in this Museum than seems possible in what is quite a modestly-sized building. We want to make sure that visitors see everything and learn about the fascinating stories behind the exhibits and so it was more than a pleasure to be able to point out everything to you. Do come and see us again - especially as - hopefully - we are about to make two very substantial additions to our collection. I will say no more at this point, except to mention that Primrose may well be getting a couple of highly significant historical companions in the next few weeks! - sabatinitennisAshford, United Kingdom3,728 contributionsAn interesting museum. This museum is FREE to enter and you pass through a retail outlet as you enter which sells a wide range of fishy, non-fishy, maritime and boat related items. Inside are a few rooms well stocked with items that spent a long time on the sea floor and a TV with a film playing about local ship wrecks. The displays have been thoughtfully arranged and will keep your interest as you walk around the building. An unusual, but inspiring museum.Hello. Thank you for your observations and we're pleased to learn that you found your visit interesting. As you saw, this relatively small museum contains a wealth of artefacts covering a very broad range of subjects The shop does indeed contain a wide variety of merchandise and also serves to provide funds to help run the museum. Hopefully, you'll visit us again as we are always adding to our displays. - Lurra/Leia WrightKent, United Kingdom98 contributionsLovely adventureI popped in here on my Hastings trip with family after insisting they would enjoy it and it was free. Inside was lots and lots of artificers from shipwrecks, parts of shipwrecks and a few bones from dinosaurs and a few human ones. It’s very interactive in there, tying knots and lifting wooden weights, I felt like I was on a ship at that point. Gift shop is very well stocked and full of interesting things. Well done museum!Hi - It sounds as though your family needed a little persuasion before coming into the Museum. We do hope there was nothing in our appearance that initially put them off but are delighted that they ultimately enjoyed their visit. As I have mentioned on other occasions, there is far more on display than seems possible within a building of relatively modest dimensions and it covers a huge range of interests. Visitors, especially the younger ones, always enjoy the hands-on activities. It was also good to learn that you appreciated the broad range of gifts and other items within our shop. See you again soon, we hope. - Sue WCheltenham, United Kingdom12 contributionsGreat local museumReally great museum with lots of varied artefacts from the Roman period all the way up to the modern era. Run by friendly and enthusiastic volunteers who are moved than happy to answer any questions. Great activities for kids .Hi - Thank you so much for letting us know you enjoyed your visit. People are often surprised at just how much is packed into what is a relatively small museum. We are also very aware that many youngsters might find the idea of museums a bit uninspiring so we try to make sure there is plenty for them to do. The activities might seem a bit 'lo-tech' but we've found that children still enjoy colouring-in, doing word puzzles and brass-rubbing in addition to hands-on contact with dinosaurs. And we are always very pleased to answer visitors' enquiries or point out things that they might miss. Hope to see you again soon. A volunteer was very kind and showed us some of the exhibits including a 4000 year old tree.Hi - We're very pleased to learn that you enjoyed your visit to the Museum. We feel it is very important that as many people as possible have an opportunity to learn something about this country's long and noble maritime heritage and so we try to make our displays as interesting as possible, with special regards to capturing the attention of our younger visitors. It is also the reason we don't charge an entrance fee as we don't want to deter people from coming in simply because they feel they can't afford to pay. However, we do encourage visitors to make a donation if they can and perhaps purchase something from our gift and souvenir shop. And we're delighted you saw the tree. - ZolatheGreekLondon, United Kingdom225 contributionsSweet Little MuseumA sweet little museum with friendly and informative people working there. A couple of the exhibits are very interesting. Not the most exciting of museums, and perhaps could do with a refresh, but worth supporting. Definitely worth a wander through and a donation on a grey day.Hi - We've been called many things before, but you're the first person to describe us as "sweet". I'm not entirely certain what it implies but I take it to be a compliment, for which - thank you very much. Then you say we are not "the most exiting of museums". Again, I'm not certain precisely what you mean. If it's referring to a lack of high-tec VR displays and screen presentations, then - yes - you're correct. These are hugely expensive and, as a small independent museum, we just don't have the funds to acquire this kind of equipment. We continue to rely - very successfully, I might add - on old-fashioned 'lo-tec' displays which allow people to have direct hands-on contact. Visitors can feel a perfectly-preserved 4000-year-old tree, a Cretaceous period fossil and much else. Youngsters can sit on a dinosaur footprint or walk in dinosaur footprints - which they find very 'exciting'. We do need to undertake some redecoration and this will be carried out during the winter season when visitor numbers drop off, enabling us to carry out work which might prove somewhat disruptive if the museum is a bit crowded. Thank you for your donation. Along with sales in our gift shop, it is our only means of revenue. We have deliberately tried to avoid charging an entrance fee as we don't want to deter people from learning more about this country's rich maritime heritage simply because they feel they might not be able to afford it. We are definitely worth exploring - not just wandering through - on all days, not just grey ones. We visited Hastings on a rainy day. So this was a good option for us to do. It's a free museum. I think minimum card donation is £5 which I felt was a bit steep. Smaller options would probably help get more money in. The displays were really informative. There's a kids table at the end so they can colour and do a brass rubbing. There's even dinosaur feet you can walk in if you're small and light. There was a really helpful staff member who showed my daughter how to use the computer screen and check what ships and boats were moving through the channel. That was very kind. There's a couple of other activities - weight lifting through pulleys. They've obviously put a lot of effort into the museum. If you like wrecks, this should be fun for you. We didn't stay too long as it was quite busy.

We're delighted to learn that you enjoyed your visit to the Museum. We have tried to make everything as informative and entertaining as possible and our small team of volunteers always tries to make each person's visit just that little bit more special.
As far as the donation is concerned, we did originally set the figure at £3. It was at the prompting of several visitors that we raised it to £5 who said that the quality and professionalism of the Museum was worth that figure, especially as we didn't charge for entry. The donation, of course, is voluntary, and if visitors prefer to pay less, then they can pay a lower amount by cash or, if card transaction is preferred, payment can be made at the shop counter. I would point out that donations and shop sales are our only source of income.
I hope the Museum is fun for those who maybe don't have a great interest in wrecks, but who love history and tradition in general. Visitors are astonished to discover part of the 2000 year old London Bridge, a 4000 year old perfectly preserved tree and 140 million year old dinosaur remains, amongst many other things. Children are delighted at the range of hands-on activities. I'm just sorry that you felt you had to leave because it was so busy. It would seem that, after years of being Hastings' biggest secret, more and more people have now heard of us and our visitor numbers are steadily increasing. Do come again when, hopefully, we aren't quite so full.

Great little museum with an easy to follow lay out.
Some very eye opening and intriguing things on display from cannons to little coins that pretty much formed the import and export all over the world.
There is interactive installations all around the museum which are great for younger ones, or as we found on the rope knotting bar, competitive couples!
We were handed dinosaur bones on our walk round, a vertebrae and a femur (I think) whilst we looked at the dinosaur foot prints found only 2 years ago just a short walk from the museum.
For free entry, it is great, although the only slight downside to our experience (and this is down to our preference) we were repeatedly asked if we’d like to be shown this that and the other. Which we found great for more introverted/shy people, but we are the type to ask should we like to know more. I must add, each time we were asked by the different staff, each were very very polite and friendly!

Hi. Thank you for your review and we're pleased to learn that, overall, you enjoyed your visit and found our varied displays interesting.
However, we're sorry that you found the volunteer steward's attention to be intrusive. We try very hard to ensure that everyone feels welcome and gets as much out of their visit as possible. As you saw, we have quite a large and impressive display of artefacts and it is easy to overlook many of the items. In general, we have received the clear impression from Tripadvisor reviews and messages left in our Visitors' Book that most people have appreciated having things pointed out to them and explained.
I can only apologise if, in this instance, we unintentionally caused annoyance.

Some interesting artefacts and videos but perhaps they need to update what has happened since the wrecks were discovered etc. My husband probably found it more interesting than I did but it was worth visiting. It is free, but didn't feel any obligation to donate ( we did) or to purchase anything ( we didn't)

Hi - We're naturally sorry to learn that you didn't really enjoy your visit to the Shipwreck Museum. If history, heritage and stories from the oceans isn't quite your thing, then it is perhaps no surprise to learn that you found it all a bit uninteresting. I would add, incidentally, that you are part of the tiniest of minorities who found their visit to be a bit tedious. The overwhelming majority of visitors find this Museum to be fascinating and you only have to scroll through past TripAdvisor correspondents to get an idea of the overall opinion of people who visit us.
Thank you for having donated. It's much appreciated.

Popped into this small museum with our two youngest (14 and 12) after visiting Blue Reef Aquarium, as it is right next door. It contains some interesting facts and exhibits and the children had the chance to do a type of “brass rubbing” and pull some weights on pullies. I would not go out of my way to travel here, but definitely worth a visit if passing by. We spent about 25 minutes in here and there is no admission fee

Great if in area also visit fisherman's museum basically next door .Expensive parking so try to park in old London road restrictions or Dudley road no restrictions. Enjoy a walk through the old town Lots to se and do and amusements. Some good pubs tucked away. Great displays that put some charging museums in other towns to shame.

I grew up in Hastings and my parents still live here. None of us had ever visited this museum until today! It is an incredible place and we wish we’d discovered it sooner! The staff are delightful and incredibly knowledgeable, the artefacts on display are fascinating, and it’s FREE. From an original 1st century timber from the first bridge over the River Thames, to dinosaur footprints, and parts of a 1201 ship, this museum has something for everyone. Interactive in places, too, and lots of personal stories/information. Great gift shop as well. An absolute must if you’re visiting Hastings.

We're so pleased that you eventually found us and enjoyed your visit. As I have noted before in other TripAdvisor messages, it is a complete mystery as to why this Museum remains totally unknown to so many folk in Hastings and the surrounding area. We know that many people walk up and down the road, go into the Fishermen's Museum and the Blue Reef Aquarium on either side of us and yet completely overlook us. However, when they do eventually locate us and come on in, they are absolutely astonished to discover what this building contains.
Thank you ever so much for your kind comments and next time you're visiting, make yourselves known and we can probably show you some of our other treasures which you might have missed the first time.

Found this museum today, after going to Hastings for 25+ years. How did we miss this place? Great little gem, very interesting museum covering local shipwrecks, in particular the Amsterdam an 18th century Dutch East Indiaman.
Very knowledgeable staff, free to enter so please do leave a donation as they get no funding.
Will be back next time we visit, cannot believe we walked past this place so many times over the years!

Hi there. Yours is a question we hear so often. For some reason which just cannot be explained, this Museum manages to hide its existence. Most of Hastings seems not to be aware of us. We often meet people who have lived in the town for years and regularly visit Rock-a-Nore Road, have seen and called into the Fishermen's Museum and the Blue Reef Aquarium that lie either side of us, but have failed to noticed the not insubstantial Shipwreck Museum. When, however, they do spot us and come on in, they are astonished at what they find.
Because of the weather on the day of your visit, you probably did not have a chance to meet Primrose, who sits outside in our yard. So you'll have to come back and we'd be delighted to show you a number of things that you might have missed the first time round.
Thank you for writing and we're glad you enjoyed your experience here.

There is a lot in this small local museum, and not all of it is about wrecks! Certainly the information about the wrecks represented is useful, and there is a lot of nautical paraphernalia that often needs to be described to laypeople who cannot understand it otherwise! Perhaps some 3D models could help in some cases, such as explaining how steering a ship could use a rudder moved by a tiller or a drum or a wheel. The summary of the wrecks of the Amsterdam and the Anne are very useful and we would love to go on one of the low tide trips to see the hull of the Amsterdam.
The local maritime exhibits and the fossil finds add to the interest of this museum. If I lived in Hastings, then I would be interested in joining the volunteers who make much of this possible!

Hi Shaun - Thanks for your kind observations.
We would love to feature some more modern technology to help explain various artefacts and displays but we simply cannot afford it. As you know, we don't charge admission and rely almost entirely for our income on donations and sales in our shop.
A lot of information is given for each display, but we do have to be careful not to overload the visitor with too many facts and figures.
We would love to welcome you aboard as a volunteer. We appreciate that you don't live locally but there may well be areas of activity where you can help remotely, such as publicity, IT, marketing, etc.
Please do get in touch if you'd like to talk over the possibilities.
Best wishes
