Walking around Rye.

Walking around Rye & we found this little gem not far from the River Rother. Lots to look at & great views down across the river.

Lovely historic castle with lots to see inside
Aug 2021 • Couples
It was so good to come back to Rye for a stay over August Bank Holiday, and this castle was one of things I'd made a priority to go and visit.

I'd last been there in 2005, but we didn't see inside that time - it's possible it was still being renovated or we'd arrived after they'd closed.

But no such problems this time - it was wonderful to walk around and get a real sense of history.
The castle is full of artefacts and information about its past - it would make a great place for a school trip.
There were some interactive exhibits too, which were fun - and we loved seeing the old women's prison outside and the former exercise yard - now a very pleasant walled garden.

The row of cannons outside really set the scene, and it must have made for an impressive sight for those arriving by boat - friend or foe!

Staff were friendly and helpful, and we really enjoyed our visit.
Def a must for anyone visiting the town and wanting to really discover its history.

Interesting Visit
Aug 2021
Steeped in lots of history Ypres Tower Museum is a really interesting place to visit. The entry fee of £4 per adult also makes is reasonably priced.

Historic and informative.
Aug 2021
Brilliant museum but mind your head as some ceilings are a little low! Brilliant collection of old weapons from longbows (circa William the Conqueror) to muskets and pistols. Climb up the narrow spiral staircase to see the wide ranging views of the River Rother and imagine the canons guarding our land from the various invaders back in the day! Kids loved the giblet (complete with skeleton within) and playing around on the cannons in the superbly named Gun Garden (really need one of these at home)!!

Iconic historic building
Jul 2021
Picturesque historic building that contains a small museum. All very interesting and well worth a visit, but you will see all there is to see within an hour. £4 to get in, or £3 if you're over 65, so not too much damage to your pocket.

Ypres Tower and Gun Garden
Sep 2020
The museum wasn't open when we were there but the tower is impressive. It was very pleasant though to walk in the adjacent Gun Garden. The views across to Camber and Dungeness are pretty good and it's a cute little park, a bit out of the way so quiet and not at all busy. Lots of canons and places to sit. Right next door there is a pub with a garden, so everything you need really.

Beautiful building and location, surrounded by old cobbled streets and houses, pretty garden on its own hill with models of cannons. Well worth the time of visiting if you are in the area.
