As someone who visits Westonbirt and the Pantry on a weekly basis to meet and share brunch with friends.. I have to say I am consistently disappointed in the customer service from the Pantry. The individual serving us is usually grumpy and unhelpful which is not what’s expected in such a beautiful setting, perhaps they are just not a morning person! We have regularly purchased bacon rolls as our mid way treat during our visit.. and sit eagerly awaiting our name to be called for our order, debating with anticipation ’will it be hot this week’ …this has had to change as we have lived in hope week in week out that the bacon might be hot when it’s put in the cold brioche bun.. is it too much to hope for a decent bacon bun for £3.50?

Having spent all last year recovering from two total knee replacements, one of the things on my 'to do' list after recovery and after regaining my confidence, was to revisit the Arboretum.

We arrived this afternoon, a beautiful sunny but very cold day. The car park was less than a third full. Most people were going home. It was extremely quiet.

As I approached the ticket office an elderly couple, both using walking sticks, ahead of me seemed upset about something. I didn't quite catch all they were saying, but I heard "We have been coming here for 20 years "......... they looked very sad.

I walked up to the 'reception' and showed our Membership cards which they guy confirmed were valid. "Have you booked?" he said from behind the glass in his warm office. I hadn't booked. Having not been to the Arboretum in 2 years I didn't realise you had to book.

The man in the warm office said "you cant come in unless you have booked" I said to him - there is no one around. He said "You have to book. Go on the website, choose a time and get your ticket".

I went on the website and filled in all the boxes and then got to the bit where I had to make a password. By this time my fingers were getting very cold. I tried three attempts to make a password but the computer said "NO"!

I said to the guy in the warm office - look this is ridiculous, I cant get the website to accept my password. He then suggested i ring someone and proceeded to hold up a piece of A4 paper with a number on to ring so that I could get permission to enter the Arboretum - remember this is the Arboretum that I have been a member of for over 3 years and they were refusing to let me in.

I rang the number - by this time I was getting really chilly. My husband had given up and was walking back to the car. A sort of "We are extremely busy at the moment and we might take a while to answer your call"......... message answered. Then when my call was answered I said "Im trying to get into Westonbirt Arboretum and I have been told to ring you...."

The lady on the phone said "Im really sorry I'm new here so it might take a while to assist you" or similar to that. It all felt so ridiculous. There I was, standing in the cold, a fully paid up member of the Arboretum, no one in sight. During all the time Id been fiddling on my phone trying to get in that way, and all the time I had been speaking on the phone - NOT ONE person had gone in to the Arboretum. NOT ONE!

I gave up on trying to get in to the Arboretum and reluctantly went back to my car to go home. Extremely upset.

I do not understand this policy. It surely cant be covid, and it certainly wasn't overcrowding.

I am appalled at the lack of flexibility and the poor customer service. Was there not a computer in the warm office where the man could have allocated us a ticket to save us all the ridiculous messing around my phone?

We are cancelling our membership and we will not be renewing next year as we are obviously not welcome at the Arboretum any more.

For over twenty years we have been members/friends at Westonbirt and over that time things have changed, but unfortunately not for the better.

During our most recent we arrived with a view to restarting our memberships, but unlikely for the immediate future.

*Booking system punitive and unnecessary
*Turnstiles redundant
*New Café over fussy with separate seating areas depending on where you are eating/drinking

Such a shame.

Westonbirt is a very good place for a long walk to see their wonderful selection of trees. The old arboretum is good in that it doesn't allow dogs in that part. At weekends you can get an excellent guided tour from a volunteer for £1 and they will pick out the best tress at that particular time of year.

We visited with family ,4 adults 2 children and I have to say found it very disappointing. We have been to the lights before about 4 / 5 years ago but found this years trail very underwhelming. The Christmas village was a very expensive fun fair which was extra to your tickets and the light trail really didn’t make enough of the natural beauty of the trees . The children quite enjoyed looking for reindeer but the elder one was quite bored by the end . Definitely think this could be improved and wonder , due to the difficulties faced with covid whether this year price was the main consideration rather than content and quality .

When is Westonbirt going to stop this ridiculous, time wasting, spontaneity robbing, inconvenient booking system? Only half of our booking made the allotted time slot today, as it was taking longer than expected to get our 88 year old mother there, so they abandoned the attempt. Equally annoying was the fact that the booking system showed 'sold out' for all times up to 3pm. but on arrival at 10.45am, the car park was half empty.
If you are trying to alienate 20 year standing members, you are doing an excellent job.

As a group of adults we picked a late time slot but still found the experience very geared towards children. I think this could equally be a fabulous experience for adults - the trees were beautifully illuminated but for £18 I would have liked more lighting installations and greater variety. Enjoyed the hot chocolate half way round though!

What an excellent evening! A delight for all of our family from 5 to 70 years old. A lovely way to share a pre-Christmas experience. The children were captivated in the search for the reindeer and it was great to have interaction from the elves.
I have been to several light shows but this themed approach proved a real hit. Will certainly return next year.

Every year we do a different Christmas trail, Blenheim Palace and Longleaf the past 2 years which were amazing and this year we did Westonbirt, what a disappointment for the price it was a few coloured lit up trees, nothing like we expected! Expensive fun fair and £3.50 to toast marshmallow and they couldn’t even give us as second stick so my 2 daughters could share! Won’t be visiting again!!

Several of us went to this in early December and sadly thought it overpriced and very underwhelming aimed much more for kids. £18 each to shuffle round a path of trees with some coloured spotlights on them. Kids get a storybook to follow to 'find Rudolph'.
We got there early hoping to find a Christmas village with stalls of gifts but instead found a fun fair with very expensive food stalls selling greasy burgers and hot dogs. If you've got young kids, I guess they would enjoy it, but for an adult only party, we wouldn't recommend it and left very disappointed. There are far better alternatives elsewhere.
