- Jane2 contributionsArts Society visit to Chavenage HouseOur local Arts Society visited Chavenage House on Thursday 8 June. We were lucky to enjoy glorious sunshine and were given a warm welcome by George and Caroline. After a delicious buffet lunch prepared by Lavinia and her team we were given a guided tour of the house where we learned not only about the history of the building, amusing anecdotes of family life and the challenges facing the family over the last 50 years. Altogether a fascinating and unique afternoon in beautiful surroundings.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 10 June 2023
- jackie c10 contributionsChavenage House, an absolute GemThe house is an absolute gem to visit set in the Cotswolds 400+ years old and nothing has changed. It is very much a family home with 4 generations living on site, it is steeped in history, every room telling a story and thanks to George Loosley Williams these stories come to life as he guides you through each room. Oliver Cromwell even stayed in one room, and there are stories from a childhood bought up at Chavenage House. The tour is the the highlight of the visit and whilst they are no formal gardens the view is as far as the eye can see with no hint of the modern world in sight...a view that has remained unchanged for 400 years plus....take your own tea as there is no coffee shop or gift shop on site, again another bonus as the house and grounds remain unspoilt in every way.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 June 2023

Caroline and George gave such a warm welcome and could not have been more entertaining , regaling the history of the house and family ,with amusing stories and anecdotes. It is a testament to the family that film & TV wish to use the house so much for various and interesting productions. This visit is a must, it puts history in place for the region and in particular makes you appreciate the importance of family and life in general as the history gives perspective. Thoroughly recommended and a big thank you to all the family for such enthusiasm and warmth, allowing us to see their home and being part of the house 's history for the moment we were there.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 July 2023

The groups with whom I went opted to have lunch before our tours on both occasions and they were delicious. The family are very welcoming. I have been fortunate to have done tours with Caroline and George both of whom are gifted speakers and not only informative but very entertaining. Their love for their family home and its fascinating history is obvious. Chavenage is well worth a visit.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 10 July 2023
- Jay BFairhope, Alabama1,023 contributionsHistory You Can TouchChavenage House is simply one the best attractions we have ever encountered. This private house and estate are from the Elizabethan era and are incredibly well preserved. We were hosted and toured around the house by Colin and Caroline, members of the current owners family. The personal touch provided by them added so much fun and validity to the experience. Poldark, a quite popular British TV series, was filmed here as well as other productions. The history of Chavenage is incredible. You will see many pieces of history including the Oliver Cromwell bedroom, amazing tapestries, Elizabethan era furniture, the family's private tea room, the Eisenhower room where the general and others planned D Day, the unique Catholic/Church of England family chapel, and much more. Best of all, you can actually touch many historical items and sit on the ancient furniture. This makes Chavenage special and so different from most historical places, where everything is roped off with "do not touch" signs everywhere. If you are traveling to near Tetbury or in the Cotswolds, try and work Chavenage into your itinerary. You will be glad you did!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 July 2023

- Evelyn MBristol, United Kingdom1 contributionA delightful tour of an enchanting family homeWe were lucky enough to join a pre-booked group tour of lovely W I ladies at very short notice. My four sisters had travelled from Northumberland the previous day to spend a few days with me and I knew they would be enchanted if I was able get them there. I emailed Caroline Lowsley-Williams and was delighted when she said we could join. David Lowsley-Williams led the tour around his family home. A natural raconteur, he was very informative about the history of both the house and the family, as well as being extremely amusing. We were all charmed. It was the highlight of my sisters’ visit. I would thoroughly recommend a visit as a group or see if you can join a group as we did.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 8 August 2023

One cannot describe how difficult it must be for this wonderful family to preserve this magnificent Elizabethan House and home.
Left just as it was in some of the most important years in our countries history, you are allowed to feel as though you were actually watching the story book unfold.
You are guided from room to room with wonderful aplomb by both the present owners and learned friends.
This really is a must do visit if you want to have a long lasting memory of old England.
Be prepared for a very interesting, educational and extremely comical experience.
Film studios love the settings and lots of series and movies have used this exciting find.
Better left for your guides to tell you the wonderful stories that of course come from the Actors and film sets.

We piggybacked on a larger coach tour as the house is officially closed for the winter, but the wonderful owner, Caroline Lowsley-Williams, will do all she can to fit you in. It was one of the highlights of our weekend away. Not only is the house an English gem in its own right, particularly the two bedrooms completely hung with tapestries, but Caroline is one of the wittiest and most entertaining tour guides I have ever had the pleasure to meet. She would make the best history teacher you ever had, and I would love to see her in action with a school group. If you are in the area, do go and visit, even if you're not a Poldark fan.

Chavenage is not just a spectacular house to visit, but it is also a facinating family home, full of history. We were made to feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble - we actually felt like part of the family! There was never a "please dont sit there or touch this", we were just encouraged to explore and make ourselves at home. It was a very special afternoon and the sun shone!

We very much enjoyed our visit to this lovely country house, set in an unspoiled area with great views.
The house is of great interest, both for its long and varied history but it’s more recent use for film and Tv location shoots.
The owners took us on a very interesting and amusing guided tour of the house. Photography allowed. Then showed us the view to the Marlborough downs 27 miles away and the family chapel in the grounds
Well worth a visit

Don't expect a NT experience here but expect the unexpected. Chavenage House is a gem to be treasured along with the tremendous characters that live in it and act as tour guides . The tour was incredibly informative and relaxed in equal measure. Links to Poldark added to the interest . We just loved it here.

Our visit coincided with a small group of locals. The owner of the property, a Grade 1 listed house, provided an humorous introduction to the house and then a well informed guide led the tour of the house. Beside the filming of Poldark, visits by notable people including Cromwell established the history. Fascinating stories and insights made this a memorable site to visit.

Our visit to this lovely Manor house was a true highlight of our stay in the Cotswold area. Caroline was terrific on email and helped arrange a visit for my husband and I. Just driving up to the house was a thrill! All my memories of Larkrise and Poldark came to life. Caroline and her brother George provided the tour and both are so charming, witty, and genuine. They had us all laughing out loud or making our jaws drop at some of the incredible historical pieces to view. Be sure to add this tour to your travel adventures. Highly recommend!!

Could you tell me if there will be conducted tours this Saturday, the 21st July. If so at what time, and is it possible to book a place for two persons. Alternatively if not Saturday, on Friday 20th.
I look forward to receiving your reply, thank you Ann Bell

CarolineChav
tetbury31 contributions
Sorry for the delay - I have been away for a week. I am afraid that we only permit care dogs in the house and immediate grounds. Our own dogs are not very friendly to other dogs and our free range chickens take exception to other dogs. they is plenty of shade in the car park. We are very happy for you to walk your dog up the avenue or on our open green. Hope to see you soon.
