    Spectacle of light - Disappointed
We had been looking forward to this event for 2 years, thanks to covid it was our third attempt to see it. Everyman provided great customer service getting the tickets transfered, as were the admin team at sudeley castle. However, on the night we were rushed from the minute we arrived. There were plenty of others about in the castle and another couple of parties arriving at the same time. The lady at the gate was very animated in telling us we must rush to the gate and not be there after 7.30pm or we would be turned away. The chap on the entrance was fab, friendly and funny - not a mention of hurrying. We mingle with others on the first part of the walk and arrived at the food area about 8pm. There were 10 of us and we all ordered food and drinks without a problem, but the ladies serving the food were very rude about a family behind that were approaching - calling them “jokers” if they were expecting food. I thought that a bit odd….until we sat to eat our food and people were loudly clearing up around us…..making it obvious they wanted us to leave and eventually did say you’ve got 5 minutes. We were also followed into the toilets to be hurried along. It really spoiled the night! We rushed the second half. After taking over an hour to get there, spending £240 to get in and a further £150 minimum on food and drink to be rushed and have the evening spoiled I would not return. There were no Xmas decorations, no Xmas tree, no Xmas music? I appreciate it’s a spectacle of light but rightly or wrongly I’d have expected some Xmas reference. I did email customer service to discuss but got no reply so decided to leave my review here.
We are very sorry to hear that you were disappointed by your Spectacle of Light experience. Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. I believe both the Spectacle of Light organisers and our own events team have been in touch with you, if you'd like to discuss further.

    Sadly underwhelmed
So sad to say but we were really disappointed with the event this year. There were not any actors like last year to interact with and entertain the children. I loved the music timed with lights last year but this year you couldn’t really hear the music. There are some absolutely beautiful bits to the walk but these are overshadowed by most of it. The event didn’t have any festive vibes. It would be better if there were things for children to do. Food and drink was nice but expensive and limited. Unfortunately, we will not be returning next year.
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review, we are sorry to hear that you were disappointed by the Spectacle of Light this year, will pass on your feedback to the organisers of the event.

    Fit for Queen Kateryn Parr!
The views of the hills, sheep, and exterior castle are amazing. Our primary purpose of seeing the tomb of Kateryn Parr more than met expectations. The castle interior is available as a museum about the castle's history, but not as a way of seeing the interior architecture or design. The cafe had simple, delicious lunches.

Don't trust the timing on the ticket - just enjoy your day
I would have said it was fantastic, but a strange requirement to be at the entrance sharp at a certain hour made it all wrong! Further more it was specified that one has half an hour for a tour. I booked tickets for 10 friends and we took the first available time - 10 am. Once we got there, we were told that the main buildings don't open until 11. So what was the reason to be there at 10 am sharp? The gardens were fantastic and we had a great time walking around, but nobody was at the entrance to check the tickets. There was no way to walk around for just half an hour. In fact, anyone can spend there the entire day and nobody would check when he entered or when he left. There is so much to explore outside and inside and I find it ridiculous to stress people over particular entry time and even specify it is for half an hour only. From the entrance to the main building takes about 10 minutes walking. When did they measure the time? Once we were inside, we just walked around, spoke with the guides, discussed history and once again nobody measured our timing. Sudeley Castle is an amazing and inspirational place, full of history and excitement. I think the management of the castle should check their admission policies, don't stress visitors over the meaningless exact timing as once people get in, they are all really happy to be there for as long as they want.
Thank you your review. We are delighted that you found much to interest you at Sudeley and that there was plenty to explore. During the online booking process, visitors are first invited to choose a time slot for arrival on a date of their choosing. This simply means you can arrive and check in anytime within that half hour. Once arrived, visitors are welcome to stay in the grounds until closing time. If a visitor also adds the 30 minute Royals, Ruins and Revival tour, they are then invited to select their preferred time: 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm and 1.30pm. We hope that clarifies the situation. Guests should have their tickets checked as they pass through the Visitor Centre on arrival. We hope to welcome you back to the Castle and Gardens in the future.

    A disappointing new restaurant
The new Pavillion Restaurant was most disappointing and in sharp contrast to the excellent visit to the castle itself. The small portion of carrot and coriander soup served in a cardboard bowl with a half a small white roll was poor and the hot dog was also below expectations and expensive. The setting is pleasant and the service was efficient and cheerful. However, the restaurant was well below the standard of the magnificent castle and needs to improve urgently.
Thank you for your message. We are delighted that you enjoyed the Castle. Sorry to hear that the Pavilion was not up to your expectation. We will share the feedback with our Chef and look at the options going forward. Thank you for your feedback. It is very important to us.

    Disappointed
Whilst the grounds and castle are worth a visit normally. We were disappointed however this time to not being able to going into the queens garden, library, cafe or the chapel due to a wedding. The pavilion was open for food but limited choice. Catering team were lovely especially Maria. We checked the website and only a wedding shown on the 28th. If we had know these areas were not open we would not of paid to come in, as the queens garden is a firm favourite of ours. Expensive for limited access.
Hi Thank you for your message and I am sorry you were disappointed with your latest trip. We did indeed have a wedding on the 19th and the chapel was closed for an hour for the service. The library was open (but does close at 4 daily) so I am sorry you did not get in, likewise the Queens Garden was open and the wedding guests did enjoy the space along with our day visitors. The Pavilion as you say was open and does offer the same selection of food as the Cafe up at the Castle. I am sorry you were disappointed on this occasion but hope you will visit us again and enjoy the Garden once more.

    Enjoyable couple of hours
Our trip to Sudeley Castle was an enjoyable couple of hours. Inside the house is interesting but the highlights for me are the church and the beautiful views from the lovely gardens out across the surrounding countryside. The staff were knowledgable and helpful. We ate lunch in the restaurant which was good and staffed by an extremely friendly team. Overall, a nice afternoon of slightly on the expensive side.
Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted you enjoyed your visit to the Castle and Gardens and hope to welcome you back another time.

    Very enjoyable
Enjoyable day out. Travelled from Birmingham and worth the trip. Guided your really informative and essential in my view to get the most out of the site. Beautiful gardens were the highlight. Nice gift shop also. However the pavilion cafe was incredibly disappointing….what a poor selection of food offered. I really expected some basic traditional lunch options and English cream teas etc
Thank you for visiting Sudeley Castle and Gardens and we are delighted you enjoyed your trip. Thank you for your feedback on the food offering - we look at our options for next season in the coming months. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Royal Queen Consort Catherine Parr buried in the castle church
We attended on the anniversary of Catherine Parr's death, there were people in costume walking around, and there were talks about Catherine Parr throughout the day in the church where she is buried. We paid £19 per adult which is ok considering a royal queen consort is buried there and free parking, plenty of room for any sized vehicle, so cant really grumble. You see some famous paintings in the castle, aswell as old royal possesions. There are beautiful gardens, a giftshop & cafe, toliets and a separate with changing facilities for a baby. The gardens and cafe is dog friendly however dont think their allowed in the castle. If you want to look at the castle exhibition, it isnt wheelchair friendly ie no lift, but it has some stuff on the ground floor. Two of our group carried a heavy pushchair up and down the multiple stairs. Technically you could visit for free just not pay and walk round the gardens and go to the cafe. We wont be returning only because its out our way but am glad to have visited.

    Pleasant but with drawbacks
Overall a quiet and pleasant few hours at this castle. Interesting history which is explained in detail. Not a vast amount of the building to see in the general walk round. ‘Pay more for a tour of other parts…..’ Modest gardens which are well maintained. Was hoping to enjoy lunch here but pavilion closed for private function leaving us with a sandwich in the cafe at the entry! Note to customer service - a notice on the website with regard to dates restaurant is closed is the very least you could do. Noting weddings like the one today are booked months if not years ahead makes it possible to do this. Consensus of the group was that the visit was a tad disappointing.
Thank you for visiting Sudeley Castle and Gardens and for taking the time to feedback. The cafe at the front of the castle is always open, even when we have a wedding at the castle, so there is always a food option available to our day visitors. I will pass the feedback on to the events team so we can perhaps update the website going forward. Thank you for your comments.

Fantastic, very enjoyable whether going solo or with friends, family etc. The trail of a spectacle of light with real life characters enroute out of 'The wizard of oz' made things also entertaining. The witch was so real in character and her witchlike voice and cackle that as even as an adult I thought she was real, although the other real life characters were also Very good. My daughter (13) wasn't particularly looking forward going to it but she also came away thoroughly enjoying the display of lights, the superb actors, water fountains, giant elephants, giant hedgehog and other animals, also the castle and garden grounds lit up. Also you can get refreshments (hot drinks and food) when you get part of the way around the trail (although not exactly cheap) but maybe it's because I'm tight, so maybe take some thermal flasks along to keep your hands warm as well. I would recommend to anyone of any age as an enjoyable, entertaining experience as even my mother-in-law thoroughly enjoyed it as she got photos taken with the witch who apparently is her new sister. The witch that was there last night Friday 24th Nov was worth the entry money alone. Great character and so realistic with her presence! I You can hear her cackle from a distance away. Although the other characters were Very good as well! We all got photos with them. Also the setting of Sudeley Castle and the garden grounds etc. made the experience even more enthralling especially on a cold winters night lit up with every colour made the experience even more fitting.
Also there is a nice gift shop which is selling a very good selection of items, gifts etc. We'll be going back next year in 2024.

We visited Sudeley Castle this month with a group of friends & thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The whole visit was a great experience, we had an excellent talk from Ros when we arrived which was so informative & captured our interest before going in to the house. There was so much to see & read about, which was made easier by our guided talk. All in all a delightful experience, thank you!

We visited Sudeley using our Historic Houses membership and had a fabulously entertaining tour and a ride through the history of the building and all the historical characters who have lived or stayed here. The staff are very informative and knowledgeable. The grounds are very well kept and we were impressed with the amount of conservation work with wildlife trusts and the co existence programme. We had lunch in the Coach House and were warmly greeted by 2 lovely ladies who ran through the choice of foods on offer. We were completely sold on the locally made sausage rolls which were served warm and the homemade soup which was utterly gorgeous. The scones are also a must and are made by one of the ladies. All in all, a very worthwhile and informative visit and well worth a stop off if you are visiting this area.

We visited the Castle and grounds today and had the most wonder Day .
After touring around the house which had guides giving us information and answering any questions we had we went to St Mary’s Chapel , what a complete delight.
Before walking the gardens we stopped off for something to drink and eat in the Coach house . We were greeted with a lovely lady who really couldn’t do enough for us, we had soup , ( which was absolutely amazing ) Rolls and Homemade Scones ..
what an absolute treat . Customer service was amazing good value for money and so friendly. Will definitely be back very soon .
Highly recommended.

This was a return visit since 2006 with the Gardeners World 2 for 1 offer. Thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon but was saddened to see horrible artificial roses and plastic stems in the Banqueting Hall ruins. The exhibition in the house was extremely interesting and the romantic ruins beautiful. We found the animal statues very clever albeit a little worn and so much better than the live animals we saw on our previous visit.

Thank you for visiting Sudeley Castle and Gardens and for taking the time to feedback. Our animals are off to the repair shop when we close in November and will be looking much more robust when we open again in March. The fake flowers have been left over from an event and are being removed. Thank you for your comments.

Imagine the planning strategy meeting where it was decided that, in the grounds of one of the historic houses in England, it would be a good idea to assemble a dodgy collection of mouldy animals and a faux native village. I shudder to think what other desperate schemes were rejected.

Places like this speak for themselves and need careful curating to enhance the experience. And what about all of those annoying signs with qua codes urging people to dig out their phones to find out about prehistoric animals. What's that all about?

The gardens around the evocative ruins were really very nice ,although in September the rose garden was a bit bleak. The knot garden was excellent. Did I mention the plastic flowers hanging down one of the walls outside? Whose bright idea was that? I wonder.

One gets to see very few rooms in the castle itself: two up and two down; you have to pay extra to get a guided tour to see any more which is a bit mean considering it's nearly £20.00 to get in. The museum, however, is well presented with lots of interesting items.

We loved the surroundings, very little changed since Tudor times and the walk to Winchcombe was a delight.

Enjoyed a fantastic and full day at Sudeley Castle. So much more to see than expected. There are extensive displays in the castle explaining the history with artifacts from all through the ages. All very interesting but lots to take in! The gardens are lovely, especially the Tudor-style Knot Garden. Don't miss going into the church to see the tomb of Katherine Parr. Amazing to see it right up close. Entry to both the castle and gardens is included in the Gardener's World 2 for 1 offer which makes it even better.

A truly beautiful place with a rich history. The ruins give it a wonderfully romantic feel. The only thing that spoiled the otherwise delight visit was when I spotted fake flowers attached to the wall of the ruined banqueting room…who would do such a thing? Very bad taste!
