About
The D-Day Story tells of the people behind the events of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. It holds over 10,000 items – preserving, researching and acquiring objects to share with the public through exhibitions, workshops and other activities. The museum is fully accredited, meeting nationally agreed standards for UK museums. Following a £5 million transformation project, it has moved from being an military-focused museum to one that tells the personal stories behind the epic day. The museum is also home to the Overlord Embroidery, which tells the story of the operation across 34 hand-stitched panels stretching for a total of 83 metres. The D-Day Story is one of six museums run by Portsmouth Museums, part of Portsmouth City Council. Responsibility for the museums service falls under the remit of the council’s cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Sport.

Anything that can reduce a grown man to tears five times has to be worth a visit. Very informative lots to see and experience. Great gardens and sculptures outside too.

Excellent Display of the D-Day Landing
Oct 2021
This is a well structured museum with great displays and explanations relating to the British and Allied invasion of France - the D-Day invasion. There are a few COVID-19 restrictions but nothing to detract from the story and the experience for the visitors.
Attached to the Museum is a room with the incredible "Overlord Embroidery" a tapestry of stiched storytelling taking us from the start of the World War 2 through to the end of the Battle of Normandy. It is 83 metres long and took six years to complete. Attached to the museum is also a war-time Landing Craft for tanks, used during D-Day.

Seeing the landing craft how big it was. Reading about the mini subs on D-day, and other things I haven't heard about .

Great place for the family to visit
Sep 2021
A must for anyone with an interest in "recent" history. The area is surrounded with maritime history from the 13thC to the 19thC. The Overlord Tapestry is a superb piece of work.

Visit to the D Day Story

The content I could see was very good, but due to very bad lighting I was unable to read many of the descriptions etc. I’m sorry this affected the score, or I would of given this 5/5

Excellent attraction worth the money
Sep 2021
This is a very intense attraction, with lots to see & read. Some very fun interactive quizes & stratagy puzzles. You are recommended to visit the landing craft before going into the main displays. It really helped with the spacial logistics of getting 10 tanks & men into such a small space! Some of the videos are very moving & thought provoking. We arrived at about noon & came out approx 4pm. There is a small cafe so you can have a break from standing & walking & reading. I think it would be nicer if it was more in keeping with the era perhaps a 40s theme? There is a very impressive tapestry sewn by the Royal School of needlework, depicting various well known photos. The tapestry is about 83 meters long. This is a very worth seeing museum.

Well worth a visit.
Sep 2021
Fantastic museum with wonderfully curated exhibits. The museum offers a great overview of WWII and has a really good balance of hands on, interactive and static exhibits to engage a diverse age range of audiences. It was well presented throughout with clear labelling and great interpretation panels. I was really very impressed by this museum. Was a little museum weary after having visited seven museums over the previous four days - so was delighted when this provided such a rich selection of exhibits and told the story of DDay so outstandingly. The curation team should really be congratulated on providing such an interesting and diverse selection of artefacts, to document the actions on DDay. My only minor criticism would be (and apologies if I missed this…) the seeming omission of Operation Fortitude and Operation Bodyguard - the faux information that Britain coordinated and fed to Germany in an attempt to mislead them and draw troops away from Normandy - I think the inclusion of these would have been a rich addition to the exhibition.
Overall, a great museum, with helpful and friendly staff and the tapestry was an absolute delight to learn of - I was not aware of its existence previously.
The opportunity to board the landing craft is a nice addition, as is the real life video and audio testimonials of servicemen throughout, offering real life insights.
Highly recommend a visit.

Really interesting museum and well worth a visit
Aug 2021
This museum opened in August 2020 and has the last surviving land cruiser used in the D-day landings. We found the museum very interesting and there was plenty to see and do. I recommend this museum to all who have an interest in the history of conflict and World War Two.
