About
As you arrive at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the stunning sleek, black lines of Britain's first iron-hulled, armoured warship, take your breath away. Warrior, launched in 1860, was the pride of Queen Victoria's fleet. Powered by steam and sail, she was the largest, fastest and most powerful ship of her day and had a profound effect on naval architecture. Warrior was, in her time, the ultimate deterrent. Yet within a few years she was obsolete. Restored and back at home in Portsmouth, Warrior now serves as a ship museum, monument, visitor attraction, private venue and more.

- DemothesisPortsmouth, United Kingdom296 contributionsExcellent tourViewed the Warrior as part of the Ultimate Shipyard Ticket. Really fabulous ship, but what made it for us was the actors on board sharing their ‘on ship’ experiences. Really good fun and a great visit.Demothesis, thanks for your praise and kind comments about our team. Thank you for letting our team know how we did! We look forward to welcoming you again in the future. - EJ199016717 contributionsInformative and entertaining visit - great crew and staffIt's been a dream of mine to visit the ship and it certainly didn't disappoint. Imposing and impressive from the outside, it was fascinating inside and every single member of the crew or staff were helpful and knowlegable. Despite having read about this ship I learned so much while there. Standout hit was the in-character crew, we ended up having a long and detailed conversation with one of the gun crew which was thoroughly enlightening.Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review, and thank you for your kind comments about our team. We will ensure your feedback is shared with our operations team. - Lisa T3 contributionsHMS WarriorI was reluctant to go at first as I wanted to go on HMS Victory (we only had time for one more!) but I am so glad we did. You could wander around freely and enjoy every aspect of the ship. The best bit though, that made this such a great experience, were the character crew. They were enthusiastic, knowledgeable and completely in character. They knew the 'big' stuff but also had so many anecdotes that were funny, interesting and informative. We spoke to the lieutenant for ages and he was amazing, I could have listened to him all day! Excellent attraction!Hey there, Thank you for your kind review; we are happy to pass along your comments to the team! Our team strives to deliver an excellent experience, and are glad you found this to be the case during your visit. - Frances B19 contributionsFantasticAbsolutely fantastic!! We met with station 27 leader Mr knight. His knowledge was phenominal regarding the ship and the day to day life aboard. When you are in the company of someone who not only knows thier subject but is so enthusiastic, it is catching. We learned so much. I recommend this trip to all who venture to the Historic DockyardHello there! Thank you for your kind review; we are happy to pass along your comments to the team! - John H38 contributionsThe One to SeeOf all the places you can visit at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard HMS Warrior was our favourite. I thought Victory would have been a close contender, but there was a couple things that put me off Victory. HMS Warrior is huge and you can visit every deck; The upper deck, main deck, lower deck, and the hold. Obviously there are a lot of steep stairs to get up and down the decks. I loved that there wasn’t an audio guide (like Victory) but I wish there had been a few information boards in certain areas to give a bit more insight and information about what part of the ship you were in and what it was used for. Having said that I did find a kind of leaflet thing, made to look like a newspaper which I wish I’d found earlier as it was a good guide. Personally speaking I’d have left these leaflets right at the top of the ramp you have to ascend to get on the ship, that way you have it right at the start of your exploration. All in all I would say this is the one you MUST visit. Thanks for taking the time to leave a review; we really appreciate your high star rating! HMS Warrior has been reimagined exactly as she was in 1863. You can step onboard and meet our ‘Dockyard Alive’ team, who bring her story to life by wandering the decks and mingling with visitors to share their stories of life onboard in 1863. They are always happy to help and answer any questions you may have about the ship. We appreciate all visitor feedback as it gives us an opportunity to review and improve our offer, and we will be sure to pass on your comments to our Operations team for internal review. We do hope you can come back and see us again in the future. ^SFWritten 15 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 July 2024
- Anne C114 contributionsA bearilliant day outIt’s Eddie the bear here leaving my review. Today the sun was shining and I returned back to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to visit HMS Warrior. What a majestic ship this is - they had historic people on board telling us about what life would have been like on the ship. One of the volunteers suggested I try a hammock out for size. I was a little naughty bear as I attempted to climb a ladder - I would not recommend this as I soon realised I had got stuck! Everyone was very friendly too - if you get the chance then definitely pay them a visit. 5*Hi Eddie! Thank you so much for your review, and we're happy to hear you enjoyed meeting our crew! We loved seeing photos of your visit too, if you would be happy for us to use these on our social channels, please email our team on ContentandComms@NMRN.org.uk and a member of the team will be in touch. - Pamela C2 contributionsHMS Warrior crew - great visitOur visit to HMS warrior was so interesting. |There was so much to see and all aspects of life on deck, the workings of the boat, the historical context were all brought to life so well by actors in character with different jobs on the ship. They were brilliant at talking about their life on board and giving stories about their jobs as well as demonstrations. They were the real highlight and you could've asked them anything and they'd have been able to tell you - they know so much and tell their stories so well. Thank you for making it such a fun dayReviews like this give us motivation and help us ensure we continue to provide high-quality care. Your recommendation means so much to us and we're so happy to have earned it. Thank you again for taking the time to let the world know about your positive experience. - Paul RWellingborough, United Kingdom804 contributionsAn Impressive and Beautiful VesselThe stunning HMS Warrior forms part of the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard - a home it shares with a number of other historic vessels, museums and attractions. As part of my visit I also saw the thrilling HMS Victory but, to my mind - and this might almost be blasphemous to say - on a purely aesthetic basis, Warrior is the more impressive and beautiful of the two. And, whilst Victory clearly trumps Warrior in the history stakes, Warrior still has a very interesting career behind her as a formidable Victorian warship and an exploration of her several accessible decks evokes that past vividly. Contrasting her with Victory is interesting in itself and I strongly recommend anyone visiting the dock to make sure they see both.Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We were stunned by the people who were explaing life in different sections of the ship. Each of them were true to the roles they played out. Using the term I and we to explain how they used items and their daily routine. There was lady dress in the clothes of the era who at first I assumed to be a model and was taken aback when she came to life and told my partner he was rude in the way he addressed her, she was overcome with shock that he did not actually introduce himself !!! great visit worth every penny suitable for all ages lots of stairs to go between the decks so could be difficult for some people. takes a good hour to tour the ship longer if you spend time talking to the crew

Not my first visit to the Warrior as have been on board a number of times. But it’s a fascinating ship and it’s always great to visit and learn something new. The crew play their roles as if we were in 1860 which really brings the ship to life. Ask them a question and you get a real answer as if the ship was about to sail or be attacked.
The ship itself is immaculate. Perfectly maintained and an imposing sight as you walk towards the dockyard. Below deck the engine room is an impressive piece of engineering which gave the ship its speed and the guns on the decks its awesome firepower. Be sure to visit.

This is my favourite of all the things to see at the Maritime Museum. This is a very, very large ship with a rich and intriguing history. The volunteers/staff make this the best exhibit. They dress in period costume and assume the characters, speech and personalities of the ship crew of the time. Their stories of everyday life on the ship are delivered in the first person as if you are actually speaking to the stoker or an officer of the day and its hard to pull yourself back to the present day when their descriptions are so utterly vivid and enlightening, and in some cases very amusing. Their tales transport you back in time.
This ship and its history are a vital source of information for future generations.
*A huge thumbs-up to the Maritime Museum for extending our season tickets for an extra 6 months due to Covid. In one fell swoop they secured my loyalty. Take note, other attractions like National Trust! Learn something from this organisation. The Maritime Museum puts their customer first.

My first visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard with my family. HMS Warrior looked very impressive as we approached. Onboard we met Paul, an experienced guide, who enthusiastically answered our questions. He explained about the different types of cannons, the engines, furnaces etc and what life onboard would have been like for the men. He was happy to guide our small party around the main parts of the ship giving us facts and figures and stories of people who had lived and worked onboard. We got so much more out of the visit than walking round ourselves or using a guide book. Paul was so knowledgeable and made the experience the absolute best.

No electronic guide but "living" ships characters portrayed by some very knowledgeable actors. A fascinating relic of a bygone age when Britannia really did rule the waves. Another must see in the Dockyard

Certainly worth seeing. Went round the Warrior as part of our Portsmouth Dockyard visit. Spent at least a couple of hours, staff are all in authentic garb and keep in their character whilst telling you about the ship and their role. All are really knowledgeable and this is a great way to learn about the ship and the time period it sailed in. Really worth the cost, very interesting visit.

Our first port of call was on board warrior. We couldn't get over the fact she was just 50 years older than victory but how far technology had come. The live actors in costume really have an immersive experience and their font of knowledge was staggering. Amazing ship and fantastic history lesson. Allow 1.5-2hours

This was an unexpected pleasure. It has been set up well to cope with covid limitations. It is a big ship and worth the time taken to explore it thoroughly. You learn a lot in the process. The attendants on duty to act their parts in its story were great to talk to

Beautiful Royal Navy ship - a fantastic representation of Industrial Britain and Naval advancement.
It is fascinating to see how quickly naval technology progressed in the 19th century, from Victory to Warrior, the difference in 55 years is huge and represents industrial advancement in an extremely visceral way. What makes this even more amazing is that Warrior herself was rendered obsolete around 15 years after she was built.
The ship itself is in superb restored condition - from the gun deck to the engine rooms, it is truly remarkable. The guides in uniform and character aboard the ship were very knowledgeable and professional.

Hi Leslie b,
It does move slightly but you don't feel this when you're on board. Access to the ship is via a gangway so at high tide this is steeper than at low tide.
Best wishes,
Hannah

Coming on Gosport ferry. Is it possible to walk from the ferry pontoon landing to the historic dockyard?
Written 4 August 2018
Yes a very short walk from the ferry to the dockyard.
One point worth mentioning, the Mary Rose Experience is separate from the Dockyard so you will need to pay both.
