When travelling to and exploring Southampton on my own for the first time, this is probably one of the first and most interesting place I have even seen in this city. This is located just off the High Street close to the WestQuay Shopping Centre....More

If you are walking around the city centre you will eventually come across the remains of this very old gate.

I just visited the area and did not actually go to the top or within the Bargate. However, I was impressed with the structure on a whole and walked through it a couple of times on my travels. The architecture is excellent and there is...More

It's not like the biggest tourist attraction ever. It's nice to imagine how long it is but I would not recommend going to Southampton specially for this. The buildings around the Bargate are all modern which makes it kinda weird!

A wonderful element of Southampton's history, linking the shopping area (appropriately named "Above Bar") to the road leading down to the docks which made Southampton's economy thrive. Situated close to bars restaurants and shopping malls, the surrounding area is only blighted by the abandoned "Bargate...More

If you are walking the walls you'll run into the bargate as you walk up High Street from the quay. Sadly it is totally commercialized with stores on either side. Hard to imagine what the old Town looked like. There is even a ferris wheel...More

The Bar Gate was one of the oldest gates into the city. It has interesting architecture and 2 sculpted lions that protect the entrance.

Thinking that Southampton has not much to offer, the Bargate is one of the main attractions that a tourist should visit. You can even get inside if you are lucky enough and find some open days.

This was the entrance to Southampton and in medieval times was surrounded by a moat. It was constructed by the Normans around 1180 and has been cleaned in recent years. It is a stunning piece of historical architecture as are the rest of the walls...More
