- Lin MHampshire, United Kingdom63 contributionsFabulous ShieldhallJust love trips on Shieldhall. Great boat, great staff, everything clean, safe and ship-shape. What a wonderful way to see the cruise ships, especially Queen Anne before her maiden voyage. Thanks, our volunteers thoroughly enjoyed welcoming guests on board our first sailings of the 2024 season, it is always a real highlight when new cruise ships grace Southampton, especially a new 'Queen.' Was great to get close to Queen Anne and to salute her with our steam whistle and siren!Written 12 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 May 2024
- Linsley MLondon, United Kingdom122 contributionsA bit of living history .....The opportunity to sail on a bit of living history is not to be missed. The Shieldhall is amazing - surpassed only by the volunteers who run the entire operation. The ship, unusually, runs an 'access all areas' policy allowing visitors to visit the bridge and engine room where the staff don't seem to mind working round the visitors. Admittedly the weather was a great help, and I'm not sure what it would be like going on a full cruise in wet weather. For the price forth afternoon was reasonable as well. If you have any interest in ships, steam. or the water then don't hesitate to go.Thanks Linsley. Hope we can welcome you on board again soon. Shieldhall has a covered awning deck; a saloon that seats 60 plus and lots of covered space on either side of the ship. Our current capacity is 200, so plenty of room to stay dry at all times!Written 12 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 7 May 2024
- George M1 contributionD-DAY Themed Cruise on the Solent June 8th 2024We were a group of 20 from the Royal Naval Association Portsea & Portsmouth branch and we chose the D-Day 80 themed cruise to take part in the commemorations weekend coinciding with Armed Forces Day in Southsea. All of our group had a fantastic day onboard the SS Shieldhall with lots of positive comments on the ship and her crew who were friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable in all areas. The service of commemoration on the main deck was well attended and we even met up with Shipmates from the Birmingham branch who were also onboard. The only downside were the long queues in the Bar/Saloon, perhaps a separate queue for food/tea/coffee and one for alcoholic drinks would resolve the matter. The staff though were great all day and the catering/galley team worked very hard. A great day out on the Solent and we even got to see the Red Arrows who were on display at Southsea! Highly recommended for all ages, especially if you are a steam enthusiast.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 10 June 2024
- Jacqui M12 contributionsPoor cateringDday80th Anniversary trip. Excellent Commentary throughout. However Catering was poor. Prices rather high, Lack of food choice, what they had ran out to quickly and queuing too long to put an order in. Lack of communication regards the delay of pilot, then we had finished our trip there was a delay before we were able to depart the ship but were not kept informed as to why.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 10 June 2024
- Itchie-Feet20 contributionsExperience history & support a fantastic charity! We booked a trip on Sheildhall to watch the Cowes yacht race as a celebration for two 80th birthdays & had a fantastic time! The team arranged some special celebratory treats, which was really appreciated. All the crew were really welcoming & keen to share their enthusiasm for this special ship - including patiently explaining how all the parts in the engine room work. Food & drinks on board were reasonable too - both in selection & price. Cannot recommend highly enough!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 June 2024
- MatchingnailvarnishSouthampton, United Kingdom247 contributionsLovely Day Out.Booked for my husbands 60th as he loves being out on the water. Such an excellent day. excellent email explaining the boarding details and parking. Parking was very well organised. All staff encountered were friendly. Plenty space to sit in various areas to get great views. Catering very good as such great choice. Perfectly informative commentary with lots of interesting facts. A very enjoyable day and the weather was perfect too !Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 July 2024

- Linda3 contributionsA fabulous afternoon on the water. We went on the trip to see the Solent Forts. The weather was good and the views of the forts were great. As always the volunteers and crew did a wonderful job, and a special mention must go to Judy who did the commentary, so much interesting information thoughout the trip. We also had a bonus of seeing 3 of the cruise liners sailing coming out past us. A lovely relaxing afternoon with some great sights.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 15 July 2024
- lionhart22Rotorua, New Zealand17 contributionsSolent Fort TripOur trip to the Solent Forts was blessed with good weather. Staff were generally helpful, ship interesting to explore. Only problem experienced was with the food. Enquired about ordering a jacket potato only to be told it was too early. On returning a while later to order were told they were all gone. No announcement had been made to indicate when to order. Bacon bap requested as a replacement, but this was almost inedible as the bacon was seriously overdone and too hard to eat. It was also very greasy. Did not enjoy !Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 July 2024
- Gary W1 contributionGreat unique experience. The cruise was really interesting with commentary at various points of interest. The historic Shieldhall was fascinating with virtually all areas accessible to view including engine room and bridge. All of the crew were so friendly and helpful and made you feel really welcome. I would thoroughly recommend it.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 July 2024

Loved our family visit there. Would definitely recommend it, especially to people interested/fascinated by shipping (you get to see massive cruise and cargo ships pass, some loud ship to ship communication as well), history (it's basically an interactive museum and boat tour), engineering (the engine room is an amazing visit, it's a working steam engine!). The staff/volunteers are nice and friendly, they're also happy to explain or give more details about parts of ship from the engineers in the engine room to the officers on the bridge. We also had 30s-50s singing on our trip with the Aphrodite singers, which made it a nice time-capsule.

Joined Steamship Shieldhall on her ‘American independence Day’ Cruise around the docks last weekend. I’ve been going on Shieldhall for 15 years now , each trip I always feel like an excited child on a school trip. The crew were as always extremely happy, cheerful, polite and very friendly, very helpful with solving a problem with transport I encountered.
The onboard band ‘The Stompers’ were absolutely a delight, great to see visitors having fun and dancing away to the tunes on deck, a happy party atmosphere on board. The ship looked pristine clean throughout after her recent refit at Falmouth.
Thank you once again to all the hard working crew and the ‘Stompers’, you made my day. A very happy one. Can’t wait to join you in August on the ‘Titanic themed Cruise’. You never let us down, we’ll done all 🙂🙂

Really enjoyed this, our 2nd trip, on the SS Shieldhall Steam Ship. Loads of interesting history attached to this ship. The Selsey Shantymen (9 of them) entertained us with singalong sea shanties throughout the 3.5 hour trip. A feeling of excitement and awe at the sight of the big cruise ships around us .. much hooting and waving was enjoyed. The refreshments were first class and the service extremely efficient from the bar to the kitchen to the table! An amazing CREW looked after us from the moment we boarded to the moment we disembarked. Thank you all.

A fantastic day out on a working steam ship. Crew all great and ready to answer all your questions. Great viewing point for Fasnet race. Onboard commentary superb, really informative about The Fasnet race, the boats we were seeing and on the way to the race, and on the way back lots of really good information about what you were seeing. To see the engine room and talk to the engineers was really good in particular for my grandson who wants to be an engineer.

An absolutely wonderful afternoon on the Steamship Shieldhall today. It was her first sailing, since the dreaded Covid Pandemic hit the world and it was delightful. The Captain, Crew and Pursers were all very friendly and helpful and happy to explain anything about the vessel and its past history.
I would urge anyone to take a trip on the SS Shieldhall and visit all areas, such as the Bridge and Engine Room.
An added bonus was Nigel's commentary, which was both witty and informative. Also, seeing the cruise ships leaving Southampton and the sounding of horns to acknowledge each other.
We enjoyed it so much, we may well do it all again😎👍

Wonderful, relaxing 2 hour trip around Southampton Docks seeing the cruise liners that were in port. Knowledgeable and friendly staff throughout the boat.
I live locally but still enjoy getting my bearings from the water.
Not my first time onboard, took parents for their first visit and they loved it - telling anyone who will listen all about it!

Shieldhall is a very important part of nautical history, and a trip on her is a great way to ensure that she is kept afloat. The volunteer crew are all very friendly and very knowledgeable. The open bridge and engine/boiler rooms are well worth visiting. There is also a live commentary detailing sights being passed. The cafe is well priced - bacon rolls are recommended, and the ship even has Titanic beer available. Could not be faulted.

Bought a voucher as a Birthday present, that was good idea number 1. We then chose to go out on the Shieldhall to see the Bournemouth Air show, that was good idea number 2. Great way to see the show, anchored in the perfect place. With the “typhoon” in particular it felt like we were having our own personal show as it flew over and around us, never to be forgotten. The steamship trip itself is well worth doing, we will book again. Such a friendly crew, it is worth remembering they are all volunteers. Good range of refreshments, reasonably priced and served with a smile. Enjoyed looking round too, relaxed but felt safe, not crowded.
Well done to the Shieldhall team, we had a super, fun, memorable day out 😊

Excellent music cruise with RU40 band on board. The ship is excellent with lovely friendly volunteer crew. The food in the cafe is great value - we love the bacon butties and also the quiche and salad. Very smooth sailing past several cruise ships which were in port. A really enjoyable day out!

We were aboard the Shieldhall for the 2022 Bournemouth Air Festival.
We were welcomed aboard an hour before sailing and found ourselves seats. There were plenty from which to chose. Nobody was left standing. The nice thing about them was that they were in blocks, so, you weren't squashed together.
We were treated to the tug towing us away from the berth and a "Horn Battle" when we passed the chain ferry!
We had brought a picnic but there was plenty of food and drink at a reasonable price on board.
We anchored off Bournemouth beach and had a far better view of the air show than the people on land. The Eurofighter Typhoon did a vertical climb right next to us. The noise was incredible!
The sun came out in the afternoon, so the the trip home was like a Mediterranean cruise!
It was a fabulous day out. It was the second time we had done it and we will certainly do it again.

What dates will she be sailing in September... October.... or November?
Where would she be going?
Written 13 August 2019
Have a look on the Shieldhall website, this is a seasonal service, but there are some trips in early September.
Written 14 August 2019
can you take your own picnic on board?
Written 7 August 2018
Yes I think so. There is a restaurant on board with some very reasonable prices. However you can also sit on deck with a picnic. Really chilled...

Thank you for your comments, volunteering is not constrained by distance. On the trip you were on, in the crew we had one volunteer from Skye, two from Durham and one from Morecombe and several from London / Nth of the M4. Our Chairman is from Devon and we have other volunteers from the South West too. If you're interested in volunteering, and we need all sort of skills to essentially run business, not just maritime or engineering skills there's lots of information and contact details on our website.
Glad you enjoyed your trip - so did we! Definitely the best place to watch the airshow.
Written 23 August 2016
oops - you couldn't see which trip you were on when responding, mea culpa, however the comments are all still valid.
Hope to see you at the airshow next year if not before!!!

Hello Nigel, there are a number of places where can stay which is near the ship. The nearest is the Holiday Inn which is about a 10 minute walk to the ship.
