- B D3 contributionsExpensive and basicThis is very expensive for what is actually here. This is for families with young children only. Under 10 I would say. Staff are friendly and cafe is clean and spacious. The interactive activities are basic and for young children who don't understand what is happening then they are just randomly pressing buttons etc which kept them busy for sometime but not long. Most buttons just switch lights on. Some make noise. We didn't use the soft play. There is a construction area with foam bricks and a crane. This is popular and you have to queue for your turn but some parents don't make their kids wait their turn and they push in. Also, coffee is in takeaway cups and I saw a few getting knocked over near the exhibits, requiring paper towels and mops. The best area was the sandpits and digging for rocks. With 2 kids under 4, we managed to stretch our visit to 1 hour 45, including a drink and snack stop. But for £30 for 1 adults ,1 child and an infant (free) it's quite a lot, plus drinks, and parking charge (although on this visit the machines were out of order). By 10.30 on a Sunday, the venue was already packed and very loud, noisy. Car park struggling to contain everyone, people circling for spaces. We didn't pay extra to go in the planetarium or other shows as the price would be getting a bit ridiculous at this point. We've been once, we won't need to go again.Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. While we hope that every visitor young and old will learn something new when they visit us, the Science Centre is most suited towards children aged 5-12 and their families. All of our exhibits have been designed to be simple to use for all ages and abilities. Younger children will begin to build their science enquiry skills while older children can learn more about the science behind what they are doing from our interpretation boards. We're pleased you enjoyed digging for space rocks over in our Earth:Lab area. The cost of general admission covers entry to our live science shows, the Science Live demo area, two floors of interactive exhibits and Bio:Space nature activity zone. As not all of our visitors wish to see a Planetarium show, tickets for these are an optional add-on. We hope you might reconsider and visit again in the future.Written 8 January 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 January 2023
- Isobel WReading, United Kingdom17 contributionsFun but expensiveFor a family of 4, tickets cost us £60. An additional £16 for the planetarium. Ellie did the talk in the planetarium and was fantastic explaining the constellations and planets. She'd done it in a clear way to get the younger kids excited. The science live shows throughout the day were good too. I liked that you can stand on the balcony and watch, unlike some places I've been where kids get pushed out the way by over enthusiastic parent. They were just the right length to capture little one's interest. My kids had fun learning through all the different exhibits, although my youngest didn't stick around to read the learning bit, he was more interested in pushing buttons. We were done in about 2 hours including the planetarium and lunch. At the end of the day both my children enjoyed their day out, it's a shame it's so expensive.Hi Isobel. Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your visit and it's lovely to hear your positive comments about our Inspirer Ellie. Our staff really do bring the science to life. When it comes to the cost of a visit to the Science Centre, we pride ourselves on offering a memorable experience for the whole family. Our Charity constantly evaluates our pricing to ensure it is fair and competitive. We have in fact found it to be cheaper than many other local attractions. We also include everything in our ticket price except for the Planetarium (which we have found not every visitor wants to experience). That's two floors of interactive exhibits, live science demos throughout the day in Science Live, a free live show in the Science Theatre and indoor / outdoor nature activities in Bio:Space. Plus, in the school holidays, we offer even more activities within this one ticket price. We hope that this explains our ticket price and we hope to see you again ion the future.Written 20 February 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 February 2023
- Rebecca L5 contributionsGreat for kids on a rainy dayGreat for kids interested in hands-on science. Lots to see and do. Kept our 8 year old occupied for a good couple of hours. Parking was reimbursed as the car park was full and we had to park at the nearby hotel and walk a few hundred metres up the road (alongside parked cars, no pavement, could be tricky with little ones). Lots of toilets, which were clean. The coffee at the cafe wasn't great, just from a self-service machine. It was scorching hot and tasted burnt. The hot chocolate was good and my son loved the chocolate muffin.Hi there, thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We appreciate the feedback you have given. We are glad you enjoyed your visit and I'll pass on the note about our coffee and the walk from the hotel parking to the relevant teams. The chocolate muffins are super yummy, I agree. - Pix4United Kingdom168 contributionsDay at the Science CentreI thought Charles in the planetarium was marvellous. We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. However, we had paid for parking, but the car park was full. We didn’t get our money back, we received a voucher. I have a health problem which makes any walking on a slope really difficult. So parking in the hotel car park wasn’t ideal. The centre was full. The soft play area was a nightmare. An accident waiting to happen as all the kids and very small kids going up the slide area all at once. Three older boys piled on top of my little granddaughter and luckily they got off of her quickly. I then saw one of the boys jump on top of her again. I ran in and told him to get off of her. I don’t think it would be a bad idea for the equipment be cleaned a few times a day with that many people coming through. All in all I think it was okay for the little ones, but it’s a shame there isn’t more for them to do. I thought there would be an eating area, but there was just a few bits for kids and mainly drinks. It could be so much more. I will say again that the planetarium was magic.Hi there, thank you for visiting Winchester Science Centre and for taking the time to leave us a review. We really appreciate your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the parking situation - if you need any assistance with accessibility to the Centre, do ask a member of our car parking staff who are present during the school holidays. We are so glad that you enjoyed the Planetarium show and I'll pass on the kind words to Charles. If you're looking for quieter times to visit I'd recommend booking the 2pm entry slot. Hopefully you will consider visiting the Science Centre again soon! - tsmithfBramdean, United Kingdom2 contributionsVery exspensive for not a lot....age limits should applyWay over priced for what it was, charging £15.00 per adult and the same for a child aged from 3-16!!! Plus you have to pay an extra £4 each for a short video in the plantirum. So for a family of 4 thats £80 plus £3 for parking. It was outdated on most of the interactions and is not suitsble for older children as you are bascially in a giant nursery and the so called science is very basic and for young children only. The downstairs giant play area is again non relevant to science and has young children running all over the place paying £15 to see that each for two 14 year olds and a 9 year old that was bored within 20 mins seems pretty execisive. I think charging a 3 to 16 year old £15 is actually a rip off and then charging more for an underwhelming plantirum short film with screaming babies mostly, is appaling. If they feel they have to charge that amount and havent really invested in better updated science information or activities to suit 'all' ages including older children they are not spending their profits wisely and they think its ok to over charge for something so basic. The science Museum in London would have been a whole better experience at a lot less cost. These days families are penny watching as it is and this to me feels like a rip off and not suitable for everyone.Hi there, thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the cost of visiting the Science Centre. The cost of general admission covers entry to our live science shows, the Science Live demo area, two floors of interactive exhibits and Bio:Space nature activity zone. The shows and activities change each school holiday. This means that most people tend to spend around half a day at the Centre, with some staying all day. While we hope that every visitor young and old will learn something new when they visit us, the Science Centre is most suited towards children aged 5-12 and their families. We do have some events which are more suited to older children and adults which can be found under the What's On section on our website. We hope you will consider visiting us for an evening event soon! - NHLHPortsmouth, United Kingdom36 contributionsDisappointingTend to agree with some of the other reviews in that it really does not represent good value for money and is geared very much to those with younger families. Our 8 year old Grandson said much the same, and that there was not as much to do as there was pre lock-down. The Planetarium is very informative, but be sure to pick the right show for the age of your children. We had a very loud, and disruptive family with young children in the rows behind us that seemed oblivious of the noise they were making, until another family pointed out to them that they could not hear the presenters narrative. We'd pretty much seen / done everything in a couple of hours, that a +£60 was pretty steep. Surely if you've paid entry than parking should be for free also.Hi there, thank you for visiting Winchester Science Centre and for taking the time to leave a review. We're sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your experience. The cost of general admission covers entry to our live science shows, the Science Live demo area, two floors of interactive exhibits and Bio:Space nature activity zone. Alongside this we also have our Fiesta theme running throughout summer so you can enjoy festival tents, mini stages and outdoor live science against the backdrop of the South Downs National Park. This means that most people tend to spend around half a day to a whole day at the Centre. The Planetarium is accessible so everyone can have a special experience. All our shows are 'chatterbox shows'. We don't mind if the audience wants to call out, ask questions or swap ideas about what they can see. Hopefully you will consider visiting us again in the future. - Sam KPortsmouth, United Kingdom112 contributionsGood visit, but felt let down!I visited with a very Autistic young man today. Our overall experience was very good. My charge needed a break from all the noise and was approached by two members of staff, letting me know there was a regulation room we could go to. This was great, and we were able to regulate our emotions. This small room is open to everyone, not just additional needs. Our experience overall was great. HOWEVER We booked for the planetarium and was greatly saddened by the ignorance of other people. My charge is very autistic, non verbal but will recite his favourite movies loudly and inaudible. This was met throughout the session with lots of shushes. Imagine how this made me feel! But I stayed to watch the show because my charge was really enjoying the experience. Someone else may have left! I do feel that some sort of reminder is needed to say that the Science Centre is an all-inclusive environment for all who visit. This may stop the horrible attitude of others in an already heightened day out when taking out a young person with additional needs.Hi there Sam, thank you for taking the time to leave a review - we appreciate the feedback. Firstly, we're happy to hear that you were pointed towards the Recombobulation room and that your overall experience was good. But, we are sorry about the experience you had in our Planetarium. Our Planetarium shows are usually relaxed environments where we encourage vocalisations and interactions. Following your visit, we have spoken with our team of presenters to understand how we can make our Planetarium shows as inclusive as possible. This includes adding additional reminders to other visitors that the Planetarium shows are 'Chatterbox shows' - this means audience members can talk, move around, go in and out and ask questions. We do hope that you will consider visiting us again in the future. - Neil TRustington, United Kingdom174 contributionsKids onlyIt's certainly not geared towards adults. It's child orientated and if your an adult thinking your going to be interested, you won't be. At the café, there is no signs anywhere about hot sandwiches being available after 11.30, but when we asked at 11.10 we were told we would have to wait. When I mentioned this to the member of staff, she was completely uninterested. Unless you have kids, avoid this place.Hi there, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. The Science Centre is perfect for children from 3 to 12 years old and their families. If you're looking for adult only events - we host Science Lates. This is when we open only to ages 18+ and the activities, experiments and Planetarium experience are all geared towards adults. Our next Science Lates is Christmas Cracker on 8th December. Alternatively, we also host Night Sky Live which is centred towards all ages. An expert stargazing host teaches the audience about the stars in the Planetarium and then you head outside to see the real stars of the South Downs National Park. This is open to families and adults as the host can provide beginner to advance astronomy knowledge. The next Night Sky Live event is 10th November. Don't get the negative reviews, this place is great and the staff all make an amazing effort for a fun day out!
There's lots going on, it's really interactive with fun live science displays. It is geared towards kids but us adults also found it fun and interesting.
There's a good cafe with lovely food and a soft play area.
We stayed for 4 hours and could have stayed longer but we needed to head off.
Great family day out, good value and fun, our kids didn't want to leave..we'll be back!! 😁

Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear that the changes we have made to the Science Centre weren't to your liking. We work with a lot of advisory panels, including our very own youth board of 20 young children, to make sure there is something for everyone. As a result we have added a number of different things over the past three years including a nature focused indoor / outdoor area, a complete top floor exhibit transformation, a live demo area in the centre of the venue, free activities for families to get involved with during school holidays and evening events for families and adults only. However, we appreciate these changes aren't for everyone so thank you for your feedback.

We visited with our three children, including our 10 Yr old autistic child. When we arrived we realised that we did not have her ear defenders, which usually really help her in public environments. On the odd chance they might have some for sale, we asked staff who presented us with a backpack full of support for neurodiverse visitors that we could borrow during our visit. This included ear defenders, a folder with social stories
about the museum and some fiddle toys. The social stories were really helpful, and insightful and a great surprise. There was also a recombobluation room for those who need it and staff were very forthcoming with the content of shows to help decide if my daughter would cope.
Hugely impressed Winchester Science Centre with your inclusiveness and your
neurodiversity literacy. It was a game changer for our family and a way to blaze the trail for other organisations. Well done.

We had a wonderful time at the science centre with four children aged 1-7. We were there over 4 hours and still didn’t manage to see everything, the kids especially loved the building site and creating the Lego towers to test against the earthquake. We live locally and my only complaint is that I wish they were open during the week, I would definitely invest in annual passes if that was the case as it would be great to pop for an hour or so in the week to be able to spend time looking at specific topics without stressing about getting round everything.
It is expensive for a large family and so I think it’ll be a while before we can go again but we have lots of wonderful memories from our trip this week

Hi there, thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review! It's great to hear you enjoyed your visit to the Science Centre and that you made wonderful memories with us.
We are only open during the week for school groups but we are open to the public during school holidays and weekends. If you're looking for quieter times to explore the centre and focus on spending time looking at specific topics, we recommend visiting around 2pm. Additionally, we do have evening events which happen during the weekdays. Also, booking in advance can save you money - if you book 7 or more days in advance you can save yourself 25%! We really hope you're able to visit us again, especially as you live locally, so we hope these hints and tips will help you arrange another visit to the Science Centre soon. Many thanks, Rosie.

A fantastic day out with the children who could get very hands on with all the fun exciting and educational exhibit pieces. They were so taken in by everything they didn't want to leave. For children with relatively poor attention spans this was so refreshing. Also being able to relax as they could freely touch and feel all the items and play as children should was amazing.
The staff too were equally incredible, all so knowledgeable and able to draw the curiosity out of my children. My shy toddler was asked if he wanted to see the items in the 'curiosity cupboard' I've never seen him so attentive and engaging and hands on. I think they left inspired by the day and as mentioned enjoyed their time way more than they expected.

Great experience for our 7 and 5 y.o granddaughters who were into everything - all hands on. What makes fireworks work and the sky at night planetarium presentations, each about 30 minutes - good café - special mention for Michael on the till, super polite and helpful - lots of staff busy around the place keeping things running smoothly and cleanly - inspiring ambience - a jolly good day out - you can bring your own picnic too. Easy to use online advance booking and payment.

How long do people spend here on average? We're thinking of taking our 2 and 5 year olds for the day

if they are really interested in science most of the day, but when I went it was looking tired and many of the exhibits were broken or not working properly. so maybe half a day
Can I just confirm that children and adults are the same price? It feels a bit steep for a 3 year old!

If you purchase your ticket more than 3 days before you are due to visit the tickets are £9 excluding gift aid. Unfortunately only 0-2 fit into the other price bracket.

We’re going to book general admission tickets in advance online. Can we purchase tickets for the planetarium on the day (subject to availability) if we decide we’d like to see a show?

If I book the Saturday Night Tickets will we also have access to the Exhibits? I'm finding the website ticket information to be extremely confusing.

Not sure about Saturday as I haven't been on a Saturday. The last time I went I didn't have access but they sell lots of different types of tickets and events so maybe best to ring them?

There is a very clear theme to the responses given by staff to either the poor or terrible reviews. The majority of responses at best ignore the complaints and are simply used as a way of the centre batting off critism or at worst the replies are simply rude and unprofessional, often from persons in a position which simply requires understanding and diplomacy. I don't know how much credit and or time you give or put into Trip Advisor reviews, but considering you have signs asking customers to specifically take the time to do it the very least you could do is give them due credit and consideration and never resort to inapropriate/ rude and or dismissive replies or responses. If you do not know what I mean then I suggest you review your own responses to reviews!
Here is my question to you, considering just how many of your reviews are negative, approx' 1/3 and that the majority of those centre around exhibits being broken, not doing what they are meant to, refuting your estimate of just how many exhibits are working, the whole centre looking and feeling run down now and tatty. Etc etc.......when are you going to stop the pointless generic replied and actually realise that action is required and to act accordingly? It does show a certain amount of deniel of the facts and refusal to deal, why?

Thanks Peter, you'll see from the date, this question/ feedback from me is now almost 18 months old, so long infact, I had completely forgotten about it and the Centre. It was raised to highlight the poor/ unprofessional responses that were being given to customer complaints/ negative reviews, both historically, and at the time. The fact that you have just picked up on it now, suggests that there isn't much interest or credit given to Trip Adviser by the Centre Management/ Staff, which again begs the question, why is there a sign asking people to review/ feedback on the site. I should imagine you have picked up on my question by chance, because you are a new employee to the Centre, and you are just curious to see what people are saying. Ideally it should be regularly reviewed by Staff, with appropriate responses attached, but most importantly, that it is recognised as a valuable source of customer feedback, and in particular a way of constantly improving the service that is delivered. I am pleased to read your positivity about working there, and I very much hope that it has improved/ updated, and is now back to how good it used to be. All the best
