One of Winchester's five superb Military Museums telling the story of 250...

One of Winchester's five superb Military Museums telling the story of 250 years of campaigning for peace by The Royal Green Jackets and their former regiments, the 43rd and 52nd (The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry), the 60th (The King's Royal Rifle Corps) and the 95th Rifles (The Rifle Brigade). An outstanding collection of uniforms, weapons, silver, paintings and medals set over two floors. The exhibition on the first floor, entitled 'With the Rifles to Waterloo', opened in 2015 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the 25 square metre model of the battle with light and sound commentary. The museum is situated in Peninsula Square, formerly the barracks and the home of the Rifle Depot.

We had some time on ours hands and decided to take in one of the military museums in Winchester, this happened to be the first that we got to. Initial impression was very good, bright and well displayed artefacts. The star attraction is the Waterloo diorama, which guides you through the main events of the battle in about 10 minutes... An excellent quality museum. Loads for the kids. ( had to drag them away from dressing up areas!) And a quiz for them for the way round. The battle of Waterloo model was very clever. Worth watching the interactive bit for this which the kids loved. Guns they can pick up and play with too!

I have visited this museum many times and it just keeps getting better. If you like military museums and this sort of things it a must visit. Over 2 floors of history of the Royal Green Jackets / The Rifles right up to today's action. The model of the Battle of Waterloo is on of the best models I've ever... More

Excellent museum, plenty of easy to read displays, the Waterloo diorama is amazing! Stuff for kids to do as well. The visit was a little rushed due to it being in my lunch hour, but would go back and pop round the corner to the Ghurka Museum too.

Before leaving the town we visited the Peninsular Barracks and spent a few hours visiting the various museums there. Memorable is the active Waterloo battle with its hundreds of figures. There is so much to absorb so gift aid your entrance fee, retain your ticket and return for free for a 2 nd visit. Use the cafe by the entrance... More

We spent at least a couple of hours engrossed in the displays and were really impressed by the battle of Waterloo exhibit which kept us interested and talking for 30 minutes or more. The staff were both friendly and informative and there is so much material we will have to visit again to take in the rest.. Highly recommended for... More

This museum is a place for all;especially if you have an interest in army history;it goes right back to when the Royal Green Jackets started and then goes all the way through the parts they played in all wars...best to take your time to let it all sink in...

There is so much to learn about here, it is different to the usual saxon, norman history etc. It encompasses detalls about the Napalese, the area as well as the Gurkha history.
